  • The low-cost, simple structured micropump which is actuated by piezoelectricdiscs, is fabricated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and the performances of the micropump, such as pump rate and backward pressure, are characterized. The PDMS micropump with diffusers instead of passive check valves as a flow-rectifying element was fabricated. While the square wave driving voltage is applied to the piezoelectric disc of the actuator, the flow rate is measured by fluid displacement variation of the outlet tube. The flow rate of micropump increases with enhancing the applied voltage due to the increase of diaphragm deflection. The flow rate and the backward pressure of the micropump with diffusers are about $32.9{\mu}{\el}$/min and 173Pa respectively for the above mentioned deflection conditions.

  • This paper proposes a novel diffuser design for Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbines (DAWT) based on the blunt trailing edge airfoil AF300. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out to measure the performance of the AF300 diffuser against diffusers made with the shape of other high performance low wind speed airfoils. The results show that the proposed diffuser produces a greater air mass flow increase through the plane of the turbine than the other diffusers and it can be used to increase the performance of a horizontal axis wind turbine.

  • Using the acoustic resonances and oscillatory pulsations considered as the branch of wave technologies, the concept of the acoustic resonance diffusers for waste water treatment which maximize the oxygen transfer efficiency in gas-liquid two phase medium have been proposed, and studies for the principles and performance tests were accomplished. Besides, the design concepts for the low pressure Helmholtz resonator, cylinder and annular type reflection resonator and combined type resonance system have been implemented. The acoustic resonance energy which can speed up the mass transfer process increase the oxygen transfer efficiency, and periodic pulsations generated from the instability of air jet from nozzle make very small air bubbles. Then, the annular type jet resonator(AJR) applying these two principles successfully was evalulated as the most promising device and also the efficiency showing $20{\sim}30%$ better than conventional diffusers has been verified experimentally.

  • The research aims to study the different flexible rubber tube diffusers used in urban wastewater treatment processes and aquaculture systems. The experiment was conducted in small-scale aeration tank with different physical properties of the tubes that were used as aerators. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient ($k_La$), oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE) and aeration efficiency (AE) were measured and determined to compare the diffusers. Moreover, the bubble hydrodynamic parameters were analyzed in terms of bubble diameter ($d_B$) and rising velocity ($U_B$) by a high speed camera (2,000 frames/s). Then the interfacial area (a) and liquid-side mass transfer coefficient ($k_L$) can be calculated. The physical properties (tube wall thickness, tensile strength, orifice size, hardness and elongation) have been proven to be the key factor that controls the performance (kLa and OTE). The effects of hardness and elongation on bubble formation, orifice size and a-area were clearly proved. It is not necessary to generate too much fine bubbles to increase the a-area: this relates to high power consumption and the decrease of the kL. Finally, the wall thickness, elongation and hardness associated of the flexible tube diffuser (tube No. 12) were concluded, to be the suitable properties for practically producing, in this research.

  • Second throat supersonic exhaust diffusers (STEDs) were designed to simulate high-altitude conditions according to the normal-shock model. Experimental studies were performed on the STEDs to investigate how performance characteristics varied with the length and diameter of the STED using high-pressure nitrogen gas. The variation in performance due to length indicated that the performance of the STED could be very slightly improved by adjusting the diffuser inlet length ($L_d$), and it could be significantly improved by optimizing the second throat length ratio ($L_{st}/D_{st}$) and the divergence length ($L_s$). The starting and vacuum chamber pressures exhibited the highest level of performance near ($A_d/A_{st}$) of the design point.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of electromagnetic field uniformity in a reverberation chamber with flat diffusers composed of multiple dielectric materials that can be used as an alternative facility for the analysis, test and evaluation of electromagnetic interference and immunity. The field characteristics and the size of the test volume inside the reverberation chamber with the new diffuser of multiple dielectric materials are simulated and analyzed at $2.5{\sim}3$ GHz band. The FDTD method is used to analyze the field characteristics. The field uniformity, polarization characteristics and tolerance are improved by the new diffuser with smaller physical size. The reverberation chamber with flat diffusers composed of multiple dielectric materials shows better electromagnetic performance and larger test volume than normal chamber.

  • Aeration by using diffusers usually requires approximately 50~90% of the total electricity needed to operate WWTP (WasteWater Treatment Plant)s. Accurate evaluation of the oxygen transfer efficiency for an aeration system, and recommendation of a better alternative may help saving WWTP operational costs. Appropriate techniques and methods to achieve this purpose have not been introduced in Korea. In this study, in-process analysis was performed for a coarse bubble aeration system by the off-gas method to evaluate its applicability in Korea. To accomplish this analysis, an off-gas test, unsteady-state clean water test and steady-state off-gas column test was conducted and comparisons to other aeration systems were made. The ${\alpha}$ and the F estimated from the results of the unsteady-state clean water test and the steady-state off-gas column test were 0.61 and 0.90 respectively in a coarse bubble aeration system. The comparison of P.E tube diffusers laid out single spiral roll and ceramic dome diffusers laid out full floor coverage showed that the oxygen transfer efficiency of the coarse bubble aeration system was less than or similar to other aeration systems. But, airflow rates per unit area were 4~5 times greater than other aeration systems. In regards to the oxygen transfer efficiency for airflow rates per unit area, a retrofit to higher efficiency diffusers was urgently needed. This study showed proved that off-gas methods can apply to evaluate diffuser performances to estimate operating factors and to compare other aeration systems in Korea.
