  • It is generally known that radial vane blowers with vaneless diffuser may generate mostly only a rotating stall but backward curved vane blowers may do both an impeller and a diffuser rotating stalls. In this study, it was found from the numerical and experimental results that the diffuser rotating stall does not appear in a radial vane because of the suppression for the diffuser stall appearance by occurring of impeller rotating stall in a large flow rate coefficient. The diffuser rotating stalls occurring when the width of diffuser is broaden fur a backward curved vane blower are classified definitely by the diffuser flow rate coefficient defined by adopting the varying diffuser width.

  • The effects of the diffuser vane on the performances of the multistage centrifugal pump were investigated experimentally, taking account of the interactions among the diffuser vane, the return vane, and the next stage impeller. It is very important to match well the diffuser vane with the return vane, for improving the hydraulic efficiency of the pump. The efficiency may be more improved by making the cross-sectional area of the channel from the diffuser vane outlet to the return vane inlet larger, as much as possible.

  • This study presents the centrifugal compressor performance for three different vane stagger angles and wall pressure distribution within vaned diffuser channels, and is also discussed about the stability with respect to the compressor components. As the vane stagger angle decreases, the flow rate for the stall onset decreases, and higher pressure can be obtained at the low flow rate region, however, the effective operation range of the compressor decreases because of the blockage effect of the diffuser vane. Low pressure pocket within the vaned diffuser channel moves from the pressure side of leading edge to the suction side as the flow rate decreases. The compressor system stability mainly depends on that of the diffuser.

  • This paper presents an optimization procedure for high-efficiency design of a mixed-flow pump. Optimization techniques based on a weighted-average surrogate model are used to optimize a vane diffuser of a mixed-flow pump. Validation of the numerical results is performed through experimental data for head, power and efficiency. Three-level full factorial design is used to generate nine design points within the design space. Three-dimensional Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes equations with the shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by using finite volume approximation and solved on hexahedral grids to evaluate the efficiency as the objective function. In order to reduce pressure loss in the vane diffuser, two variables defining the straight vane length ratio and the diffusion area ratio are selected as design variables in the present optimization. As the results of the design optimization, the efficiency at the design flow coefficient is improved by 7.05% and the off-design efficiencies are also improved in comparison with the reference design.

  • Recently for the impressive gains of performance and efficiency over vaneless diffuser with apparently little or no loss in flow range, the use of LSVD(Low Solidity Vaned Diffuser) is well recommended. The experiments on the effect of the vane turning angle variation(positive, negative, zero) with other design parameters fixed on the performance and flow range were carried out. Diffuser with zero turning angle has the best characteristics in terms of performance and efficiency and The FFT results show the different frequency characteristics due to the vane turning angle in low flow range.

  • The impeller and vane diffuser for the mixed flow pump(NS550) was designed by using meridional selection program and inverse design method. We decided the meridional shape of the impeller from the meridional design parameter, such as the specific speed and maximum diameter at the impeller exit. The meridional shape of vane diffuser was set from the impeller shape, distribution of cross sectional area and maximum diffuser diameter. The angle of impeller blade and diffuser vane was designed by using inverse design method. The predicted overall performance by using commercial CFD code(ANSYS CFX-11) shown good agreement with design goals.

  • Ejector-diffuser system has long been used in many diverse fields of engineering applications and it has advantages over other fluid machinery, because of no moving parts and structural simplicity. This system makes use of high-pressure primary stream to entrain the low-pressure secondary stream through pure shear actions between two streams. In general, the flow field in the ejector-diffuser system is highly complicated due to turbulent mixing, compressibility effects and sometimes flow unsteadiness. A fatal drawback of the ejector system is in its low efficiency. Many works have been done to improve the performance of the ejector system, but not yet satisfactory, compared with that of other fluid machinery. In the present study, a mixing guide vane was installed at the inlet of the secondary stream for the purpose of the performance improvement of the ejector system. A CFD method has been applied to simulate the supersonic flows inside the ejector-diffuser system. The present results obtained were validated with existing experimental data. The mixing guide vane effects are discussed in terms of the entrainment ratio, total pressure loss as well as pressure recovery.

  • The flow instability in a low specific speed mixed-flow pump, having a positive slope of head-flow characteristics was investigated. Based on the static pressure measurements, it was found that a rotating stall in the vaned diffuser occurs at about 65% flow rate of best efficiency point (BEP). A dynamic Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) measurement and the numerical simulations were conducted in order to investigate the flow fields. As a result, the diffuser rotating stall was simulated even by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the calculated periodic flow patterns agree well with the measured ones by DPIV. It is clarified that a periodical large scaled backflow, generated at the leading edge of the suction surface of the diffuser vane, causes the instability. Furthermore, the growth of the strong vortex at the leading edge of the diffuser vane induces the strong backflow from the diffuser outlet to the inlet. The scale of one stall cell is covered over four-passages in total thirteen vane-passages.

  • Numerical simulation on the two-stage centrifugal compressor with Low Solidity Vaned Diffuser LSVD) for HFC-134a Turbo-chiller was performed using a commercial code. The comparative study with experimental results from other compressor was also investigated to testify the simulation schemes. The numerical analysis was separately simulated for each stage of the compressor and the effect of impeller-diffuser flow interaction was considered. Setting angle of the diffuser vane changed in the range of 15 deg. and the effects on its variation were discussed in detail including the flow analysis in the passage of the compressor. The vane setting angle obtained from the preliminary design was slightly adjusted to the optimal value by the performance enhancement in terms of pressure recovery and flow characteristics.
