  • Background: Provocative discography (PD) is a test that is useful in diagnosing discogenic pain (DP). In this study, to diagnose DP, we used a posterolateral approach of needle placement and followed pressure criteria laid down by the Spine Intervention Society. The aim was to identify the correlation between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings (desiccation, high intensity zone and change in shape and size of the disc) and the results of PD. Methods: Records of 50 patients who underwent PD for DP were analyzed. A total of 109 PDs were performed, with 54 suspect and 55 control discs. Alternate pain generators were ruled out. Results: A total of 35 suspect discs were positive on PD. The mean disc pressure in the suspect disc was 31.9 ± 7.9 psi (range, 15-44). Of the 50 patients who underwent PD, 35 had positive MRI findings. A significant positive correlation was found only between disc desiccation and discography result (r = 0.6, P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that only desiccation successfully predicted the result of discography (OR = 26.5, P < 0.001); a high intensity zone and a disc protrusion/extrusion had an OR 2.3 and 1.24, respectively. Disc desiccation of Pfirmann grade 3 or more had a sensitivity and specificity of 0.93 and 0.64 respectively in identifying painful discs; the positive likelihood ratio was 2.58 while the negative likelihood ratio was 0.11. Conclusions: In patients with DP, disc desiccation is the most useful MRI feature that predicts a painful disc on PD.

  • Dual Pulse Rocket Motor is a solid rocket motor with two grains separated by a bulkhead and rupture disc. The elasto-plastic explicit dynamic analysis of rupture disc was conducted by the finite element method. The effect of the slit geometry of rupture disc with radial slit was parametrically analyzed in terms of rupture time and shape. The results can be used to control the rupture pressure by changing the slit geometry of rupture disc.

  • In this paper, the method and its effectiveness to decrease the uneven wear of the brake pad were proposed. A finite element analysis was performed to analyze the pressure distributions on the contact surfaces. The optimum brake pad shape was determined by a robust design using the Taguchi method. The effectiveness of the optimum design was clarified by the wear tests with a dynamometer.

  • In the viscosity measurement of PIM feedstock, slip correction methods require a number of experiments and produce a high level of error. In this study, a rotational rheometer with a parallel-discs configuration having different surface roughness was tried to minimize the effect of the slip phenomenon. Disc surface was prepared in 3 different roughness conditions - a smooth and 2 roughened surfaces. Results with the roughened surfaces were compared with the results obtained with a slip correction method. Relationship between powder characteristics such as size and shape and a surface roughness of the disc was examined for feedstock of 4 different powders with a same binder. As results, the effect of the slip phenomenon could be sufficiently minimized on the roughened surface in most cases. However, the effect of the slip phenomenon could not be sufficiently minimized for feedstock of a round-particular-shape powder and in the case of very narrow gap size.

  • Scythian Earrings in the Black Sea region had completely degenerated, stifled by motifs and shapes of Greek origin, retaining its representational realism and its full emotional vitality. The purpose of this study is to review and research the symbolic meaning and classifying the types of the Scythian Earrings style through the tombs bequests. The Scythian Earrings were divided into the styles according to the shape, Earring with Ends Shaped like animal's Heads, Boat-Shaped Earrings, Bird-Shaped Pendants earrings, Earrings with a Disc and a Pendant, Earrings Shaped like the Figures, Earring with the drop Pendant, Spiral Earrings. Earrings based on the boat shape enjoyed a long popularity among the Scythians. As that form became elaborated and combined with the disk-pendent, it reflected native rather than Asian or Hellenic tastes. Although Scythian earrings were produced based on the shapes of Greece earrings, they recreated these as Scythian unique style. In particular, the animal motive and the decoration have various changes. The exquisite earrings attest to the elegant taste and splendid wealth of the upper classes.

  • The permeation experiments were carried out to examine the separation characteristics of the modules which were piled up the disc-ring shape patterned membranes in this study. First of all, permeability of the pure water was measured for the self-made 5 shape disc filters, and varied from 0.25 to $2.24L/m^2{\cdot}hr{\cdot}bar$. The module showed the maximum pure water permeability was the maximum permeation flux, and the module showed the minimum pure water permeability was the minimum permeation flux for 0.1 wt% kaolin solution. However, all of the modules were not proportioned to the pure water permeability. Also, the backwashing was performed periodically for the module 1 in order to operate with 0.1 wt% kaolin solution for a long time. The most efficient operating condition was the 8 minute permeation and 2 minute backwashing cycle.

  • In this paper, the shape design process is briefly discussed emphasizing the use of topology optimization in the conceptual design stage. The basic idea is to view feasible domains for sensitivity region concepts. In this method, the main process consists of two steps: as the design moves further inside the feasible domain using Taguchi method, and thus becoming more successful topology optimization, the sensitivity region becomes larger. In designing a double-eccentric butterfly valve, related to hydrodynamic performance and disc structure, are discussed where the use of topology optimization has proven to dramatically improve an existing design and significantly decrease the development time of a shape design. CFD analysis results demonstrate the validity of this approach.

  • Test castings in plate, disc, and cubic shaped castings for 0.2wt.% carbon and stainless steel have been poured to examine the effects of the riser dimensions including riser neck on the casting soundness. Three empirical methods were chosen in risering of steel castings. A computer program of solidification analysis considering liquid and solidification contraction was developed to apply for riserdesign calculated by using their methods in plate, disc, and cubic shaped castings, and to calculate the position and dimension of shrinkage cavity in complex shaped casting. The potential of present method has been successfully demonstrated by comparing predicted cavity shapes with those obtained in a series of experimental castings. Three empirical methods can be used in a practical way to make a rapid estimation of tie minimum riser diameter, but they can not provide a criterion of casting soundness with shape and material on all occasions. The shape and position of shrinkage cavity can be successfully predicted both using the present method and using risering calculated by their methods regardless of the shape and cast material.
