Ride Quality Investigation of Passenger Cars on Different Road Conditions

  • Objective: The ride qualities of the six passenger cars were evaluated in 4 subjects on the highway and uneven road. The relation between vibration with driving velocity and driving posture were also investigated separately. Background: Ride comfort plays an important role in the vehicle design. Vibration is the one of the principal components associated with ride comfort. Method: The acceleration of the foot, hip and back were measured using B&K accelerometers in this study. The velocity of the passenger cars was maintained at a constant speed of 80km/h on the highway and 40km/h on the uneven road. For evaluating the effects of driving velocity and driving posture on vehicle's vibration level, separate experiments were performed on the highway with 5 different vehicle speeds and 5 different backrest angles, respectively. Results: The overall ride value of the luxury car showed the best result while the smaller car showed the worst value on the highway. On the uneven road the overall ride value level was increased 75~98%. All the vehicles had the SEAT value less than 1. Faster the velocity lowers the SEAT value. The ride quality in terms of vibration gets worst when the backrest angle increased. Conclusion: The smaller car had a first mode at the higher frequency and showed higher vibration level. SEAT value was mostly affected by the seat property not by vehicle. We ranked the luxury car seat had a best vibration reduction quality than others based on SEAT values. When the driving velocity increased, the overall ride values were increased proportionally and the SEAT values were somewhat decreased. The Relationship between Subjective Driving Workload and Effects of PG Technology (주관적 운전부하 수준과 PG기법 적용효과의 관계)

  • The main objective of this study is two-fold: 1) to analyze the effect of PG technology application on road user's satisfaction and driving speed, and 2) to investigate the relationship between driver's subjective workload level and their reactions related to the PG technology application. Based on the result of field observation, the experimental scenario for driving simulation study was prepared. The experimental results showed that drivers were more satisfied to the road condition with PG technology applied, and even the pattern of speed reduction was more stable than control condition. The pattern of speed reduction along driver's subjective driving workload level were slightly different by physical road condition, and road user's satisfaction was revealed to be negatively correlated with their subjective driving workload level. This result indicates that depending on situation and driver characteristic, information for the drivers could be nothing more than nuisance that just distracts drivers. In order to facilitate the implementation of PG technology in Korea, further study on related human factors, especially for those who are weak in traffic situations, is recommended.

Development of a Tractive Performance Prediction Program of Tractors (트랙터의 견인성능 예측 프로그램 개발)

  • In this study, we developed a simulation program for the prediction of tractive performance of a tractor, by applying a widely used empirical model for tractive performance prediction of single tire, Brixius. The tractive performance prediction program can readily predict and estimate tractive performance according to various soil conditions and different specifications of tractors. The program was developed with the considerations of tractor's specification-related parameters (e.g., weight, tire size, and wheelbase of the tractor), a soil parameter (i.e., cone index which represents the soil strength), and operating conditions of the tractor (e.g., theoretical speed and driving types such as 2WD and 4WD). Also, the program was designed to provide tractive performance prediction results of tractors such as gross traction, motion resistance, net traction, and tractive efficiency, in the form of not only numerical values but also graphical visualization. To evaluate the feasibility of the program, we input three different soil conditions (which have different cone indexes each other) and tractor operating conditions to the program and analyzed the tractive performance from each input condition. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the developed program can be effectively utilized to predict the tractive performance under various soil conditions and driving types of tractors with different specifications.

Comparative Study of Different Drive-train Driving Performances for the Input Split Type Hybrid Electric Vehicle (입력분기방식 하이브리드 전기자동차의 구동계 구조에 따른 동력 성능 비교 분석)

  • In this study, the performances of five input split type hybrid electric vehicle sub-drivetrains were analyzed. The five sub-drivetrains consist of chain, helical gears and planetary gears. For the analyzing above five sub-drivetrains, the mathematical equations were derived. From the analysis, we found that the sub-drivetrain with chain shows slower acceleration performance and larger energy consumption on the city driving. And, the sub-drivetrain with only helical gear shows smallest energy consumption on the city driving. If the sub-drivetrain can change its gear speed, it shows fastest acceleration performance, but it has largest energy consumption on the city driving due to its additional auxiliary components.

  • TFT-LCD is widely used for flat panel display. The large-size TFT-LCD panel requires a high speed driving and various driving methods because of signal delay, which is responsible for the shading effects. In this work, the floating and double driving methods are applied to Pixel Design Array Simulation Tool(PDAST) and the pixel characteristics of TFT-LCD array is simulated. Also, we have implemented the semi-empirical TFT model to PDAST, which makes to obtain a more accurate pixel characteristics.

