  • Background: Many studies have been conducted on presenteeism and absenteeism, but the relationship between presenteeism and absenteeism is unclear. This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of presenteeism on future absenteeism. Methods: This study was conducted on non-white collar workers that underwent general health examinations in 2014 and 2015. We asked subjects to fill out a questionnaire about their experiences of presenteeism for the past one year in 2014. In 2015, it was checked whether the same subjects had any experience of absence from work due to injury or disease during the past year. The χ2 test was used to analyze relationships between sociodemographic and occupational characteristics, presenteeism, and absence. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated by logistic regression analysis controlled for confounding factors. Results: A total of 12,572 workers were included in the study. For workers who experienced presenteeism, the OR for injury absence was 2.705 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.044-3.581), and the OR for disease absence was 4.906 (95% CI: 3.996-6.024) after adjusting for sociodemographic and occupational confounding factors. For men that experienced presenteeism, the OR for injury absence was 3.035 (95% CI: 2.258-4.081), and the OR for disease absence was 5.508 (95% CI: 4.340-6.989). For women that experienced presenteeism, the OR for injury absence was 1.322 (95% CI: 0.577-3.028), which was not significant, and the OR for disease absence was 3.629 (95% CI: 2.405-5.475). Conclusions: This study suggests that presenteeism can influence future absenteeism. The effect of presenteeism may depend on cause of absence. Men who experienced presenteeism showed greater effects on injury and disease absence than women. For women, experience of presenteeism had a significant effect on disease absence but not on injury absence.

  • In January 2020, COVID19 plunged the whole planet into a pandemic. This has caused great economic losses and is causing social confusion. COVID19 has a superior infection rate among people with underlying disease such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, depression, and cancer. In addition, it was studied that patients with underlying disease had a higher fatality rate than those without underlying disease. In this study, the presence or absence of underlying disease was classified using EEG data. The data used to classify the presence or absence of underlying disease was EEG data provided by Data Science lab, consisting of 33 features and 69 samples. Z-score was used for data pretreatment. Classification was performed using the neural network NEWFM and ZNN engine. As a result of the classification of the presence or absence of the underlying disease, the experimental results were 77.945 for NEWFM and 76.4% for ZNN. Through this study, it is expected that EEG data can be measured, the presence or absence of an underlying disease is classified, and those with a high infection rate can be prevented from COVID19. Based on this, there is a need for research that can subdivide underlying disease in the future and research on the effects of each underlying disease on infectious disease.

  • Hirschsprung's disease is one of the most common causes of intestinal obstruction in neonates and infants. The underlying pathology of this disease is the absence of the ganglion cells in both the myenteric (Auerbach's) plexus and the submucosal (Meissner's) plexus. Since Hirschsprung's report in 1886, there have been thousands of papers on Hirschsprung's disease but the cause of the absence of the ganglion cells has not been identified. Hirschsprung's disease can be successfully treated with the Swenson, the Duhamel, and the Soave operations even though the pathogenesis is unknown. With the recent progress of molecular biology and genetics, a more detailed approach to the pathogenesis of Hirschsprung's disease can be undertaken. In addition, there have been recent developments in the surgical approach. In this review, recent advances in surgery for Hirschsprung's disease are presented.

  • Objectives: This study investigated health behavior and nutritional status according to the presence or absence of periodontal disease using data from the Sixth National Health Nutrition Survey. Methods: Data from the 2013-2015 National Health Nutrition Survey were analyzed by frequency analysis, chi-square test, and Pearson's correlation analysis using SPSS 21.0. Results: Periodontal disease was more frequent in the group of patients who perceived that their subjective health status was "very bad" or were underweight according to the BMI classification. In men, periodontal disease occurred more frequently in those who were taking calcium (p<0.05), and periodontal disease occurred more frequently in the age group of 20-39, regardless of sex (p<0.05). In women, periodontal disease was less frequent in the group taking vitamin A. In both men and women, the presence of periodontal disease correlated with high fasting blood sugar and glycated hemoglobin levels. Conclusions: A customized program should be developed for each patient to identify factors that affect the relationship among periodontal disease, nutrient intake, and blood parameters. Such information will help improve the oral health of the population.

