  • This paper deals with a new two dimensional clinometer based on dual axis micromachined accelerometers. The clinometer is a small and low-cost product, which is mainly developed to help golfers read easily the tilt of a putting green. First, this paper proposes the principle of two dimensional clinometer and also a calibration method to improve accuracy with respect to the offset voltage and sensitivity of a accelerometer. Experimental results show that the proposed clinometer can provide useful information on the tilt of an inclined plane.

  • Virtual reality(VR) technology allows users to experience the same sensation as if they look and feel real objects, and furthermore it enables users to experience phenomena in virtual environment which are difficult to illustrate in real world. A multichannel display is one of the virtual reality systems for generating high-quality images and guaranteeing a wide view angle using multiple projectors. In this work, we present the multichannel display system whose resolution is $4096{\times}1536$. We implement an automatic calibration (geometric and color) method for compensating the distorted image and color. The results clearly show the proposed system provides continuous and smooth images.

  • Satellite devices for fine attitude control of the Science & Technology Satellite-2 (STSAT-2). Based on the mission requirements of STSAT-2, the conventional analog-type sun sensors were found to be inadequate, motivating the development of a compact, fast and fine digital sun sensor (FDSS). The FDSS uses a CMOS image sensor and has an accuracy of less than 0.03degrees, an update rate of 5Hz and a weight of less than 800g. A pinhole-type aperture is substituted for the optical lens to minimize its weight. The target process speed is obtained by utilizing the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), which acquires images from the CMOS sensor, and stores and processes the image data. The sensor accuracy is maintained by a rigorous centroid algorithm. This paper describes the FDSS designs, realizations, tests and calibration results.

  • The factors involved in development of electronic grading systems for commodities such as grains and seeds include determination of the factors that influence the end-product utilization of the commodities, and the degree to which these can be predicted by electronic methods. The possibility of exchanging existing methods of grading by electronic methods has to be considered. The respective merits of techniques such as Digital Imaging and Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy have to be considered. Digital Imaging is a computerized version of visual inspection and grading, whereas NIR spectroscopy has the potential for grading on the basis of composition and functionality, Selection and evaluation of NIR instruments is an important factor, as are sampling and sample presentation to electronic instruments, and particularly the engineering involved in sample presentation. Sample assembly, and software for calibration development are described in the presentation. Finally the impact and implications of introduction of electronic grading are discussed with particular attention to marketing of the commodities.

  • This paper describes the standard system for calibrating pulse generator of partial discharge(PD) and its uncertainty. The system is consisted of digital pulse generator, digital recorder and evaluation software. The uncertainty requirement of calibrator charge is less than $\pm$ (0.1pC + 0.03q) and that of pulse duration is less than $\pm$ 10 %. The system can generate various kind of calibration pulses such as single pulse, double pulses, oscillation pulse, long-duration pulse, random pulses and evaluate their uncertainty.

  • Recently, the authors have developed a new material test system fur thin film at the high temperature. It is so compact and precise with sub micron resolution that it seems to be a useful tool fur research of the oxide film growth, its mechanical behavior and failure mechanism. To this end. in this paper three methologies are described for in-situ monitoring of the displacement & strain and the temperature, the oxide thickness. These are the Laser Speckle analysis with digital image correlation technique, the two-color infra-red thermometer and the laser reflection interferometry respectively. The calibration results and some issues which should be addressed for practical application are presented.

  • Most of flated scanners and digital cameras in prepress process utilize CCD technology. Device calibration and characterization process is needed to transform the device dependent color to the device independent color. ICC profiles for digital input devices encapsulated information relating the device values to CIELAB or CIEXYZ coordinates. The main purposes of this article is to evaluate some of the transformation methods based on ICC proposed device profiles and to propose optimal color transformation method for accurate color imaging in printing process.

  • The IEEE 1451.4 standards defines an architectural model for interfacing smart transducers for sensors & actuators. This standard allows analogue transducers to communicate their identification and calibration data in a digital format. A digital format is called TEDS(transducer electronic data sheet). However, the standard template of IEEE 1451.4 TEDS do not supports gas sensors to use in electronic nose system, such as array sensors. In this paper, a solution to standardize sensors for electronic nose systems is presented.

  • High-performance smartphones, equipped with a digital camera and an application software, can render conventional bench-top laboratory instruments mobile at affordable costs. As the smartphone-based devices are portable and wireless, they have wide applications especially in providing point-of-care (POC) tests in resource-constrained areas. We developed a hand-held diagnostic system, Mobile SmartScope, which consists of a small optical unit integrated with a smartphone. The performance of the SmartScope was favorably compared with that of conventional light microscopy in detecting and quantifying red blood cells. We also evaluated the fluorescence detection limit of the SmartScope incorporated with a blue light-emitting diode and appropriate optical filters by using fluorescently labeled microbeads for intensity calibration.
