  • This paper describes interactive computer procedures for design the forming sequences in cold forging. This system is implemented on the personal computer and its environment is a commercial AutoCAD system. The programming language. AutoLISP, was used for the configuration of the system. Since the process of metal forming can be considered as a transformation of geometry, treatment of the geometry of the part is a key in process planning. To recognize the part section geometry, the section entity representation, the section coordinate-redius representation and the section primitive geometru were adopted. This system includes six major modules such as input module, forging design module, forming sequence design module, die design module, FEM verification module and output module which are used independently or in all. The sequence drawing wigh all dimensions, which includes the dimensional tolerances and the proper sequence of operations, can generate under the environment of AutoCAD. The acceptable forming sequences can be verified further, using the FE simulation.

  • This paper demonstrates the validity of spectral element analysis for modeling the high-frequency dynamic behaviors of a beam with a surface-bonded piezoelectric wafer through a laboratory test. In the spectral element analysis, the high-frequency electro-mechanical interaction can be considered properly with relatively low computational cost compared to the finite element analysis. In the verification test, a cantilever beam with a surface-bonded piezoelectric wafer is forced to be in steady-state motion by exerting the harmonic driving voltage signal on the piezoelectric wafer. A laser scanning vibrometer is used to obtain the overall dynamic responses of the structure such as resonance frequencies, the associated mode shapes, and frequency response functions up to 20 kHz. Then, these dynamic responses from the test are compared to those computed by the spectral element analysis. A two-dimensional finite analysis is conducted to obtain the asymptotic solutions for the comparison purpose as well.

  • The HANARO, a multi-purpose research reactor of 30 MWth open-tank-in-pool type, has been under normal operation since its initial criticality in February, 1995. Many experiments should be safely performed to activate the utilization of the HANARO. HANARO flow simulation facility is being developed for the endurance test of reactivity control units for extended life time and the verification of structural integrity of those experimental equipments prior to loading in the HANARO. This facility is composed of three major parts; a half-core structure assembly, a flow circulation system and a support system. The flow circulation system is composed of a circulation pump, a core flow piping, a core bypass flow piping and instruments. The system is to be filled with de-mineralized water and the flow should be met the design requirements to simulate a similar flow characteristics in the core channel of the half-core structure assembly to the HANARO. This paper, therefore, presents an analytical analysis to study the flow behavior of the system. Computational flow analysis has been performed for the verification of system pressure variation through the three-dimensional analysis program with the standard $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model and for the verification of the structural piping integrity through the finite element method. According to the analysis results, it could be said that the design requirements and the structural piping integrity of the flow circulation system are satisfied.

  • Fast and accurate new capacitance determination methodology for non-uniform complicated multi-layer VLSI interconnects is presented. Since a capacitance determination of intricate multi-layer interconnects using 3-dimensional field-solver is not practical, quasi-3-dimensional methodology is presented. Interconnects with discontinuity (i.e., bend structure and different spacing between lines, etc.) are partitioned. Then, each partial capacitance of divided parts is extracted by using 2-dimensional extraction methodology. For a multi-layer interconnects with shielding layer, the system can be simplified by investigating a distribution of charge in it. Thereby, quasi-3-dimensional capacitance for multi-layer interconnects can be determined by combining solid-ground based 2-dimensional capacitance and shielding effect which is independently determined with layout dimensions. This methodology for complicated multi-layer interconnects is more accurate and cost-efficient than conventional 3-dimensional methodology It is shown that the quasi-3-dimensional capacitance methodology has excellent agreement with 3-dimensional field- solver-based results within 5% error.

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction and experimental verification of the electromagnetic performance of a parallel magnetized surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) motor having a fractional number of slots per pole combination. On the basis of a two-dimensional (2-D) polar coordinate system and a magnetic vector potential, analytical solutions for flux density produced by the permanent magnets (PMs) and stator windings are derived. Then, analytical solutions for back-electromotive force (emf) and electromagnetic torque are derived from these field solutions. The analytical results are thoroughly validated with 2-D nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis results. Finally, the experimental back-emf and electromagnetic torque measurements are presented to test the validity of the analysis.

