The microstructure and dilatation for 0.15C steels were investigated to define the phase transformation during the quenching and partitioning (Q&P) process. For the one step Q&P dilatation, the isothermal martensite/bainite transformation occurred because the holding temperature was between $M_s$ and $M_f$. The isothermally transformed martensite/bainite and the athermally transformed martensite were produced by a loss of retained austenite. As the holding time increased, new martensite-start ($M_s$) temperature produced from the final quenching process decreased due to the carbon partitioning from the martensite to the retained austenite. This was the direct evidence of increment for the retained austenite stability. For the two step Q&P dilatation, the isothermal bainitic transformation occurred because the partitioning temperature was larger than the $M_s$ and new $M_s$. The partitioning at $400^{\circ}C$ indicated the short incubation period for the bainite transformation than the $350^{\circ}C$ partitioning because the partitioning at $400^{\circ}C$ should acquire the larger thermal driving force for carbon partitioning than the $350^{\circ}C$ partitioning. A quick drop of $M_s$ and short period of bainite incubation for the $400^{\circ}C$ partitioning steel were also the direct evidence of significant effects of carbon partitioning on the stability of retained austenite.
Vacuum heat treatment(indirect heating method) has long exposure time at high temperature and low quenching rate. Contrarily salt bath heat treatment (direct heating method) has short exposure time at high temperature and fast cooling rate. With these different features of processes, mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength and impact strength of products show very different results. In this study, Salt bath heat treated products showed higher tensile strength and impact strength than vacuum heat treated products but hardness was not much different. These lower mechanical properties of vacuum heat treated products are due to differences in heat process and secondary hardening with high temperature tempering process. Consequently, It indicates that salt bath heat treatment is better way than vacuum heat treatment for product to have high mechanical properties.

InP quantum dot (QD) - organosilicon nanocomposites were synthesized and their photoluminescence quenching was mainly investigated because of their applicability to white LEDs (light emitting diodes). The as-synthesized InP QDs which were capped with myristic acid (MA) were incompatible with typical silicone encapsulants. Post ligand exchange the MA with a new ligand, 3-aminopropyldimethylsilane (APDMS), resulted in soluble InP QDs bearing Si-H groups on their surface (InP-APDMS) which allow embedding the QDs into vinyl-functionalized silicones through direct chemical bonding, overcoming the phase separation problem. However, the ligand exchange from MA to APDMS caused a significant decrease in the photoluminescent efficiency which is interpreted by ligand induced surface corrosion relying on theoretical calculations. The InP-APDMS QDs were cross-linked by 1,4-divinyltetramethylsilylethane (DVMSE) molecules via hydrosilylation reaction. As the InP-organosilicon nanocomposite grew, its UV-vis absorbance was increased and at the same time, the PL spectrum was red-shifted and, very interestingly, the PL was quenched gradually. Three PL quenching mechanisms are regarded as strong candidates for the PL quenching of the QD nano-composites, namely the scattering effect, Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and cross-linker tension preventing the QD's surface relaxation.
This study deals with effects of heat-treatment on the fatigue strength of SNC815 spur gears. The test gears are heat-treated by two different treatments. After carburization, one group of the test gears is quenched directly, while the other group is fumace cooled, reheated then quenched. The fatigue test at a constant stress amplitude is performed by using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled pulsating tester. The S-N curves are obtained and illustrated. By comparing the estimated strength with the experimental results, the validity of the previous experimental formula, presented by the author for estimating the fatigue strength of carburized gears, was discussed on these tested gears.

