Physical Characteristics and Germination of Pelleted Tobacco Seeds Depending on Moulding Materials (성형재료에 따른 담배 펠렛 종자의 물리적 틀성과 발아율)

  • A seed pelleting technique was developed for easy handling of small tobacco seeds (variety, NC82) and for direct seeding in temperary planting bed or in field. The mixture of pelleting material, binder and seeds were moulded in cylindrical holes sized 2 mm diameter and 2 mm height in a plastic plate. Bentonite and cellulose powder were good materials to make pellets with CMC as binder, and bentonite formed the hardest pelleted seeds among the materials. The number of the pelleted seeds made with the same weight of the materials was different with materials used and the number of seeds contained in a pelleted seed could be controlled by mixture ratio of materials and seeds. The seedless pellets ranged 6.9 to 16.0% at the ratio of pelleting material and seed for 2~3 seeds in a pellet. The moisture absorption rate at 100% RH and $25^{\circ}C$ was greater in the order of clay < bentonite < cellulose. Germination rates of pelleted seeds with bentonite and cellulose were similar to that of usual seed, but it was significantly lower with clay pelleted seeds.

Antimutagenic Effects of Extracts of Curry Powder and Its Individual Spice (카레분 및 향신료 추출물의 항 돌연변이 효과)

  • Antimutagenic effects of extracts from curry powder and its individual fourteen kinds of spices, were investigated by Ames test. The antimutagenic effects against a direct mutagen, 2-nitrofluorene(2 -NF) and two indirect mutagens, 2-anthramine(2-AT) and 2-acetamidofluorene (2-AE) in the S. typhimurium TA98 were tested. For the 2-NF, the antimutagenicity of cinnamon, fenugreek, fennel, ginger, clove, turmeric and celery seed were determined as 42, 38, 32, 28, 24, 23 and 20%, respectively. The antimutagenicity of clove against the 2-AT was the highest (116%), and followed by the order of celery seed(103%), cardamon(100%), red pepper(99%), cinnamon(92%), cumin(83%), ginger(82%), fennel(82%), coriander (71%), nutmeg(68%) and turmeric (55%). The results also showed that the antimutagenic effect of clove against the 2-AF was superior to other spices. In case of curry powder among more than 10 kinds of spices, the antimutagenenicity against the 2-AT and 2-AF showed 23% and 6%, respectively, but no effect was observed against the 2-NF.

Lodging and Yield of Direct Surface Seeded Rice as Influenced by N Levels, PP333 Treatments, and Seeding Rates (질소 수준, PP333처리 및 파종량이 담수표면 직파재배벼의 도복과 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • To establish the method of direct seeding cultivation in rice (Oryza sativa L.), direct surface seeding with treatments of N application rate, application of growth regulator(PP333), and seeding rate were conducted from May to Oct., 1989 at the experimental field of Sunchon National University. There were no significant differences among treatment means of N application rates, and seeding rates, which seemed to be due to severe occurrence of field lodging. Application of PP333 reduced culm length by 3-4m, but it did not affect the occurrence of lodging. The optimal seeding rate to maximize the number of spikelets per unit area was estimated to be 6kg seed /10a. To obtain stable yield in cultivation of direct surface seeded rice in submerged paddy field, it was necessary to reduce occurrence of field lodging through breeding of lodging resistance genotypes rather than cultural practices.

  • For analyzing the direct contamination pathway of radionudides in rice plants, a Solution containing $^{54}Mn,\;^{57}Co,\;^{85}Sr,\;^{103}Ru$ and $^{134}Cs$ was applied to the aboveground Parts of the between RI application and harvest. Its highest observed value was 0.94. The fractions of the initial plant deposition that remained in rice plants at harvest were in the range of $19{\sim}47%,\;17{\sim}43%,\;19{\sim}42%,\;23{\sim}61%$ and $11{\sim}69%$ for $^{54}Mn,\;^{57}Co,\;^{85}Sr,\;^{103}Ru$ and $^{134}Cs$, respectively, when no decay was assumed. The translocation factors of those radionuclides in hulled seeds were in the range of $6.9{\times}10^{-4}3.8{\times}10^{-2},\;3.6{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}1.6{\times}10^{-1},\;5.8{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}3.2{\sim}10^{-2},\;1.6{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}7.6{\times}10^{-3}$ and $3.2{\times}10^{-2}{\sim}2.0{\times}10^{-1}$, respertively, and were highest when they were applied at the stage of active seed development. It was indicated that the remaining percentage and translocation factor would not be greatly affected by the difference in the rain frequency if it is within a factor of 2. These results can be utilzed for predicting the radionuclide concentrations in rice seeds when an accidental deposition of those radionuclides occurs during the rice-growing season.

