  • Existing non-manifold data structures which use the ordered topological representation method, are designed based on a "Model" which is the highest topological entity. Their non-manifold information is always included in edges and vertices even if they are in the manifold situation. Thus they require large storage spaces than manifold data structures. The proposed data structure reduces its storage space by removing unnecessary information stored in edges and vertices. Topological information is classified into manifold and non-manifold information. The main non-manifold information is radial cycles and disk cycles. The proposed data structure always stores manifold information. For the non-manifold situation, the edge stores radial cycles, and the vertex stores disk cycles. The storage space can be reduced in the later stage of CAD design when the ratio of non-manifold to manifold entities is small.

  • Filament winding process is a comparatively simple operation in which continuous reinforcements in the form of roving are wound over a rotating mandrel. And now it is well established as a versatile method for storage tanks and pipe for the chemical and other industries. In this study, tensile strength of a filament wound ring specimens were evaluated by split disk test fixture and dress disk test fixture. The results obtained from experiments were compared with the theoretical values obtained by the rule of mixture. And the purpose of this paper is to suggest an appropriate test method for the evaluation of tensile properties of filament wound structures. The tensile strength of a ring specimens tested by the dress disk test showed better agreement with the theoretical values than of a ring specimen tested by the split disk test because the stress concentration in edges of s split disk test fixture is more severe than the that of dress disk test fixture. The results showed that the tensile strength of a ring specimen was influenced by the geometry of test fixture, the continuity of fibers, fiber-tension, fiber-end and stress concentration in specimen.

  • As the disk rotation speed increases in information storage devices, aerodynamically excited disk vibration is induced by airflow around the disk. This paper investigates theoretical and experimental studies on the disk flutter instability in CD-ROM drives. The effect of airflow on the disk vibration is modeled as the distributed damping and lift forces. By analyzing the eigenvalue problem of the aero-elastic coupling model, we introduces a novel technique to predict the flutter speed by comparing experimental natural frequencies with analytical ones of a disk rotating in vacuum. The new method predicts that the vibration mode with two nodal diameters in a CD disk experiences the first flutter instability at 12,000 rpm.

  • With rapid growth in the amount of data transferred on the Internet, traditional storage systems have reached the limits of their capacity and performance. SAN (Storage Area Network), which connects hosts to disk with the Fibre Channel switches, provides one of the powerful solutions to scale the data storage and servers. In this environment, the maintenance of data consistency among hosts is an important issue because multiple hosts share the files on disks attached to the SAN. To preserve data consistency, each host can execute the disk I/O whenever disk read and write operations are requested. However, frequent disk I/O requests cause the deterioration of the overall performance of a SAN cluster. In this paper, we introduce a SANtopia global buffer manager to improve the performance of a SAN cluster reducing the number of disk I/Os. We describe the design and algorithms of the SANtopia global buffer manager, which provides a buffer cache sharing mechanism among the hosts in the SAN cluster. Micro-benchmark results to measure the performance of block I/O operations show that the global buffer manager achieves speed-up by the factor of 1.8-12.8 compared with the existing method using disk I/O operations. Also, File system micro-benchmark results show that SANtopia file system with the global buffer manager improves performance by the factor of 1.06 in case of directories and 1.14 in case of files compared with the file system without a global buffer manager.

  • The head to disk spacing must be decreased to increase recording densities in hard disk drives. Recently, to decrease the head to disk spacing, smooth disk having no bumps onto the lading zone has used. In this research, we compared the number of particles generated in HDD with smooth and textured disks. We used a sampling method using a particle sampler and a CPC (condensation particle counter) to detect particles in HDD. First, we sampled and counted panicles generated with disk rotational speed and various rest times when the smooth disk and textured disks were used, then analyzed the sampled particles by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and AES (auger electron spectroscopy). In results of measuring particles, more particles in case of LZT disk drive generated than that of the smooth disk drive in all test modes. The number of particles generated in the smooth disk was very low. The particle generation increased as the rest time increased (smooth/LZT disks) and more particles in case of LZT disk drive generated than that of the smooth disk drive. In results of analyzing particle components, Al, Ti, Si components were detected and we could not found differences between components in case of smooth/LZT disk drive.

  • The load/unload behavior of the hard disk drive slider is studied in terms of the air bearing static characteristics. The numerical continuation methods are applied to calculate suspension force - equilibrium position curve. The critical preloads of the femto size slider are analyzed. The hi-stability conditions are depicted on the skew angle - preload diagram. The perturbation method is used to check the stability of the solution branches.

  • Rotating annular disks are widely used in data storage devices such as CDs, DVDs(digital versatile disks), and HDs(hard disks). Higher data transfer rate in data storage disks could not be achieved by polycarbonate disks in the present market. The problem can be solved by applying the fiber-reinforce composite materials to the disks. In this paper, an application of composite materials to rotating disks is proposed to increase the critical speed. Dynamic equation is formulated in order to calculate the natural frequency and critical speed for rotating composite by the Galerkin method. The results show that the radially reinforced disk is more effective in increasing critical speed than the circumferentially reinforced disk.
