  • Primary frequency control(PFC) has the ability to regulate short period random variations of frequency during normal operation conditions and also to respond rapidly to emergencies. However, during the past decade, numerous significant sized blackouts occurred worldwide that resulted in serious economic losses. Therefore, the conclusion has been reached that the ability of the current PFC to meet an emergency is poor, and security of power systems should be improved. An alternative to enhance the PFC and thus security is to store excessive amounts of energy during off-peak load periods in efficient energy storage systems for substituting the primary control reserve. In this sense, superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES) in combination with a static synchronous compensator(STATCOM) is capable of supplying power systems with both active and reactive powers simultaneously and very rapidly, and thus is able to enhance the security dramatically. In this paper, a new concept of PFC based on incorporating a STATCOM-SMES is presented. A complete detailed model is proposed and a new control scheme is designed, comprising an enhanced frequency control scheme, and a fully decoupled current control strategy in d-q coordinates with a novel controller to prevent dc bus capacitors voltage drift/imbalance. The performance of the proposed control schemes is validated through digital simulation carried out using MATLAB/Simulink.

  • In this paper, a prototype of the auxiliary resonant commutated snubber circuit(ARCS) with a high frequency transformer power regeneration loop is described for voltage source type sinewave inverter system. This is a new soft switching topology developed for three phase voltage source soft-switching inverter, active power filter and reactive power compensator has significant advantage of current rating reduction for auxiliary active switching devices. In addition, this paper presents a novel prototype of voltage-source soft switching space vector-modulated inverter with ARCS mentioned above, which is more suitable and acceptable for high-power utility interactive power conditioning, along with a digital control scheme. The steady-state operating analysis of ARCS has the remarkable features and the practical design procedure of this resonant snubber are illustrated on the basis of computer simulation analysis. The operating performance evaluations in the steady-state of this three phase voltage source soft switching inverter are discussed and compared with the three phase voltage source hard switching inverter.

  • This paper applies a compensated low pass filter (LPF) to current measurements for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. The noise limits the bandwidth of current controllers and has more adverse influences on control performances under the light load condition because of the low signal-to-noise ratio. In order to eliminate the noise sensitivity, this paper proposes a digital LPF with a compensator of gain attenuation and phase delay which are unacceptable in current information for PMSM drives. Characteristics of the proposed LPF are analyzed in comparison with the general LPFs. The compensated LPF is basically designed by the orthogonal property of the measured currents in the ${\alpha}{\beta}$ stationary reference frame. In addition, an implementation issue of the proposed method is discussed. Experimental results using the proposed method show improvements of the current control performance from two perspectives, rapid step responses and reductions of harmonic distortion.

  • FACTS technology is developed into the sophisticated system technology which combines conventional power system technology with power electronics, micro-process control, and information technology. Its objectives are achieving enhancement of the power system flexibility and maximum utilization of the power transfer capability through improvements of the system reliability, controllability, and efficiency[1]. As a series and shunt compensator, UPFC consists of two inverters with common dc link capacitor bank. It controls the magnitude of shunt bus voltage and real and reactive power flow of transmission line[2]. In this paper, we present the design and control algorithm of UPFC simulator for KERI simulator. As a control algorithm is implemented by digital controller, we consider sample-and-hold of signals In this simulation, we use EMTDC/PSCAD V3.0 software which can simulate instantaneous voltage and current.

  • The focal plane image stabilization for a camera is one of the most effective method that can increases the digital camera's image quality by compensating the vibration disturbance. The optical image stabilization can be implemented by making the focal plane to trace the path of incident light. To control the position of focal plane motion compensating stage precisely, a nonlinear control algorithm has been applied by considering coulomb friction which is nonlinear behavior of the compensator system. In our study, we have analyzed the hand shaking vibration using the gyro sensor, and made a mathematical model of compensating stage containing optical sensor and piezo-actuator. Then the nonlinear control algorithm has been designed and its performance has been verified by experiment. In this study, a friction driven peizo-electric actuator with $1{\mu}m$ resolution and 10mm/s speed has been used for stage movement.

  • this paper presents an implementation of digital control system of speed sensorless for Reluctance Synchronous Motor (RSM) drives with direct torque control (DTC). The problem of DTC for high-dynamic performance RSM drive is generating a nonlinear torque due to a saturated nonlinear inductance curve with various load currents. The control system consists of stator flux observer, compensating inductance look-up table, rotor position/speed/torque estimator, two hysteresis band controllers, an optimal switching look-up table, IGBT voltage source unverter, and TMS320C31 DSP controller. The stator flux observer is based on the combined voltage and current model with stator flux feedback adapitve control that inputs are the compensated inductances, current and voltage sensing of motor terminal with estimated rotor angle for wide speed range. The rotor position is estimated rotor speed is determined by differentiation of the rotor position used only in the current model part of the flux observer for a low speed operation area. It does not requrie the knowledge of any montor paramenters, nor particular care for moter starting, In order to prove the suggested control algorithm, we have simulation and testing at actual experimental system. The developed sensorless control system is showing a good speed control response characterisitic result and high performance features in 20/1500 rpm with 1.0Kw RSM having 2.57 ratio of d/q reluctance.

