We demonstrate that the finite rate of dielectric relaxation in liquid crystals which has been ignored previously causes profound effects in the fast dielectric reorientation of the director. The phenomenon is relevant for submillisecond switching of the director when the switching rate approaches the rate of dielectric relaxation through the reorientation of the molecular dipoles. A submillisecond switching ($15-400\;{\mu}s$ for an optical retardation shift $0.3-2.2\;{\mu}m$ in $10-15\;{\mu}m$ thick cells) is demonstrated for dual frequency nematic cells with high pretilt that maximizes the dielectric torque acting on the director. We propose the theory of dielectric response in which the electric displacement depends not only on the present (as in the standard theory) but also on the past values of electric field and director. We design an experiment in which the standard "instantaneous" model and our model predict effects of opposite signs; the experimental data support the latter model.
Effects of MgO or $R_2O_3$(R:Dy, Ho, Yb) on the capacitance aging behavior of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) based on $BaTiO_3$ dielectrics under DC electrical fields has been studied. At a DC field of 1 $V{/\mu}m$, the capacitance of MLCC specimens dropped immediately in a very short period (<10 s, the first stage) and then decreased continuously with time (the second stage). Mn doping significantly increased the aging rate in the second stage. The addition of MgO or $R_2O_3$ notably decreased the second stage aging rate of Mn-doped specimens. Yb doping gives rise to the lowest aging rate in the second stage, which is due to the larger population of defect dipoles associated with oxygen vacancies.
In this paper the change of electrical properties of transformer oil due to electron beam irradiation is investigated. The specimens are produced with a some different dose of 0.5[Mrad], 1[Mrad] and 2[Mard] except for original specimen. The physical properties of each specimen is analyzed by using the FT-IR spectrum. So it is confirmed that carbonyl groups are increased according to the increase of electron beam dose and also that the nitric compounds are disappeared. The magnitude of dielectric dissipation factor appears maximum value by the contribution of dipoles and ions in the low temperature low voltage region and it is stable due to the saturation of carriers in the high temperature high voltage region in the electric conduction characteristics. Volume resistivity is also measured one of original specimen is larger than irradiated specimen.
In a Guest-Host cell the orientational ordering of dyes doped into liquid crystals has been investigated. To evaluate the influence of the host liquid crystals on the ordering of the dyes we have measured precisely the ordering parameters of the liquid crystals by using the dichroic ratio of the absorbances for infrared light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the diector. Our experimental results show that the ordering of the dyes can be expressed as a function of not only the molecular structure of the dyes but also the order parameter of the liquid crystals. These functions are dependent on the kinds of the liquid crystals and the dyes. Particularly the combination such as anthraquinone dyes doped into cyanobiphenyl liquid crystals show a very high ordering parameter. This is considered due to a strong intermolecular interaction between the dipoles of both liquid crystals and dyes.

A potential-based panel method is presented for the analysis of a partially-cavltatlng two-dimensional hydrofoil. The method employs normal dipoles and sources distributed on the foil and cavity surfaces. It is shown that the source plays an Important role in positioning the cavity surface through an iterative process. The cavity closure consition is found very effective in generating the cavity shape. Upon convergence, the method predicts the cavitation nurser, together with the lift, the drag and the surface pressure distribution, for a given cavity length. Systematic convergence tests shows that the present numerical method is fast and stable. The present computations show a good agreement with the previously computed and measured results.
Graphene is expected to have a significant impact in various fields in the foreseeable future. For example, graphene is considered to be a promising candidate to replace indium tin oxide (ITO) as transparent conductive electrodes in optoelectronics applications. We report the tunability of the wavelength of localized surface plasmon resonance by varying the distance between graphene and Au nanoparticles [1]. It is estimated that every nanometer of change in the distance between graphene and the nanoparticles corresponds to a resonance wavelength shift of ~12 nm. The nanoparticle-graphene separation changes the coupling strength of the electromagnetic field of the excited plasmons in the nanoparticles and the antiparallel image dipoles in graphene. We also show a hysteresis in the conductance and capacitance can serve as a platform for graphene memory devices. We report the hysteresis in capacitance-voltage measurements on top gated bilayer graphene which provide a direct experimental evidence of the existence of charge traps as the cause for the hysteresis [2]. By applying a back gate bias to tune the Fermi level, an opposite sequence of switching with the different charge carriers, holes and electrons, is found [3]. The charging and discharging effect is proposed to explain this ambipolar bistable hysteretic switching.
A systematic way of determining the equilibrium orientation of carbon monoxide (CO) in heme proteins using time-resolved polarized mid-IR spectroscopy is presented. The polarization anisotropy at pump-probe delay time of zero in the limit of zero photolysis and the angular distrbution function of CO are required to obtain the equilibrium orientation of CO. An approach is developed for determining the polarization anisotropy in the zero-photolysis limit from the anisotropy measured under finite photolysis conditions in an optically thick sample where the fraction of molecules photolyzed decreased as the pump pulse passes through and is absorbed by the sample. This approach is verified by measuring the polarization anisotropy of CO of carbonmonoxy myoglobin at various levels of photolysis. This method can be readily applied to other photoselection experiments determining precise angle between transition dipoles.
In this paper, we presented experimental data of the strength of the electro-magnetic waves in the engine room of automobiles. Measured frequency ranges are $145{\sim}380MHz$ and $844{\sim}1044MHz$. Experimental studies are conducted by measuring the radiated power of the frequency spectrum for above frequency bands. The $\lambda/2$ dipoles used for measurement are fabricated to comply with the COMMISSION DIRECTIVE 95/54EC. Experimental results confirm that the level of radiated power in the engine room at idling rpm is about 3dB higher than that of 1500rpm.
The wettabilities of the partially fluorinated polymers (ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer (ETFE), ethylenechlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer (ECTFE), and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)) were investigated by contact angle measurements. Zisman plots for ETFE and ECTFE exhibited linear relationships, while the Zisman plot for PVDF showed a slight curvature, which was interpreted to indicate strong non-dispersive interactions between the surface and the contacting liquids. The Lifshitz-van der Waals forces of the fluoropolymers were estimated to increase in the order of ETFE < PVDF $\ll$ ECTFE. An evaluation of the polar or "acid-base" interaction energies showed that PVDF, which possesses the most acidic hydrogens among the examined fluoropolymers, has the strongest acid-base interactions.

In this paper, a planar directional beam-switchable antenna with four orthogonal beam directions is proposed. The proposed antenna is designed with two crossed active elements and two parasitic elements for each direction. The design methodology is described on the basis of the Yagi-Uda method for the active and parasitic elements, respectively. By adjusting the effective electric lengths of the parasitic elements, the roles of a director and a reflector are exchanged with each other. The planar four-way beam-switchable Yagi-Uda antenna is implemented. From the experimental results. The proposed design method is verified for orthogonal radiation beam switching.