  • The capability of high pressure injection with small fuel quantify at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature in common rail fuel injection system, which is used in small and light-duty Diesel engine. The key parameter for the better atomized fuel sprays and multiple injections of this common rail fuel injection control, that can be freely selected irrespective of the engine speed and load is the mechanism controlling the needle energizing and movement in high pressure Diesel injector. In the electro-hydraulic injector, the injection nozzle is being opened and closed by movement of the injector's needle which is balanced by pressure between the nozzle seat and the needle control chamber. This study describes the macroscopic spray structure characteristics of the common rail Diesel injectors with different electric driving method i.e. the solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type. The macroscopic spray characteristics such as spray tip speed. spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated by the high speed spray, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for the high speed temporal photography in a constant volume chamber pressurized by nitrogen gas. As the results, the prototype piezo-driven injector system was designed and fabricated for the first time in domestic case and the effect of injector's needle response driven by different drive type was compared between the solenoid and piezo-driven injector It was found therefore. that the piezo-driven injector showed faster needle response and had better needle control capability by altering the electric input value than the solenoid-driven injector.

Differences in Driver's Longitudinal Vehicle Control, Subjective Fatigue, and Perceived Fidelity in 2D and 3D Display Driving Simulation (2D와 3D 디스플레이로 구현된 운전 시뮬레이션에서 운전자의 종적 차량통제 수행, 주관적 피로감 및 지각된 현실감의 차이)

  • In this study, drivers' longitudinal car control, subjective fatigue, and perceived fidelity were compared between 2D and 3D display driving simulation. The results can be summarized as followings. First, in all target speed conditions, the drivers tended to drove faster in 2D display condition than 3D display condition. Second, speed deviation from target speed increased as target speed decreased. Third, distances between the lead vehicle and the driver's vehicle were significantly reduced in the 3D display condition when the speeds of the lead vehicle were relatively fast(i. e., over 80km/h). Fourth, although the perceived fidelity was not significantly different between the two display conditions, subjective fatigue was higher in the 3D display condition than in the 2D display condition.

Driving Behaviors of the Korean People: A Cultural Psychological Perspective (한국사회의 교통문화)

  • The present authors had conducted several researches(parking violation, traffic signal violation, speed violation, drunk-driving) on driving behaviors of the Korean people focused on cultural psychological perspective. This paper was designed to summarize these previous results. Although each research had dealt with different violation behaviors on driving, there were lots of similarities on the basis of violation. The results reveal the following rationale for incurring violation behaviors. First, most people reported that they violated the rule to pursuit short-term benefit. Second, the violators' psychological characteristics are described in terms of self-centered and self-justification. In addition, the respondents have justified their violated behaviors since the outcome is disadvantageous for the drivers. Furthermore, the violators' are found to possess a permissive attitude toward the other violators'. Finally, the implications of these studies were proposed. All of these findings were discussed in relation to the Korean culture.

Effectiveness and Characteristics Analysis of Inertia Driving on Fuel-Cut Zones in Urban Highway (도시부도로 연료차단구역의 관성주행 특성 및 효과분석)

  • In this study, the effects of inertial driving on a fuel-cut zone were analyzed by measuring the instantaneous variations of fuel consumption and speed. Thirteen sites with 2-8% downhill slopes were selected for the vehicle experiments. The vehicles were driven on the sites in two different driving modes, and the various vehicle states were measured using OBD under driving. For the analysis of the effects of inertial driving, the characteristics of fuel consumption, speed, and rpm were compared between normal and inertial driving. As a result, the fuel consumption was reduced from 24% to 78% according to the downhill grade. The amount of fuel consumption reduction was about 30cc for driving 500m downhill. Fuel cost savings amounting to 35 billion won can be achieved if inertial driving will be done in the case of Munemi-ro3. It is also believed that the reduced fuel consumption and vehicle speed through inertial driving will have considerable environmental and safety benefits.

On-Road Driving Performance Analysis of Diesel-Hybrid Bus in Daegu Metropolitan Area (대구지역 디젤하이브리드 버스의 실도로 주행 성능 분석)

  • In this study we analyzed the on-road driving performance of two parallel-type diesel-hybrid buses which have been driven in Daegu metropolitan area. A real-time on-board data logger was facilitated to measure the vehicle information such as vehicle speed, idle stop, state of charge of battery, and engine operating conditions. These diesel-hybrid buses ran as a commuter at Daegu Exco area and Dalsung industrial complex. The driving pattern in Exco area comprised more frequent idle stop and relatively lower speed than at Dalsung area, where comprised no idle stop. Due to those different driving patterns, the fuel economy at Dalsung showed $3.7\;km/{\ell}$, which is about 8% higher than that of Exco. The main causes of this come from the higher portion of regenerative braking and higher speed which moves to the operating points of diesel engine with a lower fuel consumption.
