Using the ray optics technique, we derive the analytic expressions of TE mode coupling coefficient for five-layer distributed feedback (DFB) structure devices. We compare the coupling coefficient calculated by the ray optics technique with those calulated by the extended additional layer method (EALM) which may be a most accurate method of calculating the coupling coefficient. The difference between the results of the ray optics technique and those of the EALM is small for most cases of grating depth and forms being practically made. In the case of rectangular gratings, the difference increases as the duty cycle of graing deviates from 0.5. In the case of the trapezoidal grating, the difference increases as the ratio of the top to the period of grating deviates from 0.5 and as the length of the top becomes longer than that of the base. The difference of theree-layer DFB structures is smaller than that of five-layer DFB structures.
To investigate the effect of sample size on coefficient of consolidation of non-homogeneous soil, the result of a large size consolidation test using a huge undisturbed sample with $1200mm(D){\times}2000mm(H)$ in dimension is compared with that of oedometer test using undisturbed small sample. In addition, test results are compared with those of same test using remold sample. Experimental results show that, due to the lump of sand/silt was mixed in sample, the coefficient of consolidation of undisturbed samples have a difference for each tests. Whereas, the difference of coefficient of consolidation between remolded large and small samples is not found. Because sample size affects the test results, sample must be carefully selected for non-homogeneous soil.

Numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, governing 2-dimensional, time-dependent, viscous, incompressible fluid flow past a square cylinde in an infinite region, are presented for Reynolds numbers $10^2$, $10^3$and $10^4$. Finite-difference scheme, based on SOLA-VOF is adopted and a discretization of the convection term for irregular grid is newly suggested by altering the original nonconservation form into conservation one. Distribution of finer grids around the body reveals fairly reasonable consistency with the experimental variables : drag coefficient, lift coefficient, Strouhal number, fluctuating pressure coefficient, etc.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate how to detect proximal caries using line profile and validate linear measurements of proximal caries lesions by basic digital manipulation of radiographic images. Materials and Methods : The X-ray images of control group (15) and caries teeth (15) from patients were used. For each image, the line profile at the proximal caries-susceptible zone was calculated. To evaluate the contrast as a function of line profile to detect proximal caries, a difference coefficient (D) that indicates the relative difference between caries and sound dentin or intact enamel was measured. Results : Mean values of D were $0.0354{\pm}0.0155$ in non-caries and $0.2632{\pm}0.0982$ in caries (p<0.001). Conclusion : The mean values of caries group were higher than non-caries group and there was correlation between proximal dental caries and D. It is demonstrated that the mean value of D from caries group was higher than that of control group. From the result, values of D possess great potentiality as a new detection parameter for proximal dental caries.
A systematic numerical comparative study of the performance of semicircular and rectangular submerged breakwaters interacting with solitary waves is the basis of this paper. To accomplish this task, Nwogu's extended Boussinesq model equations are employed to simulate the interaction of the wave with breakwaters. The finite difference technique has been used to discretize the spatial terms while a fourth-order predictor-corrector method is employed for time discretization in our numerical model. The proposed computational scheme uses a staggered-grid system where the first-order spatial derivatives have been discretized with fourth-order accuracy. For validation purposes, five test cases are considered and numerical results have been successfully compared with the existing analytical and experimental results. The performances of the rectangular and semicircular breakwaters have been examined in terms of the wave reflection, transmission, and dissipation coefficients (RTD coefficients) denoted by KR, KT, KD. The latter coefficient KD emerges due to the non-energy conserving KR and KT. Our computational results and graphical illustrations show that the rectangular breakwater has higher reflection coefficients than semicircular breakwater for a fixed crest height, but as the wave height increases, the two reflection coefficients approach each other. un the other hand, the rectangular breakwater has larger dissipation coefficients compared to that of the semicircular breakwater and the difference between them increases as the height of the crest increases. However, the transmission coefficient for the semicircular breakwater is greater than that of the rectangular breakwater and the difference in their transmission coefficients increases with the crest height. Quantitatively, for rectangular breakwaters the reflection coefficients KR are 5-15% higher while the diffusion coefficients KD are 3-23% higher than that for the semicircular breakwaters, respectively. The transmission coefficients KT for rectangular breakwater shows the better performance up to 2.47% than that for the semicircular breakwaters. Based on our computational results, one may conclude that the rectangular breakwater has a better overall performance than the semicircular breakwater. Although the model equations are non-dissipative, the non-energy conserving transmission and reflection coefficients due to wave-breakwater interactions lead to dissipation type contribution.

