  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate compatability of seismic source characteristics of the Kern County earthquake to those of Korean Peninsula seismotectonics. The compatability could be used to make Korean type response spectrum from the strong ground motions observed from the assingned earthquake. The July 21, 1952, Kern County, California, earthquake is the largest earthquake to occur in the western U.S. since 1906, and the repeat of this event poses a significant seismic hazard. The Kern County event was a complex thrusting event, with a surface rupture pattern that varied from pure leftlateral strike-slip to pure dip-slip. A time dependent moment tensor inversion was applied to ten observed teleseismic long-period body waves to investigate the source complexity. Since a conventional moment tensor inversion(constant geometry through time) returns a non-double-couple source when the seismic source changes(fault orientation and direction of slip) with time, we are required to use the time dependent moment tensor which allows a first-order mapping of the geometric and temporal complexity. From the moment tensor inversion, a two-point seismic source model with significant overlap for the White Wolf fault, which propagates upward(20 km to 5 km) from SW to NE, fits most of the observed seismic waveforms in the least squares sense. Comparison of P, T and B axes of focal mechanisms and focal depths suggests that seismic source characteristics of the Kern County earthquake is consistant with those of Korean Peninsula Seismotectonics.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop eco-printing method using natural dyes combined with chitosan treatment to impart various pattern effect on cotton fabric. It was examined whether tone-on-tone pattern effects could be produced by screen printing with chitosan paste and subsequently dip-dyed in natural dye bath. For polychromic colorants, fabrics were pre-mordanted and then screen printed with chitosan, while only chitosan printing treatment was applied for monochromic colorants. Color, dye uptake, washing, light and rubbing fastnesses of printed fabrics were measured in relation to the presence of chitosan printing. Pre-mordanting and chitosan printing treatment were applied to such polychromic colorants as madder, sappanwood, onion and cochineal. Also, printing pattern formation on fabrics was evaluated by differences in dye uptake and color. The results suggested that madder, onion and cochineal were effective on pattern formation. Regarding sappanwood, since dye uptake was increased only by pre-mordanting without chitosan printing treatment, there was little color difference and thus patterns were not clearly distinguished. Chitosan printing treatment tended to increase washing, light and rubbing fastnesses of dyed fabrics with polychromic colorants. Chitosan printing treatment was applied to monochromic colorants such as chlorophyll, gardenia and indigo and the effect of printing formation was examined according to the difference in dye uptake. Among monochromic dyes tried, chlorophyll was effective and chitosan printing improved washing and light fastnesses.

  • Kubong Gold Mine is located in Kuryongri, Sayang-myun, Chungyang-gun, Choongchung-Namdo.(latitude $36^{\circ}24^{\prime}N$. longitude $126^{\circ}45^{\prime}30^{{\prime}{\prime}}E$) The mine was begun to work soon after the inhabitants of this village had accidently discovered the outcrops in April 1908. It is one of the largest gold mines in Korea which produces 4,500 tons of crude ore a month. The geology in the area consists of granitic gneiss, banded gneiss, augen-gneiss, mica schist, limesilicate of Pre-Cambrian series and sedimentary rocks(sandstones & conglomerates) of Daedong series. Basic dikes intrude the former formations. The country rock of the ore deposit is a group of the metamorphic rocks mentioned above. Gold-silver bearing quartz vein contains small amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena and sphalerite in which gold and silver occur as native state. The vein strikes $N30^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}E$ and dips $20^{\circ}{\sim}50^{\circ}S$ and the average width of the vein is estimated 1 to 1.5m. Average grade of ore is Au:6~8gr/t and Ag:5~6gr/t. The ore shoot continues from the outcrop to the depth of -1760ML with dip of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}$ and strike extension reaches to 400m at the depth of -1440 ML and to more or less 200m at below. Highgrade of ore vein was found at the lowest level of the ore shoot at the time of recent field survey at the end of August 1970. Its average grade was estimated as Au:20gr/t and its width 1~2.5M in average. A series of futher prospecting for other new ore shoot or parallel veins are urgent and crosscut prospecting along the horizontal level is strongly recommended.

  • Geological survey on the occurrence of copper oxide in Suparaura area around Abancay in the south-central part of Peru had been carried out. Geology of the area is composed of granitoids such as granodiorite, tonalite and andesitic porphyry related to Tertiary igneous activity, Ferrobamba formation with Cretaceous limestone and sandstone in descending order. Red sandstone is widely distributed and emplaced with their attitude of $N70^{\circ}W$ strike and $60^{\circ}NE$ dip. Copper oxides were mineralized along the bedding plane of red sandstone with maximum width of 30 cm. Ore-body structure bounding red sandstone strata have different occurrence characteristics with generally known porphyry system in terms of alteration, mineral assemblage and occurrence mode. Therefore, it is thought to be stratiform sediment-hosted copper (SSC) deposits genetically corresponding to Mississippi-valley type from preliminary study.

  • Polyvinylchloride (PVC) thin films having a microporous structure could be prepared by using the solubility difference in solvents. PVC thin film with a water contact angle of $150^{\circ}$ or more was obtained from the PVC solution consisting of the mixture of tetrahydrofuran as a solvent and propanol as a non-solvent. In the drying process of dip-coated PVC film, the increase of drying temperature reduced the tendency of roughened surface, which led the decrease of surface hydrophobicity. As the addition of propanol in the solution with 1 wt% PVC increased, the uniformity of surface roughness was improved. In the case of oxygen plasma treatments, even though the surface structure of PVC thin film was not notably changed, the surface property of the film was changed from the super-hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity as a function of the plasma exposing time.

