  • Deformation behavior of $Zr_{55}Cu_{30}Al_{10}Ni_5$(at. %) bulk metallic glass(BMG) fabricated by suction casting method has been investigated at elevated temperatures in this study. The BMG was first verified to have an amorphous structure with the analysis of X-ray diffraction(XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) data. A series of compression tests has consequently been performed in the region of supercooled liquid temperature to investigate the behavior of high temperature deformation. A transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian flow appeared to take place depending upon both the strain rate and test temperature. A processing map based on a dynamic materials model has been constructed to estimate a feasible forming condition for this BMG alloy.

  • Recently, silicone is being used for LED chip lens due to its good thermal stability and optical transmittance. In order to predict residual stresses, which cause optical birefringence and mechanical warpage of silicone, a finite element analysis was conducted for the curing of silicone during molding. For the analysis of the curing process, a dynamic cure kinetics model was derived based on the results of a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) testing and applied to the material properties for finite element analysis. Finite element simulation results showed that a step cure cycle reduced abrupt reaction heat and showed a decrease in the residual stresses.

  • This paper is focused on the characterization of the thermomechanical properties of semicrystalline poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEKK) and of carbon fiberreinforced thermoplastic based laminated composites (C/PEKK) below and above the glass transition temperature (Tg). Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and tensile tests are carried out on both pure PEKK polymer and [(±45)2, +45]s C/PEKK composite samples, showing a significant similarity in behavior. The employment of a simple micromechanical model confirms that the mechanical and physical behavior of the polymer and that of the matrix in the composite are similar.

  • Polybutadiene(PB) was epoxidized to various extents with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (MCPBA) in homogeneous solution. The thermal properties of the epoxidized PBs were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result of epoxidation the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PB increased by approximately $0.8^{\circ}$ for each 1 mol% of epoxidation. The thermal decomposition of the epoxidised PBs occurred in two-step process, while that of PB exhibited apparent one-step degradation process.

  • Transesterification between poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) and bisphenol-A-polycarbonate (PC) is studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. When the blend of PTT/PC is annealed at higher temperatures, the samples do not show any melting peak at an initial stage, indicating the samples completely lose their crystallinity due to the formation of random copolymers. However, when the random copolymer is annealed at temperatures lower than the melting temperature of PTT, a melting peak is observed, indicating that the random copolymers are sequentially reordered. The melting point and the heat of fusion of crystals formed from the crystallization-induced sequential reordering depend upon the annealing temperature and time. The average sequence length determined from NMR is increased as the blocks are regenerated.

  • Inclusion complexation of $\alpha$-cyclodextrin($\alpha$-CD), $\beta$-cyclodextrin($\beta$-CD) and tri-O-methyl-$\beta$-cyclodextrin(tri-O-methyl-$\beta$-CD) with chlorpamide(CPA) in aqueous solution and in the solid state were studied by the solubility method, spectroscopy (UV, IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and powder X-ray diffractometry, and all their molar ratios were found to be 1:1. The solid complexes of CPA with three kinds of cyclodextrins were prepared by a freezedrying method, and their dissolution behaviors were examined. As a result, the release of CPA from the inclusion complexes was significantly improved. The intrinsic dissolution rate of CPA in cyclodextrin inclusion complexes was about 51 times ($\alpha$-CD inclusion complex) and 12 tmies ($\beta$-CD inclusion complex) larger than that of intact CPA.

  • In this paper, the isothermal crystallization kinetics of a functional PP (FPP) with different grafting yields (GY)-methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) grafted PP were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the crystallization rate of FPP (GY=4.83%) was the highest for all of the studied samples. Furthermore, for the FPP with different GY, the value of $t_{1/2}$ became longer with increasing the grafting yield (GY). The possible explanation was that the quaternary ammonium groups introduced affected the crystallization process of the FPP in two opposite directions, i.e. promoting the nucleation and hindering the transport of the chain molecules towards the growing nuclei. Polarized optical micrographs showed that the DMC chains acted as nucleating agents, which accelerated the nucleation. In addition, the results showed the FPP had lower nucleation free energy than the PP. This study would be useful for designing the processing parameters of the grafted samples.

  • The correlation between crystallization and deformation behavior in the supercooled liquid region (SLR) of a $Cu_{54}Ni_{6}Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ bulk metallic glass (BMG) alloy is investigated by compression tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electron energy loss spectrometry (EELS) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). In the SLR, This BMG alloy was strongly depended on the deformation temperature and the alloy exhibits important change in deformation behavior after a given time which is directly connected to the development of crystallization. Compressive stress impeded decomposition and consequently retarded forming of nano-crystal, which led to enlarge the homogeneous deformation region of the BMG alloy in SLR during compression test.

  • A new method has been developed to fabricate microcomponents by a combination of photolithography and sintering of metallic powder mixtures, without the need for compression and the addition of Mg. This involves (1) the fabrication of a micromould, (2) mould filling of the powder/binder mixture, (3) debinding and (3) sintering. The starting powdered materials consisted of a mixture of aluminium powder(average size of 2.5 um) and alloying elemental powder of Cu and Sn(less than 70nm), at appropriate proportions to achieve nominal compositions of Al-6wt%Cu, Al-6wt%Cu-3wt%Sn. This paper presents detailed investigation of debinding behaviour and microstructural development.
