  • Excessive vibrations induced by earthquake excitation and wind load are an obstacle in design and construction of tall and super tall buildings. An innovative vibration control structure system (Mega-Sub Controlled Structure System-MSCSS) was recently proposed to further improve humans comfort and their safeties during natural disasters. Preliminary investigations were performed using a two dimensional equivalent simplified model, composed by 3 mega-stories. In this paper, a more reasonable and realistic scaled model is design to investigate the dynamical characteristics and controlling performances of this structure when subjected to strong earthquake motion. The control parameters of the structure system, such as the modulated sub-structures disposition; the damping coefficient ratio (RC); the stiffness ratio (RD); the mass ratio of the mega-structure and sub-structure (RM) are investigated and their optimal values (matched values) are obtained. The MSCSS is also compared with the so-called Mega-Sub Structure (MSS) regarding their displacement and acceleration responses when subjected to the same load conditions. Through the nonlinear time history analysis, the effectiveness and the feasibility of the proposed mega-sub controlled structure system (MSCSS) is demonstrated in reducing the displacement and acceleration responses and also improving human comfort under earthquake loads.

  • Submicron-sized polymeric colloidal particles can self assemble into 3-dimensional (3D) opal structure which is a useful template for photonic crystal. Narrowly dispersed polymer microspheres can be synthesized by emulsion polymerization in water using water-soluble radical initiator. In this report, we demonstrate a facile and reproducible emulsion polymerization method to prepare various polymeric microspheres within 200 - 400 nm size ranges which can be utilized as colloidal photonic crystal template. By controlling the amount of monomer and surfactant, monodisperse polymer colloids of polystyrene (PS) and acrylates with various sizes were successfully prepared without complicated synthetic procedures. Such polymer colloids self-assembled into 3D opal structure exhibiting bright colors by reflection of visible light. The colloidal particles and the resulting opal structures were rigorously characterized, and the wavelength of the structural color from the colloidal crystal was confirmed to have quantitative relationship with the size of constituting colloidal particles as predicted by Bragg equation. The tunability of the structural color was achieved not only by varying the particle size but also by infiltration of the colloidal crystal with liquids having different refractive indices.

  • This paper describes a seismic analysis of chemical pump using automated mesh generation system. The use of an automated analysis system, involving FE codes together with CAD systems and FE pre- and post-processors, has provided an important step towards shortening the design process and structural optimization. The FE model, which is a FE mesh accompanied with the analysis condition, is automatically converted from the analysis model. The FE models are then automatically analyzed using the FE analysis code. This integrated FE simulation system is applied to an analysis of three-dimensional complex solid structures such as a chemical pump.

  • In this work, static characteristics of 4H-SiC SJ-ACCUFETs were obtained by adjusting the p-pillar region. The structure of this SJ-ACCUFET was designed by using a two-dimensional simulator. The static characteristics of SJ-ACCUFET, such as the breakdown voltages, on-resistance, and figure of merits, were obtained by varying the p-pillar doping concentration from $1{\times}10^{15}cm^{-3}$ to $5{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$ and the thickness from $0{\mu}m$ to $9{\mu}m$. The doping concentration and the thickness of p-pillar region are closely related to the break down voltage and on-resistance and threshold voltages. Hence a silicon carbide SJ-ACCUFET structure with highly intensified breakdown voltages and low on-resistances with good figure of merits can be achieved by optimizing the p-pillar thickness and doping concentration.

  • The effect of nearby cohesionless sloping ground on the uplift capacity of horizontal strip plate anchor embedded in sand deposit with horizontal ground surface has been studied numerically. The numerical analysis has been carried out by using the lower bound theorem of limit analysis with finite elements and linear optimization. The results have been presented in the form of non-dimensional uplift capacity factor of anchor plate by changing its distance from the slope crest for different slope angles, embedment ratios and angles of soil internal friction. It has been found that the decrease in horizontal distance between the edge of the anchor plate and the slope crest causes a continuous decrease in uplift capacity of anchor plate. The optimum distance is that distance between slope crest and anchor plate below which uplift capacity of an anchor plate has been found to decrease with a decrease in normalized crest distance from the anchor plate in presence of nearby sloping ground. The normalized optimum distance between the slope crest and the anchor plate has been found to increase with an increase in slope angle, embedment ratio and soil internal friction angle.