Bakanae Disease Reduction Effect by Use of Silicate Coated Seed in Wet Direct-Seeded Rice (규산코팅 벼 종자를 이용한 담수직파재배 시 벼 키다리병 경감효과)

  • To investigate the effect of soluble silicate zeolite dressing of the rice against bakanae disease, field trial in reclaimed land and in vitro were carried out. The coated rice seeds (SCS) which were dressed with the mixture of 25% silicic acids (binder), and the zeolite (coating powder). In wet direct seeding, uniform scattering of rice seeds on the soil surface and the better seedling establishment were shown in SCS treatment plots. The incidence of bakanae disease began from the mid tillering stage toward the heading stage. Around heading stage, the ratio of infected tillers reached its highest point by 9.9% in non-SCS treatment plots. While, in SCS treatment plots, the ratio of infected tillers was no more than 0.01%. The vitality of the pathogenic fungi of bakanae disease in the SCS and non-SCS samples were assessed. Samples were incubated for one week keeping proper humidity at $30^{\circ}C$ after inoculated with panicles of infected rice plants from experimental field plots. In non-SCS treatment, pinkish colonies were formed on the grain surface of panicle of infected plants, and mycelium, macro-conidia and micro-conidia were developed actively inside part of infected grain inoculated. While in SCS treatment, micro-conidia and mycelium were not survived and the growth of macro-conidia, mycelia were greatly inhibited and withered. Based on the results, it is concluded that the environmental friendly control of bakanae disease by use of SCS is possible and soluble silicate can be applied as agents for replacement of seed disinfection.

Influence of Thickness of Styrofoam-Panel on Tobacco Seedling Growth in Newly Developed Floating System (새로 개발된 부상형 육묘에 있어서 스티로포움 판의 두께가 연초 묘 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • The inluence of styrofoam-panel thickness of floating frame on the seedling growth of flue-cured tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L.) in the newly developed direct-seed float system was investigated . Floating frame used instead of styrofoam-tray consisted of styrofoam-panel (106×108cm) for floating, eight holes(1.Sx2S.0 cm) to uniform the water, and nutrition supply far seedling and water and nutrition absorption cloth placed on the styrofoam-panel. Each floating-frame may lay eight plastic-trays on it. Eight grades of styrofoam-panel thickness from 26 mm to 46mm and two kinds of media were used in the greenhouse system. Dry cells were found from the styrofoam-panel thickness of 43mm in carbonized chaff, compost and original soil rate of L3-3(v/v) media, and of 37mm in peat and perlite rate of 8-2(v/v) media. The thinner styrofoam-panel produced more tender and succulent seedling with the more trunk and the less root weight. When considering the appearance of dry cell, seedling growth, producing healthy tobacco seedlings, and utilization of styrofoam-panel for two kinds of medias the ideal styrofoam-panel thickness were suggested to be around 34mm for flue-cured tobacco reeling production in the newly developed direct-seeding float system.   • The LDS(Laser Direct Structuring) process uses thermoplastic polymers with a additive compound that serves as plating seed after the activation by laser. It can realize industry requirement such as miniaturization of electrical component, design flexibility and reduction of production steps. The purpose of this study is to introduce LDS, and to investigate the fundamental mechanism. Also the characteristics of conductive patterns were investigated with respect to laser fluence and intensity. We have used a pulsed fiber laser (wavelength : 1064nm) and copper electroless plating to fabricate conductive patterns. The result showed that laser induced metal-organic complex was caused metalization by electroless copper plating, the critical laser fluence was $1.41\;J/cm^2$ at a scan speed of 1 m/s.