A Double-Hybrid Spread-Spectrum Technique for EMI Mitigation in DC-DC Switching Regulators

  • Randomizing the switching frequency (RSF) to reduce the electromagnetic interference (EMI) of switching power converters is a well-known technique that has been previously discussed. The randomized pulse position (RPP) technique, in which the switching frequency is kept fixed while the pulse position (the delay from the starting of the switching cycle to the turn-on instant within the cycle) is randomized, has been previously addressed in the literature for the same purpose. This paper presents a double-hybrid technique (DHB) for EMI reduction in dc-dc switching regulators. The proposed technique employed both the RSF and the RPP techniques. To effectively spread the conducted-noise frequency spectrum and at the same time attain a satisfactory output voltage quality, two parameters (switching frequency and pulse position) were randomized, and a third parameter (the duty ratio) was controlled by a digital compensator. Implementation was achieved using field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology, which is increasingly being adopted in industrial electronic applications. To evaluate the contribution of the proposed DHB technique, investigations were carried out for each basic PWM, RPP, RSF, and DHB technique. Then a comparison was made of the performances achieved. The experimentally investigated features include the effect of each technique on the common-mode, differential-mode, and total conducted-noise characteristics, and their influence on the converter’s output ripple voltage.

  • The power quality of Single Phase Grid-Connected Inverters (GCIs) has received much attention with the increasing number of Distributed Generation (DG) systems. However, the performance of single phase GCIs get degraded due to several factors such as the grid voltage harmonics, the dead time effect, and the turn ON/OFF of the switches, which causes the harmonics at the output of GCIs. Therefore, it is not easy to satisfy the harmonic standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 without the help of harmonic compensator. To meet the harmonic standards a certain kind of harmonic controller needs to be added to the current control loop to effectively mitigate the low order harmonics. In this paper, the harmonic compensation is performed using a novel robust harmonic compensation method based on Digital Lock-in Amplifier (DLA). In the proposed technique, DLAs are used to extract the amplitude and phase information of the harmonics from the output current and compensate it by using a simple PI controller in the feedforward manner. In order to show the superior performance of the proposed harmonic compensation technique, it is compared with those of conventional harmonic compensation methods in terms of the effectiveness of harmonic elimination, complexity, and implementation. The validity of the proposed harmonic compensation techniques for the single phase GCIs is verified through the experimental results with a 5kW single phase GCI.   • We suggest a low area and high efficiency switched-mode power supply (SMPS) with a pulse width modulation (PWM) generator based on a pseudo relaxation-oscillating technique. In the proposed circuit, the PWM duty ratio is determined by the voltage slope control of an internal capacitor according to amount of charging current in a PWM generator. Compared to conventional SMPSs, the proposed control method consists of a simple structure without the filter circuits needed for an analog-controlled SMPS or the digital compensator used by a digitally-controlled SMPS. The proposed circuit is able to operate at switching frequency of 1MHz~10MHz, as this frequency can be controlled from the selection of one of the internal capacitors in a PWM generator. The maximum current of the core circuit is 2.7 mA, and the total current of the entire circuit including output buffer driver is 15 mA at 10 MHz switching frequency. The proposed SMPS has a simulated maximum ripple voltage of 7mV. In this paper, to verify the operation of the proposed circuit, we performed simulation using Dongbu Hitek BCD $0.35{\mu}m$ technology and measured the proposed circuit.

Systematic Design Method of Fuzzy Logic Controllers by Using Fuzzy Control Cell (퍼지제어 셀을 이용한 퍼지논리제어기의 조직적인 설계방법)

  • A systematic procedure to design fuzzy PID controllers is developed in this paper. The concept of local fuzzy control cell is proposed by introducing both an adequate global control rule and membership functions to simplify a fuzzy logic controller. Fuzzy decision is made by using algebraic product and parallel firing arithematic mean, and a defuzzification strategy is adopted for improving the computational efficiency based on nonfuzzy micro-processor. A direct method, transforming the typical output of quasi-linear fuzzy operator to the digital compensator of PID form, is also proposed. Finally, the proposed algorithm is applied to an DC-servo motor. It is found that this algorithm is systematic and robust through computer simulations and implementation of controller using Intel 8097 micro-processor.