  • Z-map model is the most widely used model for NC simulation and verification. But it has several limitations to get a high precision, to apply 5 axis machining simulation. In this paper, we tried to use quadtree for searching cutting region. Quadtree representation of two dimensional objects is performed with a tree that describes the recursive subdivision. By using these quadtree model. storage requirements were reduced. And also, recursive subdivision was processed in the boundries, so, useless computation could be reduced, too. To get more high Accuracy, we applied the supersampling method in the boundaries. The Supersampling method is the most common form of the antialiasing and usually used with polygon mesh rendering in computer graphics To verify quadtree model we compared simulated results with z-map model and enhanced z-map model

  • Current CAD systems are good enough to be used as a tool to manipulate three-dimensional shapes. This is a very important capability to be owned by a design tool because a major portion of designers'activities is spent on the shape manipulation in the design detailing process. However, the whole design process involves a lot more than the, shape manipulation. Currently, these remaining tasks, mostly logical reasoning process for the function realization together with structure decomposition in the top-down manner, are processed in the designer's brain. To support the top-down functional design process of a mechanical product, a system integrating the functional, structural and geometrical aspects of a product design in a unified environment is presented. Using this system, a designer can perform function decomposition, structure decomposition, and geometry detailing, and function verification activities in parallel and the whole design process it modeled resultantly. Once the whole design process is modeled, any redesign task can be automatically performed with the verification of the desired functions.

  • The main focus of the current study is to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a cantilever retaining wall considering backfill and soil/foundation interaction effects. For this purpose, a three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) with viscous boundary is developed to investigate the seismic response of the cantilever wall. To demonstrate the validity of the FEM, analytical examinations are carried out by using modal analysis technique. The model verification is accomplished by comparing its predictions to results from analytical method with satisfactory agreement. The method is then employed to further investigate parametrically the effects of not only backfill but also soil/foundation interactions. By means of changing the soil properties, some comparisons are made on lateral displacements and stress responses. It is concluded that the lateral displacements and stresses in the wall are remarkably affected by backfill and subsoil interactions, and the dynamic behavior of the cantilever retaining wall is highly sensitive to mechanical properties of the soil material.

  • Two-dimensional flow analysis is a way to provide good estimates for complex flow features in flow around islands and obstructions, flow at confluence and flow in braided channel. One of difficult problems to develop a two-dimensional hydraulic model is to analyze dry and wet area in river channel. Dry/wet problem can be encountered in river and coastal engineering problems, such as flood propagation, dam break analysis, tidal processes and so on. The objective of this study is to develop an accurate and robust two-dimensional finite element method with dry/wet technique in complex natural rivers. The dry/wet technique with Deforming Grid Method was developed in this study. The Deforming Grid Method was used to construct new mesh by eliminating of dry nodes and elements. The eliminated nodes and elements were decided by considering of the rising/descending velocity of water surface elevation. Several numerical simulations were carried out to examine the performance of the Deforming Grid Method for the purpose of validation and verification of the model in rectangular and trapezoidal channel with partly dry side. The application results of the model were displayed reasonable flow distribution.

  • Photogrammetry is a non-direct 3-dimensional coordinate measurement technique using 2-dimensional photographic images. For reconstruction 3-dimensional data from the 2-dimensional photos, photogrammetry uses the fundamental principle of triangulation. Digital photogrammetry solve for the camera location and coordinates simultaneously through the mapping, scaling and bundle processing in software processing. In this paper, several applications for photogrammetry measurement are introduced, such as 'photogrammetric measurement of the gravity deformation of a cassegrain type antenna', 'analysis of photogrammetry data from ISIM mockup', 'underwater photogrammetric verification of nuclear fuel assemblies', 'spacecraft optical bench measurement' and 'spacecraft ground support equipment measurement'.