InP quantum dot (QD)-organosilicon nanocomposites were synthesized and their photoluminescence quenching was mainly investigated because of their applicability to white LEDs (light emitting diodes). The as-synthesized InP QDs are capped with myristic acid (MA), which are incompatible with typical silicone encapsulants. We have introduced a new ligand, 3-aminopropyldimethylsilane (APDMS), which enables embedding the QDs into vinyl-functionalized silicones through direct chemical bonding. The exchange of ligand from MA to APDMS does not significantly affect the UV absorbance of the InP QDs, but quenches the PL to about 10% of its original value with the relative increase in surface related emission intensities, which is explained by stronger coordination of the APDMS ligands to the surface indium atoms. InP QD-organosilicon nanocomposites were synthesized by connecting the QDs using a short cross-linker such as 1,4-divinyltetramethylsilylethane (DVMSE) by the hydrosilylation reaction. The formation and changes in the optical properties of the InP QD-organosilicon nanocomposite were monitored by ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) absorbance and steady state photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. As the hydrosilylation reaction proceeds, the QD-organosilicon nanocomposite is formed and grows in size, causing an increase in the UV-vis absorbance due to the scattering effect. At the same time, the PL spectrum is red-shifted and, very interestingly, the PL is quenched gradually. Three PL quenching mechanisms are regarded as strong candidates for the PL quenching of the QD nanocomposites, namely the scattering effect, F$\ddot{o}$rster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and cross-linker tension preventing the QD's surface relaxation.
The inhibitory effects of mercury ions on the growth of barley seedlings were studied and the distribution of metal elements in the organs of treated plants was investigated by using synchrotron radiation induced X-ray emission (SRIXE). Although the treatment of mercury ions caused growth inhibition, the mercury-specific increase in variable fluorescence and the abolishment of energy-dependent quenching in broken barley chloroplasts as shown by Moon et at. (1992) were not observed in the leaves of growth-inhibited seedlings. Instead the treatment of mercury decreased Fmax and Fo values. However, Fmax/Fo ratio and photochemical and nonphotochemical quenching coefficients were not affected significantly. By SRIXE analysis of $10\mu\textrm{m}$ mercury chloride treated seedlings, accumulation of mercury in roots was observed after 1 hour of treatment and similar concentration was sustained for 48 hours. Relative contents of mercury was high in roots and underground nodes where seeds were attachedl but was very low in leaves. Iron and zinc were also distributed mainly in the lower parts of the seedlings. However after 72 hours of treatment the contents of these metals in roots decreased and their distribution became more uniform, which may lead to death of the plants. These results suggest that the observed inhibitory effects on barley seedlings upto 48 hours after the treatment is not due to direct damages in the photosynthetic apparatus, but due to its accumulation in roots and the consequent retardation of the growth of barley seedlings. The decrease in Fmax and Fo is probably due to the decrease in chlorophyll and protein contents caused by the retardation of growth. The observed slow expansion of primary leaves could be also explained by the retardation of growth, but the fluorescence induction pattern from the leaves did not show characteristic symptoms of leaves under water stress.

The direct injection stratified charge(DISC) engine enhances the fuel tolerance and the antiknock tendency. This enhanc3d antiknock tendency allows use of a higher compression ratio which results in higher thermal efficiency. But its actual utilization is prevented by high emission combustion time and wall quenching will be the main causes of increasing unburned hydrocarbons in DISC system. In order to solve this problem, small aount of hydrogen was added to the charging air or injected fuel. The effects of hydrogen addition were examined experimentally by radial fuel injection using a pancake-type constant volume bomb. In case of the hydrogen addition to the charge of air, the combustion the amount of hydrogen. In case of the hydrogen addition to the fuel, the combustion pressure was significantly increased.
The direct calculation method is generalized to the excited-state diffusion-influenced reversible reaction of a neutral and a charged particle under an external field with two different lifetimes and quenching in three dimensions. The present method provides an alternative way to calculate the binding probability density functions and the survival probabilities from the corresponding irreversible results. The solutions are obtained as the series solutions by the diagonal approximation due to the anisotropy of the unidirectional external field. The numerical results are found to be in good agreement with those of the previous study [S. Y. Reigh et al. J. Chem. Phys. 132, 164112 (2010)] within a weak field limit. The solutions of two approaches show qualitatively the same overall behavior including the power laws at long times.
Nowadays, one of the serious problems in KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Co-Operation) system is the more higher fault current than the SCC(Short Circuit Capacity) of circuit breaker. There are many alternatives to reduce the increased fault current such as isolations of bus ties, enhancement of SCC of circuit breaker, applications of HVDC-BTB(High Voltage Direct Current-Back to Back) and FCL(fault current limiter). But, these alternatives have some drawbacks in viewpoints of system stability and cost. As the superconductivity technology has been developed, the HTS-FCL(High Temperature Superconductor -Fault Current Limiter) can be one of the attractive alternatives to solve the fault current problem. Under this background, this paper presents the EMTDC(Electro-Magnetic Transient Direct Current) model for resistance type HTS-FCL considering the nonlinear characteristic of final resistance value when quenching phenomena occur.
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a major pathogen that causes human pneumonia, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. S. aureus coagulase (Coa) triggers the polymerization of fibrin by activating host prothrombin, which then converts fibrinogen to fibrin and contributes to S. aureus pathogenesis and persistent infection. In our research, we demonstrate that isovitexin, an active traditional Chinese medicine component, can inhibit the coagulase activity of Coa but does not interfere with the growth of S. aureus. Furthermore, we show through thermal shift and fluorescence quenching assays that isovitexin directly binds to Coa. Dynamic simulation and structure-activity relationship analyses suggest that V191 and P268 are key amino acid residues responsible for the binding of isovitexin to Coa. Taken together, these data indicate that isovitexin is a direct Coa inhibitor and a promising candidate for drug development against S. aureus infection.