Effects of Seedling Ages on Growth and Yield of Cynanchum wilfordii $H_{EMSLY}$ (백하수오(白何首烏)의 묘령(苗齡)에 따른 생육(生育)과 수량(收量))

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of direct seeding and planting of seedlings in different ages on yield and yield characteristics of Cynanchum wilfordii $H_{EMSLY}$. Emergence date was three days earlier in direct seeding compared to May 14 in plots planted with one - or three - year - old seedlings. Petiole length was 16cm and 26cm longer in direct seeding and 1 - year - old seedlings, respectively, compared to 279cm in plot of 3 - year - old seedling. Root diameter was 0.4cm thicker in direct seeding and 0.5cm thicker in 1 - year - old seedlings compared to 1.0cm in seedlings of three years old. Root length was 7.2cm shorter in direct seeding, but was 0.6cm longer in 1 - year - old seedlings than 32.2cm in seedlings of three years old. Yield increased by 29 % in direct seeding and 55% in seedlings of one year old compared to 1,403kg/l0a in 3 - year - old seedlings. In cultivation of Cynanchum wilfordii $H_{EMSLY}$, the suitable planting methods were direct seeding or the use of 1 - year - old seedlings which were profitable at higher density as $50{\times}10cm$.

Diaspore, seed dispersion and seed germination characteristics of two myrmecochrous spring ephemerals -Jeffersonia dubia and Corydalis remota- (개미가 종자를 산포하는 춘계단명식물 깽깽이풀과 현호색의 전파체, 종자산포 및 발아 특성)

  • This study examined the germination characteristics by collecting fruits and pretreatment of the diaspore from April 2014 to June 2015 to investigate the diaspore characteristics, seed dispersion, and seed germination characteristics of two myrmecochorous spring ephemerals (MCSE): -Jeffersonia dubia (Jb) and Corydalis remota (Cr)-. The diaspore of Jb was about 5mm-long yellow-dark brown, oblong seeds with the attached amorphous white elaiosome. The mean weights of diaspore, seed, and elaiosome were 15.86mg, 13.46mg, and 2.40mg, respectively, and the elaiosome ratio was 15.13%. The diaspore of Cr was about 1.2mm diameter and glossy black ovoid seeds with the attached white spatula-shaped elaiosome. The mean weights of diaspore, seed, and elaisome were 2.58mg, 2.05mg, and 0.53mg, respectively, and the elaiosome ratio was 20.54%. Camponotus niponensis and Formica japonica transported the diaspore of Jb while Formica japonica and Lasius japonicus transported the diaspore of Cr. The germination percentage of Jb seeds was statistically significant and had the significance level of 1% with the pretreatment and date of sowing. However, it was independent of attachment of elaiosome. The mean germination percentages of Jb seeds was 65.0% during sowing on June 20, 17.5% during sowing on August 19, and 0% during sowing on October 20. The germination percentage of Cr was statistically significant and had the significance level of 5% and 1% with the attachment of elaisome and date of sowing, respectively. The mean germination rates were 54.17% and 35.0% in the non-treatment section and the treatment section with elaisome detached, respectively. The mean germination percentages of Cr seeds was 75.0% during sowing on June 20, 53.75% during sowing on August 19, and 5.0% during sowing on October 20. Considering the fact that the ants transported the diaspores to the ant house when the fruits of MCSE were ripened and dropped the seeds, the direct seeding right after collecting may be most suitable to the characteristics of the evolution of these plant species and may be the best method to obtain the highest germination percentages. Since the ants distribute their seeds, the MCSE produces and attaches the elaiosome to the seed to maintain the symbiotic relationship with ants. The ants then transport the seed to the ant house where the environment is controlled for suitable temperature and humidity, and then the MCSE succeeds in germination after the embryo grows sufficiently in the next spring.

Antimicrobial Activities of Botanical Antimicrobial Agent-Grapefruit Seed Extract Mixture for the Preparation of Anitimicrobial Packaging Paper (항균포장지 제조용 식물성 자몽종자추출물제재의 항균특성)

  • Botanical antimicrobial agent-grapefruit seed extract mixture(BAAG), which could be applied to the preparation of antimicrobial packaging paper, was investigated in order to prove the preservative function of fruits and vegetables. HAAG showed remarkable antimicrobial effects against Fusarium solani Botrytis cinerea, Pencillium crustosum, Erwinia carotovora, Phoma destructiva and Alternaria radicina causing the postharvest decay of fruits and vegetables. We have examined that HAAG could inhibit the growth of microorganims when treated with more than 500 $\mu$g/mL concentration. The activities of HAAG were stable in the wide spectrum of pH and temperature. Direct visualization of microbial cells by using scanning electron microscope showed the loss of microbial cell membrane function, which was destroyed by treating with the dilute solutions of HAAG. We could confirm that HAAG be an antimicrobial agent for the preparation of antimicrobial packaging paper.
