  • The electrical resistivity prospecting method with dipole-dipole array were applied in order to survey 3-D structure characteristics of the Noen landfill site. For the electrical resistivity prospecting, 3 line of measurements were established parallel to the main boundary of the Noen landfill site and additional 2 lines were also established perpendicular to the existing 3 lines for the effective investigation of the landfill site. The results showed that the uppermost layer of the landfill site is believed to be stabilized generally based on the characteristics of electrical resistivity distribution. Lowest layer was partially polluted by the leachate.

  • The validity and efficiency of the roll-along technique widely used in 2-D electrical resistivity survey are analyzed in case of the dipole-dipole and the Wenner-Schlumberger arrays by numerical modelling. The shallow anomalous resistivity bodies are successfully inverted both in the dipole-dipole and in the Wenner-Schlumberger arrays because the shallow data of pseudosection are not omitted by the roll-along technique. However, the deep anomalous resistivity bodies can not be well resolved due to the skip of observed data which is more significant in the Wenner-Schlumberger array having relatively poor horizontal coverage of obtaining data. Carrying out electrical survey adopting the dipole-dipole array, the skip of data is insignificant because it is unfeasible to expand the electrodes to the maximum electrode separation coefficient($n_max$) owing to low S/N ratio. In case of the Wenner-Schlumberger array, however, because it is generally feasible to expand the electrodes $n_max$ to the owing to high S/N ratio, it is highly possible that skip of data from the roll-along technique causes significant distortion of inversion results. Therefore, adopting the Wenner-Schlumberger array having deeper median depth(Edwards, 1977) than do the dipole-dipole array on condition of the same unit electrode spacing( ($a$) ) and $n_max$, it is recommended to determine $a$ based on not $n_max$but $n_prob$free from the skip of observing data and forward electrodes with keeping overlap interval 3/4 of the survey line length in order to reduce the distortion of resistivity structure and perform resistivity survey efficiently. These results are confirmed by numerical modelling.

  • Although faults can be found by geological surveys, the surface traces of faults are not easily discovered by traditional geological surveys due to alluvia. In and around faults and fracture zones, the electrical resistivity appears to be lower than that of the surroundings due to the content of groundwater and clay minerals. Therefore, electrical resistivity surveys are effective to search buried faults and fracture zones. The dipole-dipole array electrical resistivity surveys, which could show the two dimensional subsurface electrical resistivity structure, were carried out in two areas, Yongdang-ri, Woongsang-eup, Yangsan-si, Kyungsangnam-do and Malbang-ri, Woedong-eup, Kyungju-si, Kyungsangpook-do. The one was next to the Dongrae Fault and the other near the Ulsan Fault was close to the region in which debatable quaternary fault traces had been found recently. From each measured data set, the electrical resistivity cross-section was obtained using the inversion program the reliability of which was analyzed using analytic solutions. A low resistivity zone was found in the inverted cross-section from the Yongdang-ri area survey data, and two low resistivity zones were found in that from the Malbang-ri area survey data. They were almost vertical and were 15∼20 m wide. Accounting the shape and the very low resistivity values of those zones (<100 Ωm)in the inverted section, they were interpreted as fracture zones although they should be proven by trenching. The reliability of the interpretation might be improved by adding some more parallel resistivity survey lines and interpreting the results in 3 and/or adding other geophysical survey.

  • The water leakage of reservoir embankment usually occurs around channelling pipes, which gives little influence on the embankment in a normal state. However, the embankment can be destroyed when the water level of reservoir increases with heavy rain and the rainy season in summer. Investigating the water vein and its path is therefore very important from the viewpoint of disaster prevention and embankment maintenance. The water leakage in dams and levees where the channelling pipes are working as weak zone was analyzed by using both numerical simulation and experimental method in this study. To detect the water leakage, an electrical resistivity survey was used and investigated for its' usability. The numerical results show the size and location of weak zone increases the importance of selection of electrode spacing. The leakage experiments of model embankment present the best result is obtained under the conditions of electrode spacing of 0.3m and dipole-dipole array. By studying the water leakage in dams and levees, the electrical resistivity survey is observed it is a very useful method to predict the leakage.

  • Five kinds of modified electrode arrays were proposed to overcome the weak points of the commonly used arrays using dipole and/or pole in two-dimensional resistivity surveys. The modified pole-pole array was suggested to overcome the inefficiency caused by distant earthing in pole-pole array. Four kinds of modified arrays using dipole were designed to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the conventional dipole-dipole and pole-dipole arrays through boosting up the measured potential difference. In the numerical experiments using the two-dimensional modeling and inversion, the effects of the ambient electrical noise and the resolving power were examined and the results showed the validity of the modified arrays proposed in this study.

