Recently development trends in information technology expand the activity boundaries for human living beyond coastal zones. These rapid changes of paradigm are stimulating scientists and strategists to be encouraged in making adequate model for marine geographic information system (MGIS) and their applications. Coastal zones are places which are affected by many factors, such as water quality, tide, wave, atmosphere, population, industry, etc. Therefore information related to the coast has to be integrated and analyzed for managing it efficiently. GIS-based Ocean Informatics is suited for those purposes and used in the study for establishing and managing coastal geographic and environmental information system. This paper reviews the properties of ocean and coastal spaces, then defines some MGIS related terminologies for clarifying the scope of MGIS boundaries. In this study, coastal geographic information is established by digital geographic information and digital terrain information. Digital coast chart having information on digital chart and map can merge and analyze various coastal information and can be a useful tool for the coastal integrated management.

In the shipbuilding and marine industry, digital transformation activities are promoted primarily by large shipyards. However, bottlenecks are observed across value chains, and digital transformation effects are reducing because of the cost and technical challenges encountered by supplies. In this study, we proposed a win-win cooperation model for large, small, and medium-sized companies using digital transformation based on the characteristics of the shipbuilding and marine industry through case studies. We investigated the digital transformation progress in German and Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In addition, we identified information-sharing methods and management challenges encountered in enterprise resource planning and manufacturing execution systems in the collaboration process of pipes, panels, blocks, etc. of SMEs that are suppliers of a Korean shipyard, and clarified communication by building a platform based on a common format between shipyards and suppliers. Further, we proposed a standard model of a digital transformation system for enhancing the collaboration between large companies and suppliers and proposed a basic plan including strategies to efficiently and effectively build a digital transformation system based on the standard model.
The paradigm that ships are navigated by means of analog navigation devices and caption's experiences is shifted to that ships can be navigated by digital and autonomous navigation systems due to the rapid development of electronics and communication technologies. Hence, all systems deployed in a ship are automated and integrated since corresponding ship systems are not individually operated but integrated and managed under common operating system. In this paper, we overview recent research projects targeted for digitally integrated ships (referred to as digital ships), outline IEC 61162 series, specifying digital interface standards for digital ships, and finally present several issues for further improvement of the IEC 61162 series. In addition, we broadly categorize digital ships into three systems consisting of multiple sub-systems, including a navigation system, a power system, and a automation system in the aspect of operation and function. Corresponding interfacing range and method, as well as interface specification and data types of one system in a digital ship are also described according to sub-systems, respectively.
A nautical chart is an essential material not only for the safety of navigation at sea, but also for the research and understanding of the ocean. Paper nautical harts have been used for navigational purposes for several hundreds years, but it was show that paper nautical charts have certain limitations, because the speed of ships has increased dramatically, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are now available at sea. Thus, the development of digital charts has been conducted by a number of countries. As a result, the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) has developed a standard format, Special Publication No. 57 (S-57), as a guideline for the production of electronic navigational charts (ENC). Even though ENCs are a state-of-the-art navigational tool because they are produced on the basis of Geographical Information System (GIS) technology, they can be utilized for various purposes. in this paper, the usage of paper nautical charts, ENCs, and digital charts is reviewed. Also, the various application system that make use of electronic navigational harts and digital charts, as a basic geographical source of information, will be examined on the basis of GIS.

In this paper, we present a phase coherent all-digital transceiver for underwater acoustic communication, which allows the system to reduce complexity and increase robustness in time variant underwater environments. It is designed in the digital domain except for transducers and amplifiers and implemented by using a multiple digital signal processors (DSPs) system. For phase coherent reception, conventional systems employed phase-locked loop (PLL) and delay-locked loop (DLL) for synchronization, but this paper suggests a frame synchronization scheme based on the quadrature receiver structure without using phase information. We show experimental results in the underwater anechoic basin at MOERI. The results show that the adaptive equalizer compensates frame synchronization error and the correction capability is dependent on the length of equalizer.
CG and Photo-realistic image composition in the ocean scenes is frequently used in movies and TV advertisement. But it is very difficult task because it's impossible to use calibration tool in outdoor environment or to use auto-calibration algorithm using natural features like KLT(Kanade Lucas Tomasi feature tracker) from the ocean scene. We propose a simple, effective method for solving camera motion using previous knowledge about background structure. We applied our method to the production of a commercial movie, 'Hanbando' and the result was satisfactory.
Recently, world leading companies on manufacturing field are trying to adopt a PLM methodology, which is a new production paradigm, for a survival and strengthening the competitiveness. Some projects for a digital shipyard including a methodology of a digital simulation framework are going on by Seoul national university and Samsung heavy industry. A Database methodology for a scheduling data, an interfacing methodology for a simulation input and output, and a synchronized simulation related methodology are required for enhancing the value of the digital simulation for shipbuilding. In this paper, such a methodologies and a related case study for a fabrication factory and an assembly factory are presented.
