A hybrid system is defined as a mixture of continuous systems and discrete event systems. This paper first proposes a framework for hybrid systems modeling, called Hybrid Discrete Event System Specification (HDEVS) formalism. It then presents a method for simulators interoperation in which a continuous system simulator and a discrete event simulator are executed together in a cooperative manner. The formalism can specify a hybrid system in a way that a continuos system and a discrete event system are separately modeled by their own specification formalisms with a support of well-defined interface. We call such interface an A/E converter for analog-to- event conversion and an E/A converter for event-to-analog conversion. Simulators interoperation is based on the concept of pre-simulation in which simulation time for a continuous simulator is advanced in accordance with a discrete event simulator.
This paper describes a methodology for the development of models of discrete event system. The methodology is based on transformation of continuous state space into discrete one to homomorphically represent dynamics of continuous processes in discrete events. This paper proposes a formal structure which can coupled discrete event system models within a framework. The structure employs the discrete event specification formalism for the discrete event system models. The proposed formal structure has been applied to develop a discrete event specification model for the complex spectral density analysis of strip for urin analyzer system. For this, spectral density data of strip is partitioned into a set of Phases based on events identified through urine spectrophotometry. For each phase, a continuous system of the continuous model for the urine spectral density analysis has been simulated by programmed C++. To validate this model, first develop the discrets event specification model, then simulate the model in the DEVSIM++ environment. It has the similar simulation results for the data obtained from the continuous system simulation. The comparison shows that the discrete event specification model represents dynamics of the urine spectral density at each phase.
Petri nets is a widely used formalism for specification and analysis of concurrent systems which is a subclass of discrete event systems. The DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) formalism provides a general framework for specification of discrete event systems in a hierarchical, modular form. Often, modeling a discrete event system may employ both Petri Nets and DEVS formalism. In such a case low-level operational logics are modeled by Petri Nets and high-level managements by the DEVS formalism. Analysis of the system requires simulation of the overall system. This paper presents an algorithm for transformation of Petri Nets to DEVS formalism. The transformation enables modelers to simulate an overall system, which consists of DEVS models and Petri Nets models, in a unified DEVS simulation environment such as DEVSim++. An example for such transformation will be given.
A magnetically levitated vehicle (Maglev) system is under commercialization as a new transportation system in Korea. The Maglev is operated by an unmanned automatic control system. Therefore, the plan of train operation should be carefully established and validated in advance. In general, when making a train operation plan, statistically predicted traffic data is used. However, a traffic wave often occurs in real train service, and demand-driven simulation technology is required to review a train operation plan and service quality considering traffic waves. We propose a method and model to simulate Maglev operation considering continuous demand changes. For this purpose, we employed a discrete event model that is suitable for modeling the behavior of railway passenger transportation. We modeled the system hierarchically using discrete event system specification (DEVS) formalism. In addition, through implementation and an experiment using the DEVSim++ simulation environment, we tested the feasibility of the proposed model. Our experimental results also verified that our demand-driven simulation technology can be used for a priori review of train operation plans and strategies.
In order to cope with the changes of container terminal situation in these days, many simulation studies for container terminal have been accomplished. But previous simulation studies using simulation language have limitations in model representation and difficulties in modeling of large scaled container terminal system. To make these problems better, this paper addresses an object-oriented simulation of container terminal system using a DEVS formalism. The DEVS(Discrete Event System Specification) formalism, developed by Zeigler, supports specification of discrete event system in a hierarchical and modular manner. The formalism provides a mathematical basis for studying discrete event systems with better understood and sounder semantics. In a step of system modeling, a DEVS formalism aims at the exact system modeling that has a basis of semantics and utilizing the object-oriented manner can flexibly cope with the changes of system environment. In this study a model is developed and verified through the simulation of some alternatives.
As complexity of real-time systems is being increased ad hoc approaches to analysis of such systems would have limitations in completeness and coverability for states space search. Formal means using a model-based approach would solve such limitations. This paper proposes a model-based formal method for logical analysis, such as safety and liveness, of real-time systems at a discrete event system level. A discrete event model for real-time systems to be analyzed is specified by DEVS(Discrete Event Systems Specification) formalism, which specifies a discrete event system in hierarchical, modular manner. Analysis of such DEVS models is performed by Communicating DEVS (C-DEVS) formalism of a timed global state transition specification and an associated analysis algorithm. The C-DEVS formalism and an associated analysis algorithm guarantees that all possible states for a given system are visited in an analysis phase. A case study of a safety analysis for a rail road crossing system illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed method of the model-based approach.
Avionics System Integration Laboratory is the integrated test environment for integration and verification of avionics systems. When real equipment can not be used in the laboratory for various reasons, software models should be needed. Because there hasn't been any standardized method for the models so that it is difficult to reuse the developed models, the need for a framework to develop the avionics software models was emerged. We adopted DEVS(discrete event system specification) formalism as the standardized modeling method for the avionics software models. Due to DEVS formalism is based on event-driven algorithm, it doesn't accord a legacy system which has sequential and periodic algorithms. In this paper, we propose real-time event-driven modeling and simulation method for SIL to overcome these restrictions and to maximize reusability of avionics models through the analysis of the characteristics and the limitations of avionics models.

When it comes to design and acquire underwater vehicles such as a submarine and a torpedo according to the process of SBA(Simulation Based Acquisition)/SBD(Simulation Based Design), it is necessary to predict the performance of interest precisely and to perform the test over and over again using the M&S(Modeling and Simulation) of the engineering and the engagement level. In this paper, we research the DEVS(Discrete Event System Specification) and DTSS(Discrete Time System Specification) formalism based standard model architecture for the underwater vehicle which can support both the heterogeneous level of the M&S(Engineering/Engagement) and the different system of the M&S(Discrete Event System and Discrete Time System). To validate this standard modeling architecture, we apply it to the submarine normal diving simulation.

Recently, requests for the accurate process planning using modeling and simulation technique are increasing in many engineering fields including shipbuilding industry. In this study, Combined DEVS(Discrete EVent System specification) and DTSS(Discrete Time System Specification) simulation kernel is developed, and an integration strategy of dynamics simulation module and graphics module is also implemented. To evaluate the efficiency and applicability of the simulation kernel and integration strategy, these are applied to the block erection simulation of offshore structures.
Simulation Framework is a basic software tool used to develop simulation applications. This paper describes the development of a discrete event simulation framework based on DEVS(Discrete EVent System Specification) formalism, using MATLAB language which is widely used in technical computing and engineering disciplines. The newly developed framework utilizing MATLAB object oriented programming combines the convenience of MATLAB language and the sophisticated architecture of the DEVS formalism. Hence, it supports the productivity, flexibility, extensibility that are required for the simulation application software development of the weapon systems engagement. Moreover, it promises a simulation application the increased the computation speed proportional to the number of CPU of a multi-core processor, providing the batch simulation functionality based on MATLAB parallel computing technology.