  • Electrical resistivity survey has been conducted for delineating geological fault structure in Kaekok-ri near Kyungju. In general, electrical resistivity survey has an advantage of searching buried faults and its traces compared with other geophysical survey methods. Distribution of electrical conductivity in the ground is influenced by the ratio of pores, groundwater and clay minerals. These properties are evidenced indirectly to explain for weathering condition, faults and fracture Bones. Thus the electrical resistivity survey can be an effective method to find buried faults. We have carried out two dimensional (2-D) interpretation by means of smoothness-constrained least-squares and finite element method. Field data used in this paper was acquired at Kaekok-ri, Wuedong-eup, Kyungju-si, where is Ulsan Fault and is close to the region in which debatable quaternary fault traces were found recently. The dipole-dipole array resistivity survey which could show the 2-D subsurface electrical resistivity structure, was carried out in the area with three lines. The results showed good property of fault, fracture zone and fault traces which we estimated were congruous with the results. Through this study, 2-D electrical resistivity survey interpretation for fault is useful to apply.

  • The domestic and the industry wastes which mainly come out of human life activities have been usually processed mainly by the incineration method and/or the method of reclamation. The method of reclamation, specially open dumping, has caused significant environmental pollution problems on the local or regional soil and groundwater system by leachate. Therefore, to investigate the 3-D structure characteristics of environmental pollution area is one of the hot subjects. We applied dipole-dipole method of electrical resistivity survey to investigate 3-D environmental contamination characteristics of the Noeun landfill area. For electrical resistivity survey, the line for measurements was established parallel to the main boundary of the Noeun landfill, for effective investigation of the whole landfill area. The result shows that the uppermost layer of the Noeun landfill is believed to be stabilized completely, based on the result of electrical resistivity values. However, the lowest layer of the Noeun landfill was partially polluted by leachate. Therefore, the electrical resistivity survey method is believed to be the one of the most effective methods to investigate three-dimensional distribution of leachate occurred in the lower part of landfill area.

  • Recently shield TBM tunnellings are being applied to subway construction in Korean cities. Generally these kinds of tunnellings have the problems in the stability of ground such as subsidence because urban subway is constructed in the shallow depth. A sinkhole occurred on the road just above the tunnel during tunneling in Kwangju, so a survey for upper layer of the tunnel was needed. But conventional Ground Probing Radar can't be applicable due to the presence of steel-mesh screen in the shield segment, so no existent geophysical method is applicable in this site. Because the outer surface of each shield segment is electrically insulated, dipole-dipole resistivity method which is popular in engineering site investigation, was tried to this survey for the first time. Specially manufactured flexible ring-type electrodes were installed into the grouting holes at an interval of 2.4 m on the ceiling. The K-Ohm II system which has been developed by KIGAM and tested successfully in many sites, was used in this site. The system consists of 1000Volt-1Ampere constant-current transmitter, optically isolated 24 bit sigma-delta A/D conversion receiver - maximum 12 channel simultaneous measurements, and graphical automatic acquisition software for easy data quality check in real time. Borehole camera logging with circular white LED lighting was also done to investigate the state of the layer. Measured resistivity data lack of some stations due to failing opening lids of holes, shows general high-low trend well. The dipole-dipole resistivity inversion results discriminate (1) one approximately 4 meter diameter cavity (grouted but incompletely hardened, so low resistivity - less than $30{\Omega}m$), (2) weak zone (100-200${\Omega}m$), and (3) hard zone (high resistivity - more than 1000${\Omega}m$) very well for the distance of 320 meters. The 2-D inversion neglects slight absolute 3-D effect, but we can get satisfactory and useful information. Acquired resistivity section and video tapes by borehole camera logging will be reserved and reused if some problem occurs in this site in the future.

  • A geophysical and geochemical study was performed to verify the depth of landfill as well as the horizontal/vertical distribution of leachate at the landfill site located in Gongju. The electrical resistivity, with dipole-dipole array and dipole spacing of 5m, was applied along the nine survey lines and electromagnetic induction survey was conducted along the perimeter traverse surrounding the landfill. Cations, anions and stable isotope ($\delta$D and $\delta$$^{18}$ O) analyses were performed on about 63 water and leachate samples collected in dry and rainy seasons at 31 sites. The result of electromagnetic induction survey make it possible to derive the potential route of leachate in the past or present. The imaging of processed resistivity field data show that the possible route of leachate doesn't exist except the survey line 7. The weak zone traversing the landfill, however, is revealed by the electrical resistivity imaging, which may be the potential route of leachate toward the deep ground. The geochemical data agree well with geophysical data for deducing possible route of leachate of the site.
