APPLICATION OF HP-DISCONTINUOUS GALERKIN FINITE ELEMENT METHODS TO THE ROTATING DISK ELECTRODE PROBLEMS IN ELECTROCHEMISTRY

  • This paper presents the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods (DGFEM) for solving the rotating disk electrode problems in electrochemistry. We present results for the simple E reaction mechanism (convection-diffusion equations), the EC' reaction mechanism (reaction-convection-diffusion equation) and the ECE and $EC_2E$ reaction mechanisms (linear and nonlinear systems of reaction-convection-diffusion equations, respectively). All problems will be in one dimension.

  • Previous numerical simulations on planet-disk interactions revealed a lot of interesting phenomena including the planetary migration and the formation of many sub-structures inside the disks. However, these simulations were limited to an isothermal or adiabatic equation of state which does not account for various heating and cooling processes in the disks. Recent studies showed that the behavior of the planet-disk interaction can be significantly influenced by the disk thermodynamics. We develop a radiative diffusion module based on the two-temperature flux-limited diffusion approximation accounting for viscous heating and the accretion feedback. In this presentation, we describe our radiative diffusion solver, present some test results, and discuss potential applications of the module to planet-disk interactions,

  • 점성과 충돌이 있는 강착원반의 확산 과정을 생각한다. 이때 확산계수는 단순하게 1/${\sqrt{r}}$로 비례한다. 강착원반의 난류에 의해서 각운동량은 외부로 수송된다. 파동도 또한 내부에서 외부로 전달되므로 강착원반은 불안정한 방향으로 진행된다.

THE INSTABILITIES OF ACCRETION DISKS WITH RADIAL ADVECTION

  • The local instabilities of accretion disks were extensively studied, with the considerations of radial advection, thermal diffusion and different disk geometry, dominated pressure and optical depth. Two inertial-acoustic modes in a geometrically thin, radiative cooling dominated disk depart from each other if very little advection is included. A geometrically slim, advection-dominated disk is found to be always stable if it is optically thin. However, if it is optically thick, the thermal diffusion has no effect on the stable viscous mode but has a significant contribution to enhance the thermal instability.

  • Vapor Axial Deposition (VAD), one of optical fiber preform fabrication processes, is performed by deposition of submicron-size silica particles that are synthesized by combustion of raw chemical materials. In this study, flow field is assumed to be a forced uniform flow perpendicularly impinging on a rotating disk. Similarity solutions obtained in our previous study are utilized to solve the particle transport equation. The particles are approximated to be in a polydisperse state that satisfies a lognormal size distribution. A moment model is used in order to predict distributions of particle number density and size simultaneously. Deposition of the particles on the disk is examined considering convection, Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, and coagulation with variations of the forced flow velocity and the disk rotating velocity. The deposition rate and the efficiency directly increase as the flow velocity increases, resulting from that the increase of the forced flow velocity causes thinner thermal and diffusion boundary layer thicknesses and thus causes the increase of thermophoretic drift and Brownian diffusion of the particles toward the disk. However, the increase of the disk rotating speed does not result in the direct increase of the deposition rate and the deposition efficiency. Slower flow velocity causes extension of the time scale for coagulation and thus yields larger mean particle size and its geometric standard deviation at the deposition surface. In the case of coagulation starting farther from the deposition surface, coagulation effects increases, resulting in the increase of the particle size and the decrease of the deposition rate at the surface.

양방향 곡선 전개 방식을 이용한 망막영상에서의 시신경 원판 경계 검출 (Detection of the Optic Disk Boundary in Retinal Images Using Inward and Outward Curve Evolution)

  • 본 연구에서는 실명(loss of eyesight)의 원인 질병중 하나인 녹내장의 진행과 진단 등의 의료 정보제공을 목적으로 양방향 곡선 전개 방식을 이용하여 망막 영상에서 시신경 원판(optic disk)의 경계를 검출하는 방법을 제안한다. 정확한 경계 검출의 위하여 텍스처 병합(texture synthesis)기반의 이미지 인페인팅 방법으로 시신경 원판 위를 지나는 혈관을 제거하고 전처리 과정에서 발생하는 잡음제거와 경계의 보존을 위해 비등방성 확산 필터링(anisotropic diffusion filtering)을 행한다. 혈관이 제거된 망막 영상에서 시신경 원판의 경계 검출은 양방향 곡선 방식으로 검출한다. 실험 결과에서, 제안한 알고리즘은 복잡한 망막영상에도 효율적으로 시신경 원판을 검출한다는 것을 보여준다.

