  • A SiC epilayer on the 6H-SiC crystal substrate was grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The crystal structure of the SiC epilayer was investigated by using the X-ray diffraction patterns and the Roman scattering spectroscopy. The SiC epilayer on the 6H-SiC substrate was grown to be homoepilayer by CVD. In order to distinguish a certain SiC polytype mixed in the SiC crystal grown by the modified Lely method, we have calculated the X-ray diffraction intensities and Brags angles of the typical SiC crystal powders. By comparing the measured X-ray diffraction pattern with the calculated ones, it was identified that the SiC crystal grown by the modified Lely method was the 6H-SiC crystal mixed some 15R-SiC.

  • In order to identify clay minerals in the soft ground, which has been deposited along the coastline of the Korean peninsula, 14 samples have been taken at different locations and then X-ray diffraction analysis is carried out for them. It is known from the analysis that the various kinds of clay minerals mixed with different portions exist in the soft ground, but halloysite is not traced in any samples. It is featured regionally that kaolinite and illite are found in the western coast and the southern coast. Montmorillonites exists only in the western coast. This feature of regional occurrences can be explained with the help of geology of the region. Activities determined from physical properties of the soils do not coincide with those of clay minerals identified from X-ray diffraction analysis.

  • This paper presents a study on the dispersion effect of the X-Ray diffraction, glass transition and DMA properties of organic modifier clay/epoxy nanocomposites produced in a homogenizer. Several experiments were conducted including different types of dispersion condition with varying processing conditions such as homogenizer rotor speed and applied time of homogenizer. The effects of these variables on the dispersion properties of nanocomposites were then studied. In order to fully understand the experimental results, a X-ray diffraction, DSC and DMA were used to investigate the effect of above mentioned variables on microstructure and intercalation/exfoliation of organic modifier clay/epoxy nanocomposites. The results from this work could be used to determine the best processing condition to obtain appropriate levels of d-spacing, glasss transition temperature and storage modulus in organic modifier clay/epoxy nanocomposites.

  • Wave run-up is an important phenomenon that should be considered in ocean structure design. In this study, the wave run-up of a surface-piercing circular cylinder was calculated in the time domain using the three-dimensional linear and fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) techniques. The NWT was based on the boundary element method and the mixed Eulerian and Lagrangian method. Stokes second-order waves were applied to evaluate the effect of the nonlinear waves on wave run-up, and an artificial damping zone was adopted to reduce the amount of reflected and re-reflected waves from the sidewall of the NWT. Parametric studies were conducted to determine the effect of wavelength, wave steepness, and the draft of the cylinder on the wave run-up of the cylinder. The maximum wave run-up value occurred at 0°, which was in front of the cylinder, and the minimum value occurred near the circumferential angle of 135°. As the diffraction parameter increased, the wave run-up increased up to 1.7 times the wave height. Furthermore, the wave run-up was 4% higher than the linear wave when the wave steepness was 1/35. In particular, the crest height of the wave run-up increased by 8%.

  • Picosecond (ps) laser micro-machining has emerged as an attractive method of fabricating high-precision microstructures, especially in metals. In this paper, a metallic mold for diffraction gratings is fabricated with a mode-locked 12 Ps $Nd:YVO_4$ laser. Laser pulses with a wavelength of 355nm are irradiated on the surface of NOK 80, a mold material, to generate line patterns. In order to minimize the line width, laser power is set just above the ablation threshold of NOK 80. Results show that the spectrum from the fabricated mold is good enough for some industrial application.

  • We prepared the photorefractive sol-gel glass based on organic-inorganic hybrid materials containing a charge transporting molecule, second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore, photosensitizer, and plasticizer. Carbazole and 2-{ 4-[(2-hydroxy-ethyl)-methyl-amino]-benzylidene}-malononitrile were reacted with isocyanato-triethoxy silane and the functionalized silanes were employed to fabricate the efficient photorefractive media induding 2,4,7-trinitrot1uorenone (TNF) to form a charge transfer complex. The prepared sol-gel glass samples showed a large net gain coefficient and high diffraction efficiency at a certain composition. As the concentration of photosensitizer increased, the photorefractive properties were enhanced due to an increment of charge carrier density. Dynamic behavior of the diffraction efficiency was also investigated with the concentration of the photosensitizer.