  • In addition to classic cholinergic and adrenergic pathways, the existence of a third division of autonomic control in the human airways has been proved. It is called a nonadrenergic noncholinergic(NANC) nervous system, and difficult to study in the absence of specific blockers. Neuropeptides are certainly suggested to be transmitters of this NANC nervous system. It is very frustrating to understand the pathophysiologic role of these peptides in the absence of any specific antagonists. However, further studies of neuropeptides might eventually lead to novel forms of treatment for bronchial asthma. Another study of the interaction between different components of the autonomic nervous system, either in ganglionic neurotransmission or by presynaptic modulation of neurotransmitters at the end-organ will elute neural control in airway disease, particularly in asthma. Studies of how autonomic control may be disordered in airway disease should lead to improvements in clinical management. Epithelial damage due to airway inflammation in asthma may induce bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Axon reflex mechanism is one of possible mechanisms in bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Epithelial damage may expose sensory nerve terminals and C-fiber nrve endings are stimulated by inflammatory mediators. Bi-directional communication between the nerves and mast cells may have important roles in allergic process. The psychological factors and conditioning of allergic reactions is suggested that mast cell activation might be partly regulated by the central nervous system via the peripheral nerves. Studies in animal models, in huamn airways in vitro and in patients with airway disease will uncover the interaction between allergic disease processes and psychologic factors or neural mechainsms.

  • This study was conducted to find medical care utilization pattern and to examine the affecting factors on medical facilities utilization using Andersen's medical care service behavioral model. Three hundreds and five public officials with detected disease through the health examination in 1998 were surveyed using self-administered questionnaire. And 230 data were available and analyzed. The results of this study were summarized as follows: Among variables of predisposing factors, knowledge for disease, confidence about periodic health examination program in health insurance, and the attitude toward medical utilization in the usual showed significant relations with the medical utilization. Other variables were not related with the medical utilization. Variables of enabling factors did not show significant relations with the medical utilization. Recognition of family members for detected disease had significant relations with the medical utilization. Among variables of need factors, absence caused by detected disease was significantly related with the medical utilization. The number of non-occupational diseases detected, but untreated people were 75(32.6%) of total subjects, mainly because detected diseases seemed insignificant to them. With multiple logistic regression analysis, the significant variables having an effect on the medical facilities utilization were 'knowledge for disease', 'attitude toward medical utilization in the usual', 'recognition of family members for detected disease' and 'experience of absence caused by detected disease'. On considerations of above findings, counselling for detected disease and its treatment, health education for individuals and program for family support promotion are needed for health management of public officials with diseases detected in health examination.

  • The classification of periodontal disease in 1999 has been widely used for determining a diagnosis, establishing a treatment plan, and evaluating the prognosis of the patient with periodontal disease. However, scientific evidence from many studies indicates the need for a new classification system for periodontal and peri-implant disease. Summary at 2017 world workshop as follows: 1) Periodontal health and peri-implant health was defined; 2) Chronic periodontitis and aggressive periodontitis were unified as periodontitis; 3) Periodontitis was further classified by staging and grading to reflect disease severity and management complexity, rate of disease progression, respectively; 4) Periodontal disease as manifestation of systemic disease is based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems-10 (ICD-10) code; 5) Periodontal biotype and biologic width was replaced to periodontal phenotype and supracrestal tissue attachment, respectively; 6) The excessive occlusal force was replaced by a traumatic occlusal force; 7) ≥3 mm of radiographic bone loss, ≥6 mm of pocket probing depth and bleeding on probing indicates peri-implantitis in the absence of radiograph at final prosthesis delivery.