Radial and Circumferential Variations in Hygroscopicity and Diffusion Coefficients within a Tree Disk

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the variation of equilibrium moisture content (EMC) in transverse direction and three different directional (longitudinal, radial, and tangential) linear movements, and diffusion coefficients within a tree disc of Korean red pine (pinus densiflora). The EMC gradually increased in heartwood from pith. Therefore, the chemical components might differ even in heartwood and the radial variation in EMC might have a close relationship with the cellulose content within a cross section. The specific gravity increases gradually from pith and the porosity has not direct influence on the variation of EMC within a tree disk. Both the radial and tangential diffusion coefficients exhibited clear trend of increase from pith. The EMC change (${\Delta}EMC$) and tangential diffusion coefficient were close to be axisymmetrical but others were deviated from axisymmetry. The diffusion coefficient decreases with decreasing an activation energy and specific gravity, The diffusion coefficient increased with increasing ${\Delta}EMC$ and hygroscopicity of wood might be inversely proportional to the activation energy, The fJEMC may depend on the chemical constituents of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. As the number of sorption sites and sorption capacity of wood increase, therefore, it might be assumed that the hygroscopicity of wood increases while activation energy decreases. Modeling physico-mechanical behavior of wood, the variations should be considered to improve the accuracy.

디스크소스로부터 NAPL의 확산손실에 관한 수학적 모델 (Mathematical Models on Diffusive Loss of Non-Aqueous Phase Organic Solvents from a Disk Source)

  • 평평한 fractures에서 공극을 가진 모암으로의 NAPL 확산을 수치적인 방법으로 해석하였다. 2D와 3D에 대한 일회성 디스크 소스와 3D 연속 디스크소스에 대한 모델은 Caralaw and Jaeger(1959)의 이론을 바탕으로 개발하였다. 3D 연속 디스크소스에 대해 공극모암으로 확산되는 NAPL의 총량을 계산할 수 없기 때문에 확산이 반구형으로 이루어진다고 가정하여 등농도선의 합을 이용하여 공극모암으로 확산되는 NAPL의 총량을 계산하였다. 수치적 계산에 따르면 2D 대비 3D의 경우에 NAPL 손실 시간이 현저히 빠른 것으로 나타났으며, 디스크 소스의 중심점에서 normalized된 농도는 일회성 디스크 소스는 시간에 따라 감소하고, 연속 디스크 소스는 증가하는 것으로 나타났으며, 시간과 공간에 따라 확산율은 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 NAPL의 mass 손실은 1에 도달하지 못하였으며, 이는 연속 디스크 소스를 semi-infinite로 가정하고 적분했기 때문이다. 확산에 의해 사라지는 시간은 소스의 크기 및 모암 공극률 크기 증가에 비례해서 지수함수적으로 증가하고, 반면 NAPL의 용해성이 증가하면 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.

Susceptibility Testing of Helicobacter pylori to Metronidazole and DNA Fingerprints of Resistant Strains in Singapore

  • Susceptibility of 61 strains of Helicobacter pylori to metronidazole was examined by both the disk diffusion method using a cut-off of 15㎜ for resistance and the E test with a cut-off of 8㎎/l. The MIC/sub 50/ and MIC/sub 90/ by the E test were 2 ㎎/l and 256㎎/l, respectively. Metronidazole resistance was found in 22 (36%) out of the 61 H. pylori strains by the E test and in three additional strains by the disk diffusion method. Amongst the latter three isolates, the MICs by the E test were 4 ㎎/l, 6㎎/l, and 6㎎/l, respectively. These figures are one log₂ or half log₂ dilution lower than the cut-off of 8㎎/l recommended as resistance for the E test. All 22 metronidazole resistant H. pylori isolates by the E test that were subjected to random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting showed different DNA fingerprints. Interestingly, >90% of resistant isolates possess two common DNA bands of 0.4 and 0.9 kb. This study demonstrates that the results of the disk diffusion method for testing H. pylori susceptibility to metronidazole correlates well with that of the E test. The criteria for interpretation need to be internationally standardized so that the results from different centers can be compared.

감염근관에서 분리한 세균의 동정 및 항생제 감수성 검사 (INDENTIFICATION AND ANTIBIOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY TEST OF MICROORGANISMS ISOLATED FROM INFECTED ROOT CANALS)

  • Bacteria have been regarded as major etiolgic factors in root canal infections. Infected root canal flora from thirteen patients who had visited to conservative department of Wonkwang dental hospital were cultured on blood agar plates. Cultued microorganisms were isolated and identified with Gram stain and biochemical tests using Vitek Systems(BioMeriux, MO, USA); Antibiotic susceptibillity was performed with disk diffusion and broth microdilution using Vitek Systems. Gram positive cocci(65 %) were predominant, which were composed of 6 Streptococcus viridans group, 5 Staph. spp., and 4 Enterococcus faecium, in the isolatd 23 strains. Gram negative rods (26 %) were the next common bacteria, which were composed of 5 non - fermentative Gram negative rods, and 1 Enterobacter cloacae. Most strains of S. viridans group and E. faecium were susceptible to antibiotics including penicillin. But strains of Staphylococcus spp. and non - fermentative Gram negative rods showed marked resistance to antibiotics except tetrancyclin and cefotaxime. Most results between disk diffusion and microdilution were all agreed, but the results of non - fermentative Gram negative rods were susceptible to cefotaxime in disk diffusion method but resistant in microdilution.
