Applications of the Trefftz boundary element method (BEM) to anti-plane electroelastic problems are presented in this paper. Both direct and indirect methods with domain decomposition are discussed in details. Each crack is treated as semi-infinite thin slit defined in a subregion, for which a particular solution of the anti-plane problem, satisfying exactly the crack-face condition, is derived. The stress intensity factors defined at each crack tip can be directly computed from the coefficients of the particular solution. The performance of the proposed formulation is assessed by two examples and comparison is made with results obtained by other approaches. The Trefftz boundary element approach is demonstrated to be suitable for the analysis of the anti-plane problem of piezoelectric materials.
The behavior of a jointed rock mass depends mainly on the geometrical and mechanical properties of joints. The failure mode of a rock mass and kinematics of rock blocks are governed by the orientation, spacing, and persistence of joints. The mechanical properties such as dilation angle, shear strength, maximum closure, strength of asperities and friction coeffiient play important roles on the stability and deformation of the rock mass. The normal and shear behaviour of a joint are coupled due to dilation, and the joint deformation depends also on the boundary conditions such as stiffness conditons. In this paper, the joint constitutive law including the dilatant behaviour of a joint is numerically modelled using the edge-to-edge contact logic in distinct element method. Also, presented is the method to quantify the input parameters used in the joint law. The results from uniaxial compression and direct shear tests using the numeical model of the single joint were compared to the analytic results from them. The boundary effect on the behaviour of a joint is verified by comparing the results of direct shear test under constant stress boundary condition with those under constant stiffness boundary condition. The numerical model developed is applied to a complex jointed rock mass to examine its performance and to evaluate the effect of joint dilation on tunnel stability.

This paper treats the optimization of rotor construction in the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electric vehicle (EV). While the field system of PMSM has generally one magnet per pole, we replace the magnet into plural sub-magnets. The dimensions of each sub-magnet are determined by the concept of pulse width modulation (PWM). By adopting the proposed rotor construction, we can not only reduce the space harmonics of the air-gap field but also provide space for rotor bars (i.e., damper windings) around the direct-axis. From the investigation by hybrid EE-BE (coupled finite element and boundary element) method coupled with both electric circuit and motion equation, we verify that the construction is effective for practical use.
A reflected breakwater can be affected by wave pressure and power because it is to be concentrated by wave energy. The present study is to estimate hydraulic behavior affecting around a reflected breakwater, which is discontinuity cases and various angle of coner at the breakwater. The numerical model to investigate wave diffraction, which is important hydraulic factor in the ocean, is performed by using direct boundary element method. The present numerical results are compared with the solutions of approximate and absolute based on an eigenfunction, and the solution of analytical by Fresnel integral. The results of the present numerical simulation agreed well with those of the published numerical and analytical data. As a result of this study, wave height is high at the comer of breakwater, and it is to be high if angle of conner at the reflected breakwater is small.

This paper shows how boundary element method can be used to calculate torsion geometrical stiffness of cross-sections of various beams and airfoil profiles. Using the BEM direct formulation, the technique for determining bending and torsional geometrical characteristics of arbitrary multiply connected cross-sections is presented. The application limits of several well-known formulae on some test problems have been demonstrated and discused.

A directly coupled Boundary Element and Finite Element Model was applied to the dynamic analysis of a coupled acoustic silencer with vibratory wall. In this cupled BEM-FEM muffler model, the BEM model was used to discretize the acoustic cavity and the FEM model was used to discretize the vibratory wall structure. Then the BEM model was coupled with the FEM model. The results of the coupled BEM-FEM model for the dynamic analysis of the simple expansion type reactive muffler configurations with flexible walls were verified by comparing the predicted results to analytical solutions. In order to investigate the effects of the muffler's structural flexibility on its transmission loss(TL) characteristics, the results of the coupled BEM-FEM model in conjunction with the four-pole parameter theory were utilized. The muffler's TL characteristics using the BEM-FEM coupled model with flexible walls as compared to other muffler configurations was studied. Finally the muffler's TL values with respect to different wall's thickness are predicted and compared.
A finite element approximation of a fourth-order nonlinear boundary value problem is given. In the direct implementation, a nonlinear system will be obtained and also a full size matrix will be introduced when Newton’s method is adopted to solve the system. To avoid this difficulty we introduce an iterative scheme which can be shown to converge the positive solution of the system lying between 0 and $sin{\pi}x$.

The direct and indirect PFBEM(power flow boundary element method) for the treatment of the 3 dimensional multi-domain problems are proposed to predict the acoustic energy density in medium to high frequency ranges. In the proposed method, the equation is derived in a matrix form by considering coupled relationships of the power flow at the interface of given domains. The proposed method can successfully obtain the analytical solutions for the problems of coupled cubes and the small-scale reverberant chamber. Then the experiment is carried out to obtain STL(sound transmission loss) by using small-scale reverberant chamber and the results are compared with analysis results.

A systematic procedure for designing a direct-radiator-type loudspeaker has been developed, based on a numerical vibro-acoustic analysis and the Taguchi method. The finite-element model of the speaker cone has been used to calculate the vibration response of the cone excited by the voice coil. The vibration response of the speaker cone has been used as a boundary condition for the acoustic analysis, and the acoustic frequency characteristics of the loudspeaker have been calculated by the boundary element method. The numerical model has been confirmed by comparing the numerical results with experimental ones obtained in an anechoic chamber. Some design parameters contributing dominantly to the acoustic characteristics have been selected by using the Taguchi method, and the variations of the acoustic characteristics due to the changes of the parameter values have been examined using the numerical model.

The underground structure, which has infinite or semi-infinite boundary conditions, is subjected by body forces and in-situ stresses. It also has stress concentration, which causes material nonlinear behavior, in the vicinity of the excavated surface. In this paper, some methods which can be used to transform domain integrals into boundary integrals are reviewed in order to analyze the effect of the body forces and the in-situ stresses. First, the domain integral of the body force is transformed into boundary integral by using the Galerkin tensor and divergence theorem. Second, it is transformed by writing the domain integral in cylindrical coordinates and using direct integration. The domain integral of the in-situ stress is transformed into boundary integral applying the direct integral method in cylindrical coordinates. The methodology is verified by comparing the results from the boundary element analysis with those of the finite element analysis. Coupling the above boundary elements with finite elements, the nonlinear behavior that occurs locally in the vicinity of the excavation is analyzed and the results are verified. Thus, it is concluded that the domain integrals of body forces and in-situ stresses could be performed effectively by transforming them into the boundary integrals, and the nonlinear behavior can be reasonably analyzed by coupled nonlinear finite element and boundary element method. The result of this research is expected to he used for the analysis of the underground structures in the effective manner.
