Robust Servo Design and Application for Optical Disk Drive using Robust Control Theory: QFT vs. H_inf (광 디스크 서보 설계를 위한 강건 제어 이론의 적용 및 평가: QFT vs. $H_{\infty}$)

  • In this paper, the various uncertainties, which are generated in working of an optical disk drive, are discussed in details and the robust servo design considering the uncertainties are discussed. First, the classification of the uncertainties and the modeling process including that are treated. Then, the robust servo designs using QFT and $H_{\infty}$ theory are performed. Finally, the designed servo loops realized by DSP are applied to the real system. From these experiments, we proved that the robust servo design using QFT and $H_{\infty}$ have a good performance and a good robust stability when it compared with the conventional servo loop.

  • 본 논문에서는 불량 하드디스크 드라이브의 수리판정 자동화를 위해 필요한 하드디스크 드라이브(Hard Disk Drive, HDD) 결함의 분포패턴의 분류에 관한 연구 결과를 소개한다. HDD 제조공정에서는 테스트 진행 중 검출된 결함에 관한 정보를 HDD 내부에 기록한다. 불량으로 판별된 HDD는 내부에 기록된 결함의 분포론 관찰한 후, 불량의 종류 및 그에 따른 처리방안을 결정한다. 본 논문에서는 효율적인 결함분포 패턴의 특징추출을 위해, 하드디스크의 물리적 특성에 대한 분석을 바탕으로 극좌표 (Polar Coordinates) 방식으로 표현된 결함 위치 데이터를 직교좌표(Cartesian Coordinates)로 변환한다. 그리고 디스크 상의 두 동심원 사이의 공간을 정해진 회전각별로 등분한 후, 나누어진 구간별로 결함 발생빈도 히스토그램 (Histogram) 분석을 수행하여 결함분포의 패턴을 분류하는 알고리즘을 제시한다. 설계된 알고리즘은 실제 HDD 제조공정에서 발생한 불량 HDD Set을 대상으로 적용한 결과, 그 효용성이 검증되었다.

  • This paper proposes a pattern classification algorithm for the defect distribution of Hard Disk Drive (HDD). In the HDD productions, the defect pattern of defective HDD set is important information to diagnosis of defective HDD set. In this paper, 5 characteristics are determined for the classification to six standard defect pattern classes. A fuzzy inference system is proposed, the inputs of which are 5 characteristic values and the outputs are the possibilities that the input pattern is classified to the standard patterns. Classification result is the pattern with maximum possibility. The proposed algorithm is implemented with a PC system for defective HDD sets and shows its effectiveness.

  • Hard Disk Drive (HDD) test system is the equipment for the final test of HDD product by iterative read/write/seek test. This paper proposes an expert system for the fault diagnosis of HDD test systems. The purposed expert system is composed with two cascade inference, fuzzy logic and conventional binary logic. The fuzzy logic determines the possibility of the system fault using the test history data, then, the binary logic inferences the fault location of the test system. The proposed expert system is tested in SAMSUNG HDD product line, KUMI, KOREA, and shows satisfactory results.

  • There are significant nonlinearities and uncertainties in hard disk drive actuators. In particular, pivot bearing nonlinearity and repeatable run-out make track-following control difficult as track density increases. In this paper, we design a robust track-following controller using a robust deterministic control scheme in which the pivot bearing nonlinearity and repeatable run-out are considered as uncertainties. Simulation study is conducted to evaluate the control performance of the proposed control scheme.

  • In this paper, we present a new control structure which is obtained by adding an appropriately designed filter to a conventional disturbance observer. The proposed controlled system preserves advantages of a system with the conventional disturbance observer; disturbance rejection and nominal performance recovery. In particular, by embedding the filter, the disturbance rejection performance is enhanced compared with that of the classical disturbance observer-based controlled system. Moreover, we suggest a condition for the robust internal stability of the considered system in this paper. Simulation results regarding an effect of relatively high-frequency disturbance on hard disk drive are also presented.

  • Generally, the tracking performance of optical disk drive(ODD) system can be improved using a disturbance observer(DOB). However, a DOB is not easily applied in an ODD system because an additional microprocessor, such as a digital signal processor(DSP), is needed. This paper shows how a DOB system can be replaced by the error-based modified disturbance observer(EM-DOB) when two mathematical conditions are satisfied. Due to the simplified structure of EM-DOB, the algorithm is easily implemented as an analog circuit, which is suitable for the ODD servo system. Additionally, in these algorithms, disturbances rejection performances can be tuned as Q filter parameters. Similar to a DOB system, three design guidelines of a Q filter can be applied. Experimental results of DOB and EM-DOB are evaluated under forced disturbances.

  • In this paper, the track pull-in behavior analyses in an optical disk drive (ODD) using plane phase is treated and the parameters affecting it are discussed. Track pull-in is the track capture procedure to do track following control and it is key factor to increase data transfer rate. Simulation method, Runge-Kutta method to solve nonlinear equation, is used to evaluate the track pull-in conditions, and the real servo loop parameters are applied in this process to get the more real condition. Finally, the comments for the acquired results are discussed briefly.

  • Nowadays, mobile devices are very common equipments such as mobile phone, PDA, etc. These equipments need information storage devices. Optical storage devices have more advantages than other storage devices, but it is not free from shock situation like dropping by user's mistakes. A complete model of a Small Form Factor Optical(SFFO) disk drive subject to shock loads is developed to investigate the response of the pickup/disk interface. With this model, we can simulate the drop test and consider the matters of shock simulation using commercial software(Ansys/LS-Dyna).