  • Purpose: This retrospective study was to determine the functional results of patients who were amputated of their fingertip between patients who were treated with replantation and patients who were treated with thenar flap. Materials and Methods: From 2004 to 2007, we identified and operated 159 patients who were diagnosed with fingertip amputations. Of 159 patients, Eighty-two patients were treated by replantation (67 in men and 14 in women) and the mean age at the operation was 41 years (range, 15-68 years). Seventy-nine patients was treated with thenar flap(54 in men and 25 in women) and the mean age at the operation was 43 years(range, 21-70 years). We compared variables between two groups including, age, gender, diagnosis, duration of hospital admission, grip strength, two-point discrimination, Semmes Weinstein monofilament test, active range of motion (ROM) of the proximal and distal interphalangeal (PIP and DIP) joint, pain (or tenderness), paresthesia, cold intolerance, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire, and finger for activities of daily living (ADLs). Results: The duration of admission was longer in Replantation group than in Thenar flap group(p=0.001). However, the grip strength (p=0.003) and Semmes Weinstein monofilament test (p=0.029) in the Replanation group were statistically superior to the Thenar flap group. The average DASH disability (p=0.003)/symptom score (p=0.007) and ADLs (p<0.001) in the Replantation group was statistically better. In addition, cold intoleranace test of Thenar flap group is worse than the Replantation group. Conclusion: This study demonstrate that fingertip replantation have demonstrated not only to obtain the best appearance but also to gain better functional outcome. However, it is impossible to perform replatation, the thenar flap can be limited alternative method for fingertip amputation in aspect of preservation of range of motion and hospitalization time.

  • The middle and lower reaches of the Kum River system become stagnant in dry seasons with florishing of phytoplankton. In this study primary productivity of phytoplankton were measured by the C-14 uptake method and the P-I model method at seven main stream sites of the Kum River from the Daechung Dam outet to the river mouth. Nutrients (TN, TP, DIP, TIN) concentrations were measured in the mainstream and tributaries and compared with the variation of assimilation number. The range of primary productivity was $40{\sim}4,558mgC{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ and it was higher than those of lentic ecosystems in Korea. Average TN and TP were $4.1mgN{\cdot}L^{-1}$, $70.6mgP{\cdot}m^{-3}$, respectively. Tributaries showed higher nutrient concentrations than the main stream. After two major tributaries merged with the discharging water of the Daechung Dam phyotplankton biomass and productivity increased drastically and remained at the similar eutrophic level through the downstream reach to the river mouth. Both dissolved phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations showed positive correlation with assimilation number of phytoplankton. In conclusion phytoplankton productivity is at the level of eutrophic water and it was higher than usual lentic habitats. Nutrient concentrations are critical factors in controlling productivity in the lower reach of the Kum River.

  • The aim of this paper is to prepare metal/ceramic composite ultrafiltration membranes by coating inorganic particles on a metallic hollow fiber filter. The diameter and the pore size of the filter was 2.0 mm and $2{\sim}8{\mu}m$. The metal/ceramic composite ultrafiltration membranes were obtained by a coating process of silica and titania sols on top of the metallic filter. For this purpose the method of fast freeze drying and dip-coating were used. It was found that the pore size of the membrane was about 50 nm from SEM and PMI characterization. The pore size was controlled by changing the size of the particles, sintering period and temperature.

  • Nano-porous ceramic membranes was synthesized by the sol-gel method. Gas permeation of hydrogen and nitrogen was determined by single composition gas. Pore size $0.1{\mu}m$ and porosity 32% of flat type ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ substrate was manufactured. An intermediate ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ layer with pore size of 4 nm was formed by dip-coating. Polymeric silica sol was synthesized by acid catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate. Supported membranes on alumina were prepared by dipping and calcining. He, $N_2$ permeation experiments with nanoporous sol-gel modified supported ceramic membranes were peformed to determine the gas transport characteristics. $He/N_2$ permselectivity around $100{\sim}160$ and helium permeation in the order of $10^{-7}mol/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$ were measured in the temperature range of $303{\sim}363K$.

  • Galvanized steel has gone through a chemical process to keep it from corroding. The steel gets coated in layers of zinc because rust will not attack this protective metal. For countless outdoor, marine, or industrial applications, galvanized steel is an essential fabrication component. The reduction of the corrosion rate of zinc is an important topic. In the past, a very popular way to reduce the corrosion rate of zinc was to use chemical conversion layers based on $Cr^{+6}$. However, a significant problem that has arisen is that the use of chromium salts is now restricted because of environmental protection legislation. Therefore, it is very important to develop new zinc surface treatments that are environmentally friendly to improve the corrosion resistance of zinc and adhesion with a final organic protective layer. In this study, a Urethane solution (only Urethane 20 wt.%; S-700) and an organic/inorganic solution with Si (Si polysilicate 10 wt.% + Urethane 10 wt.%; LRO-317) are used. Based on the salt spray test of 72 h, S-700 and LRO-317 had a superior effect for the corrosion resistance on EGI and HDGI, respectively.
