  • This paper presents exact solutions for the free vibrations and buckling of rectangular plates having two opposite, simply supported edges subjected to linearly varying normal stresses causing pure in-plane moments, the other two edges being free. Assuming displacement functions which are sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), the simply supported edge conditions are satisfied exactly. With this the differential equation of motion for the plate is reduced to an ordinary one having variable coefficients (in y). This equation is solved exactly by assuming power series in y and obtaining its proper coefficients (the method of Frobenius). Applying the free edge boundary conditions at y=0, b yields a fourth order characteristic determinant for the critical buckling moments and vibration frequencies. Convergence of the series is studied carefully. Numerical results are obtained for the critical buckling moments and some of their associated mode shapes. Comparisons are made with known results from less accurate one-dimensional beam theory. Free vibration frequency and mode shape results are also presented. Because the buckling and frequency parameters depend upon Poisson's ratio ( V ), results are shown for $0{\leq}v{\leq}0.5$, valid for isotropic materials.

  • A theoretical analysis was carried out to examine the concentration behavior of methane from a biogas using a polysulfone membrane. After the governing equations were derived for the cocurrent flow mode in a membrane module, the coupled nonlinear differential equations were numerically solved with the Compaq Visual Fortran 6.6 software. At the typical operating condition of mole fraction of 0.7 in a feed stream, the mole fraction of methane in the retentate increased to 0.76 while the normalized retentate flow rate to the feed flow rate decreased from 1 to 0.79. When either the mole fraction of methane in a feed increased or the pressure of the feed stream increased, the methane mole fraction in the retentate increased. On the other hand, it was found that as either the membrane area decreased or the ratio of the permeate pressure to the feed pressure increased, the methane mole fraction in the retentate decreased. In case that the stage cut increased, the methane mole fraction in the retentate increased while the recovery of methane slightly decreased.

  • Government plans to construct a double-deck tunnel under a portion of Gyeongbu Expressway that will solve traffic problems and could also be used as a flood storage facility. Divergence tunnels connect the main tunnel to the urban areas and their construction effects on adjacent structures at shallow depth need to be analyzed. This study primarily includes the numerical analysis of construction effects of divergence tunnels on utility tunnels. The utility tunnel was analyzed for three cases of volume loss applied to the divergence tunnel and two cases of the angle between main tunnel and divergence tunnel ($36^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$). The results show that the more the volume loss was applied and the shorter the distance was between utility tunnel and divergence tunnel, the more the utility tunnel was affected in terms of induced displacements, angular displacement and stability. The worst scenario was found out to be the one where the angle between main tunnel and divergence tunnel was $36^{\circ}$ and the distance between divergence tunnel and utility tunnel was 10 m, resulting in the largest displacement and differential settlement at the bottom of the utility tunnel. A relationship between the angular displacement and the distance to diameter ratio was also established.

  • Background: It is well established that cross talk between natural killer (NK) cells and myeloid dendritic cells (DC) leads to NK cell activation and DC maturation. In the present study, we investigated whether type 1-polarized DC (DC1) matured in the presence of IFN-${\gamma}$ and type 2-polarized DC (DC2) matured in the presence of PGE2 can differentially activate NK cells. Methods: In order to generate DC, plastic adherent monocytes were cultured in RPMI 1640 containing GM-CSF and IL-4. At day 6, maturation was induced by culturing the cells for 2 days with cytokines or PGE2 in the presence or absence of LPS. Each population of DC was cocultured with NK cells for 24 h. The antigen expression on DC was analyzed by flow cytometry and cytokine production in culture supernatant was measured by ELISA or a bioassay for TNF-${\alpha}$ determination. NK cell-mediated lysis was determined using a standard 4h chromium release assay. Results: DC2, unlike DC1, had weak, if any, ability to induce NK cell activation as measured by IFN-${\gamma}$ production and cytolytic activity. DC2 were weakly stimulated by activated NK cells compared to DC1. In addition, IFN-${\gamma}$-primed mature DC appeared to be most resistant to active NK cell-mediated lysis even at a high NK cell/DC ratio. On the other hand, PGE2-primed DC were less resistant to feedback regulation by NK cells than IFN-${\gamma}$-primed mature DC. Finally, we showed that the differential effect of two types of DC population on NK cell activity is not due to differences in their ability to form conjugates with NK cells. Conclusion: These results suggest that different combinations of inflammatory mediators differentially affect the effector function of DC and, as a result, the function of NK cells, eventually leading to distinct levels of activation in adaptive immunity.

  • Aspirating or swallowing foreign bodies is a common occurrence. If they are wholly or partly radiopaque, their localization in and progress through the gastrointestinal tract can be more effective. Of the dental origin foreign materials swallowed, the most common things are fragments of anterior maxillary partial denture. But the radiopacity of denture base resins is not sufficient to determine the location of the objects. The purpose of this study was to develop a radiopaque dental acrylic resin, which has clinically detectible radiopacity with minimal change of mechanical properties and color. The radiopacity, color change(CIE 6..E) and microhardness of acrylic resins were determined after mixing barium sulfate or iodide compound. Thermocycling course was conducted to determine the change of characteristic of resins after using for a long time in the mouth. Five or ten percent of barium sulfate to total weight of cured material was mixed with heat curing dental acrylic resin or chemically curing orthodontic resin. In the case of iodide compound, the mixing ratio was two or three percent. After mixing the high radiopaque materials, resin was cured to 20×20×2 mm plate, polished with #600 sand paper and finally polished with Microcloth(Buehler). The specimens were thermocycled in 5 and 55 t distilled water for 2,000 times, and the measurement of radiopacity, color and Vickers hardness was repeated every 500 times thcrmocycling. The radiopacity of specimens on the X -ray films was measured with densitometer(X-rite). The color change was detennined with differential colorimeter(Model TC-6FX, Tokyo Denshoku), and the Vickers hardness number was measured with microhardness tester(Mitsuzawa). The following results were obtained : 1. All the three variables, the kinds of acrylic resins, the mixing or the kinds of high radiopaque materials and thermocycling, had combined effect on the radiopacity of the dental acrylic resins(p<0.0l). 2. The two variables, the mixing or the kinds of high radiopaque materials and thermocycling, influenced on the radiopacity of the dental acrylic resins(p<0.01). But the kinds of acrylic resins did not influence on the color change of mixed dental acrylic resins(p>0.05). 3. Each of the three variables, the kinds of acrylic resins, the mixing or the kinds of high radiopaque materials and thermocycling, influenced on the radiopacity of dental acrylic resins(p<0.0l). 4. The high radiopaque materials used in this study did not yield clinically usable radiopacity, and the color change was great after mixing those materials.