  • A contact strip shape of a high speed train pantograph system was optimized with CFD to increase the aerodynamic performance and stability of contact force, and the results were validated by a wind tunnel test. For design of the optimal contact strip shape, a Kriging model and genetic algorithm were used to ensure the global search of the optimal point and reduce the computational cost. To enhance the performance and robustness of the contact strip for high speed pantograph, the drag coefficient and the fluctuation of the lift coefficient along the angle of attack were selected as design objectives. Aerodynamic forces were measured by a load cell and HWA (Hot Wire Anemometer) was used to measure the Strouhal number of wake flow. PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was adopted to visualize the flow fields. The optimized contact strip shape was shown a lower drag with smaller fluctuation of vertical lift force than the general shaped contact strip. And the acoustic noise source strength of the optimized contact strip was also reduced. Finally, the reduction amount of drag and noise was assessed when the optimized contact strip was applied to three dimensional pantograph system.

  • Pose estimation is an important operation for many vision tasks. This paper presents a method of estimating the camera pose, using a known landmark for the purpose of autonomous vertical takeoff and landing(VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) landing. The proposed method uses a distinctive methodology to solve the pose estimation problem. We propose to combine extrinsic parameters from known and unknown 3-D(three-dimensional) feature points, and inertial estimation of camera 6-DOF(Degree Of Freedom) into one linear inhomogeneous equation. This allows us to use singular value decomposition(SVD) to neatly solve the given optimization problem. We present experimental results that demonstrate the ability of the proposed method to estimate camera 6DOF with the ease of implementation.

  • The high-ozone episode in the Greater Seoul Area for the period of July 27 to August 1 1997 was modeled by the CIT(California Institute of Technology) three-dimensional photochemical model. Emission data were prepared by scaling the NIER(1994) data through and optimization method using VOC measurements in August 1997 and EKMA(Empirical Kinetic Modeling Approach). Two sets of meteorological data were prepared by the diagnostic routine. a part of the CIT model : one only utilized observations from the surface weather stations and the other also utilized observations from the automatic weather stations that were more densely distributed than those from the surface weather stations. The results showed that utilizing observations from the automatic weather stations could represent fine variations in the sind field such as those caused by topography. A better wind field gave better peak ozones and a more reasonable spatial distribution of ozone concentrations. Nevertheless, there were still many differences between predictions and observations particularly for primary pollutant such as NOx and CO. This was probably due to the inaccuracy of emission data that could not resolve both temporal and spatial variations.

  • Recent developments of S.I. engine, aiming to higher power, better fuel economy, lower air pollution and better driveability, have much focused on the importance of the role of computer simulation in engine research and development. In this point of view, improving engine performance requires finding some means to improve volumetric efficiency. Up to now there have been several attempts to optimize the intake and exhaust system of internal system of S.I. engine by computer simulation. There appear to be few studies available, however, of such simulation & experimental studies applied to the optimization of exhaust manifold configuration. In this study, gas exchange & power process of 4 cylinder S.I. Engine was studies numerically & experimentally, and governing equation of a one-dimensional unsteady compressible flow and combustion process were respectively solved by a characteristics method and 2-zone model. The aim of this study is to predict and investigate the influence of pressure wave interaction at the exhaust systems on engine performance with widely differing exhaust manifold configuration.

  • This paper presents an analytical solution to predict the transient temperature distribution in fillet arc welding. The analytical solution is obtained by solving a transient three -dimensional heat conduction equation with convection boundary conditions on the surfaces of an infinite plate with finite thicknesses, and mapping an infinite plate onto the fillet weld geometry with energy equation. The electric arc heat input on fillet weld and on infinite plate is assumed to have a traveling bivariate Gaussian distribution. To check the validity of the solution, GTA and FCA welding experiments were performed under various welding conditions. The actual isotherms of the weldment cross - sections at various distances from the arc start point are compared with those of simulation result. As the result shows a satisfactory accuracy, this analytical solution can be used to predict the transient temperature distribution in the fiIIet weld of finite thickness under a moving bivariate Gaussian distributed heat source. The simplicity and short calculation time of the analytical solution provides rationales to use the analytical solution for modeling the welding control systems or for an optimization tool of welding process parameters.