This paper presents the results of parametric analyses to compute the axial capacity of a suction pile using 2D and 3D finite element approaches. The study is intended to simplify the process of analyzing suction piles from 3D to 2D model. The research focuses on obtaining the coefficient to be applied into the 2D model in order to obtain results that are as close as possible to the 3D model. Two 2D models were used in the analysis, namely the plane strain and axisymmetric models. The analyses were performed using two actual offshore soil data of the North and West Java Indonesia. The study reveals that the simplification of model through 2D Finite Element is achievable by applying the appropriate coefficient to the stiffness parameters. The results show that the simplified model of the 2D FEA provides more conservative results (with the difference between 2% to 7%) than the 3D FEA.
Friction characteristics of a low-steel friction material were examined to investigate creep groan phenomena. The amount of three ingredients (steel fiber, $ZrSiO_4$, cashew) were changed to produce test specimens using a constrained mixture design. Tribological properties of the friction material specimens were obtained by using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. Results showed that the amount of three different ingredients strongly affected the level of friction coefficient and the difference between the static friction coefficient and the kinetic friction coefficient $({\Delta}{\mu}).\;ZrSiO_4$ and steel fiber tended to increase the average friction coefficient and aggravated the stick-slip phenomena suggesting high creep groan propensity. On the other hand, cashew tended to decrease average friction coefficient and ${\Delta}{\mu}$.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential ability of sintered metal tube to promote heat transfer. In the experiment for Freon - 11, the boiling heat transfer on the sintered metal tube of bronze element is investigated and compared with that of the bronze tube (bare tube) atmospheric pressure. The experimental results are obtained as follows : 1) For sintered metal tubes of bronze element with particle diameters which ranges from $79({\mu})\;to\;461({\mu})$ and bare tube, boiling characteristic curves are expressed as : a) Sintered metal tube $$q{\propto}{\Delta}T^{1.05\~1.373}$$ b) Brae tube $$q{\propto}{\Delta}T^{3.096}$$ 2) Compared with that of the bare tube at low temperature difference$({\Delta}T_{sat})$, boiling heat transfer coefficient of the sintered bronze tube are relatively high. 3) There is tendency that curves of boiling heat transfer coefficients of sintered ·bronze tube and bare tube approach each other at rather high temperature difference. It is due to the increasing rate of the former heat transfer coefficient along with temperature difference is smaller than that of the latter. 4) Referring to particle diameter, optimum condition, i. e. , maximum heat transfer coefficient is found to be at approximately 2 mm thickness of sintered layer with $D_p=150({\mu})$.

In this study, mathematical expressions based upon the conventional BEMT(blade element momentum theory) was applied to basic 100kW wind turbine blade configuration design. Power coefficient and related flow parameters, such as Prandtl's tip loss coefficient, tangential and axial flow induction factors of the wind turbine were analyzed systematically. X-FOIL was used to acquire lift and drag coefficients of the 2-D airfoils and Viterna-Corrigan formula was used o interpolate he aerodynamic characteristics in post-stall region. Also, aerodynamic characteristics, measured in a wind tunnel to calculate he power coefficient was applied. The comparative results such as axial and tangential flow factors, power coefficients were presented in this study. Power coefficient, calculated by in-house code was compared with the GH-Bladed result. The difference of the aerodynamic characteristics caused the difference of the performance characteristics as variation as TSR.