  • Insoluble polyphenol antioxidants, quercetin and catechin, were stabilized through the complexation with cyclodextrin to increase heat and pH stabilities. Comparison of inclusion complex formabilities of quercetin and catechin with ${\alpha}-,\;{\beta}-$, and ${\gamma}-CDs$ revealed ${\beta}-CD$ to be the most suitable result. Optimal molar mixing ratio of ${\beta}-CD$ and quercetin or catechin for inclusion complex formation was found to be 1 : 1. Inclusion complexation was confirmed using differential scanning calorimetry. Solubility of ${\beta}-CD-antioxidant$ inclusion complexes increased compared with native antioxidants, Stability against temperature and pH of ${\beta}-CD-antioxidant$ inclusion complex analyzed revealed antioxidant activities of ${\beta}-CD-quercetin$ and catechin inclusion complexes have higher stabilization compare to raw quercetin and catechin. Peroxide value of linoleic acid dissolved in water decreased substantionally after using ${\beta}-CD-quercetin$ inclusion complex. ${\beta}-CD-antioxidant$ inclusion complex can be used effectively as a fresh-food preservative.

  • FEMLAB is a powerful interactive environment for modeling, solving all kinds of scientific and engineering problems based on partial differential equations(PDEs). Separation process of chiral compound in HPLC columns was simulated by FEMLAB. To study change of elution profile with isotherm models, non-competitive and competitive Langmuir adsorption isotherm were adopted. Separated material was (R, S)-ibuprofen [(R, S)-2-(4-isobutyl phenyl) propionic acid], an anti-inflammatory agent, which retain the pharmacological activity in the (S)-(+)-enantiomer. Sample concentrations were changed from 0.5 mg/ml to 2.0 mg/ml at a flow rate of 1 ml/min and flow rate varied from 1 ml/min to 3 ml/min at an ibuprofen concentration of 2.0 mg/ml and $20{\mu}l$ of injection volume. Simulated results were well fitted with experimental data.

  • Effects of the addition of three commercial oligosaccharide syrups into a Korean rice cake (Karedduk) on the textural characteristics and retrogradation of the rice cake were examined during the storage for 5 days at $25^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$. Each syrups contained maltose (M75), isomaltose and panose (HL), or maltotetraose (G4) as major sugars. The increment (rates) in gumminess, hardness and chewiness during the storage were significantly reduced by replacing rice flour (up to 10%) with the oligosaccharides. The retardation in the textural changes by the oilgosaccharides was more significant when the rice cake was stored at $25^{\circ}C$ than at $4^{\circ}C$. Among the three types, HL exhibited most effective in retarding the textural changes. Thermograms by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) showed that the oligosaccharide increased the onset temperatures and enthalpy for the starch melting, but the recrystallinity measured from the enthalpy ratio before and after the storage was significantly reduced by the presence of the oligosaccharide. Especially with 5% HL, the recrystallinity was significantly low (72.7%) compared to rice cake without HL (88.1%). Therefore, HL had great efficiency in retarding starch retrogradation as well as textural changes of the rice cake during the storage.

  • In Korea, nearly 100 billion won is spent annually under the name of energy voucher on 600,000 households for the last five years, and this is a unique case and hard to monitor worldwide. Therefore, no studies have been conducted to assess impacts of the energy voucher on energy consumption and cost burden alleviation for beneficiaries. This paper aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of energy vouchers in terms of energy expense. The propensity score matching was conducted on samples of low-income households based on the Korea Welfare Panel. Then, simple Difference-In-Differences and Fixed-Effect Difference-In-Differences models were applied to estimate the effect of energy vouchers. In results, the beneficiaries of energy vouchers would spend an additional 4,371~4,870 won per month on energy consumption. The ratio is equivalent to 51.9~57.7 percent of the aid, which is also the highest when compared with 23~56 percent of U.S. Food Stamp. In terms of energy welfare, voucher payment could become one of the best management practices. However, identifying the blind spots as non-reciprocal households and expanding the differential support mechanism that reflects the energy consumption environment should be solved in the future.

  • Zaltoprofen loaded polyoxalate (POX) microspheres were prepared by an emulsion solvent-evaporation/extraction method like oil-in-water (O/W) for sustained release of zaltoprofen. The influence of several preparation parameters such as fabrication temperature, stirring speed, intensity of the sonication, initial drug ratio, molecular weight ($M_w$) of POX, concentration of POX and concentration of emulsifier has been investigated on the zaltoprofen release profiles. Physicochemical properties and morphology of zaltoprofen loaded POX microspheres were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Through the analyzed results, it was demonstrated that the characteristics of the microspheres greatly affected by the prepared condition. The releases behavior of zaltoprofen was investigated for 10 days in vitro. It was confirmed that the release behavior of zaltoprofen can be controlled by the manufacturing factor of solvent-evaporation/extraction method.