  • This paper presents the design and evaluation of the optical zoom system for an LWIR camera. The 12.8operating wavelength range of this system is from $7.7{\mu}m$ to $12.8{\mu}m$. Through a paraxial design and optimization process, we have obtained the extended four-group inner-focus zoom system with focal lengths of 10 to 100 mm, which consists of the six lenses including four aspheric surfaces and two diffractive surfaces. The diffractive lenses were used to balance the higher-order aberrations, and its diffraction properties were evaluated by scalar diffraction theory. We have calculated the polychromatic integrated diffraction efficiency and the MTF drop generated by background noise. The f-number of the zoom system is F/1.4 at all positions. Fields of view are given by $51.28^{\circ}{\times}38.46^{\circ}$ at wide field and $5.50^{\circ}{\times}4.12^{\circ}$ at narrow field positions. In conclusion, this design procedure results in a $10{\times}$ compact zoom lens system useful for an LWIR camera.

  • A backscatter Kikuchi diffraction attachment to an SEM enables the convenient investigation of grain orientations on bulk or micro surface. Their relation to micro structural features gives insight into many aspects of anisotropic materials properties. In micro area such as Micro Electro Mechanical Systems(MEMS) devices is required in order to improve understanding of how they may be expected to perform upon the micro scale. Electro Back Scatter Diffraction (EBSD) helps us to find uniform area as MEMS material. The ${\gamma}-TiAl$ has two different lamellar structures ${\gamma}/{\alpha}2-Ti_3Al$ phase which have shows $\{111\}{\gamma}//\{0001\}{\alpha}2$ plane indexing. The micro size testing specimen was successfully made by this structural relation. Interlamellar structure specimen averagely show $20{\sim}25%$ lower fracture toughness value compare with translamellar specimens Moreover micro fracture surface and micro crack progress were observed.

  • Amorphous chalcogenide thin films, especially a-(Se, S) based films, exhibit a number of photo-induced phenomena. In this study, we make the As$\_$40/Ge$\_$10/Se$\_$15/S$\_$35//Ag thin film and then we measure the holographic diffraction efficiency according to thickness of Ag. And we form the two-dimensional holographic grating. At first, we formed one-dimensional grating and then we form two-dimensional grating by rotate the sample. We found out the most suitable thickness of Ag and in case of As$\_$40/Ge$\_$10/Se$\_$15/S$\_$35//Ag(600${\AA}$), the diffraction efficiency was more higher than other samples. The holographic grating was formed by He-Ne laser(λ=632.8nm). The intensity of incident beam was 2.5mW and incident angle was 20$^{\circ}$. We confirm. the two-dimensional holographic grating by the pattern of diffracted beam and AFM(Atomic Force Microscope) image. We perform the etching process using by 0.26N NaOH in order to confirm clearly two-dimensional grating.

  • In this study, in order to develop the capacitor composition ceramics with the good dielectric properties, $(Ba_{1-x}Ca_x)(Ti_{0.85}Zr_{0.12}Sn_{0.03})O_3$ (abbreviated as BCTZ) ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The effects of Ca substitution on the microstructure and dielectric properties was investigated. The X-ray diffraction patterns demonstrated that all the specimens showed perovskite phase, and secondary phases are indicated in the measurement range of X-ray diffraction. Also, all the specimens indicated an rhombohedron phase structure. It was identified from the X-ray diffraction patterns that the secondary phase formed in grain boundaries and then decreased the dielectric properties. For all the specimens, observed one peak was tetragonal cubic phase transition temperature($T_c$), which is located in the vicinity of room temperature.
