Effects of Solids Content and Mixing Speed in Treatment of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils using a Bioreactor (고형물함량 및 혼합강도가 생물반응기를 이용한 석유계탄화수소 오염토양의 처리에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of solids content and mixing speed in treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soils using a slurry-phase bioreactor. Performance results on slurry-phase bioremediation of diesel fuel contaminated soil were generated at the bench-scale level. The fate of TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) was evaluated in combination with biological treatment. Abiotic and biotic fate of the TPH were determined using soil not previously exposed to compounds in diesel fuel. The reactor volume for given throughput can be reduced by maximizing the solids content. Applications of 50% and 20% solids content(dry weight basis) were showed a little difference(57.5% : 61.6%) in biological TPH removal rate each other. Mixing and particle suspension are critical to desorption and biological degradation. In this standpoint, this study was performed using two mixing speed. When the reactor was operated at 70rpm, it had a better result in the particle suspension and TPH removal rate than the reactor with mixer rotated at 20rpm. In the reactor applied 20rpm, it was resulted in failure of particle suspension.

A Study on NOx Removal by Using Plasma Discharge (플라즈마 방전을 이용한 NOx 제거에 관한 연구)

  • This work is the experimental study for NO and NOx removal by utilizing non-thermal plasma. To apply to moving pollution source such as diesel automobile, we suggested the metal packed-helical wire reactor(MPHW) and measured properties of MPHW by varying the peak voltage, frequency, NOx concentration and flow rate for simulated NOx gas balanced with $N_2$. And then we compared these results with the results of cylinder-wire(CW) which was one of popularly used reactor in nonthermal plasma applications. The results of MPHW show fairly good NO and NOx removal rate compare with CW around above 20%. However. the power consumption of MPHW is larger than that of CW as much as around 2.5Watt in all range.

  • In this study, the coupled effect of electrokinetic and ultrasonic remediation technology was investigated for removing of heavy metal and organic matter at the same time. The laboratory tests were conducted using specially designed and fabricated electrokinetic and ultrasonic devices. The electrokinetic technique was applied to remove mainly the heavy metal and the ultrasonic technique was applied to remove mainly organic substance in contaminated soil. Diesel fuel and Cd were used as a surrogate contaminant for this test. A series of laboratory experiments involving electrokinetic and electrokinetic+ultrasonic flushing test were carried out. An increase in permeability and contaminant removal rate was observed in electrokinetic+ultrasonic flushing test.

  • In this paper, the effect of magnetic field was measured on NOx removal characteristics for wire-plate plasma reactor with magnetic field applied to electric field vertically. NOx from simulated diesel engine flue gas are decomposed by the corona discharge of DC, AC and Pulsed voltages in wire-plate reactor. Consumption power increased with increasing discharge voltage. When magnetic field was applied to electric field vertically, consumption power decreased. NOx removal rate and arc transition voltage of plasma reactor with magnetic field were higher than those of plasma reactor without magnetic field.

Extraction of Total Petroleum Hydracabons from Petroleum Oil-Contaminated Sandy Soil by Soil Washing (토양 세척법에 의한 유류오염 사질토양의 TPH 추출 효율 평가)

  • The influences of various operating parameters on physico-chemical techniques were evaluated to remediate petroleum-contaminated sandy soil including S/L ratio, kinetic, and effect of soil particle size. The simple extraction using tap water removed only 20.6% of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH), and addition of NaOH enhanced the removal of TPH to approximately 30%. To meet the regulation levels, a surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, was added, and the removal of TPH increased to 4 times. Probably, the carbonate minerals affected chemical aging and soprtion of petroleum, which inhibited the extraction of TPH. The soil with smaller particle size contained more TPH, and the removal of TPH was obstructed with smaller particle size. However, NaOH addition increased the removal of TPH in the smaller particles. The physico-chemical properties of soil influenced greatly the removal of petroleum even in sandy soil.

  • The effects of intake mixture temperature on performance and exhaust emissions under four kinds of engine loads were experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle four-cylinder, swirl chamber type, water-cooled diesel engine with scrubber EGR system operating at three kinds of engine speeds. The purpose of this study is to develop the scrubber exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) control system for reducing $NO_x$ and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce NOx emissions. And a novel diesel soot-removal device with a cylinder-type scrubber which has five water injection nozzles is specially designed and manufactured to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to the intake system of the engine. The influences of cooled EGR and water injection, however, would be included within those of scrubber EGR system. In order to study the effect of intake mixture temperature, a intake mixture heating device which has five heating coils is made of a steel drum. It is found that the specific fuel consumption rate is considerably elevated by the increase of intake mixture temperature, and that NOx emissions are markedly decreased as EGR rates are increased and intake mixture temperature is dropped, while soot emissions are increased with increasing EGR rates and intake mixture temperature.

It is found that intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations are decreased, especially at higher loads. as EGR rate and intake mixture temperature are increased at the same conditions of engine speed and load. and that $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ emissions are decreased. while soot emissions are increased owing to the decrease in intake and exhaust oxygen concentrations and the increase in equivalence ratio. Thus ond can conclude that $\textrm{NO}_{x}$ and soot emissions are considerably influenced by the cooled EGR.

Sorption and Leaching Characteristics of Diesel-Contaminated Soils Treated by Cold Mix Asphalt (Cold Mix Asphalt로 처리한 디젤 오염 토양의 흡착 및 용출특성)

  • A cold mix asphalt (CMA) treatment process was proposed as a tool to recycle soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. Experimental studies were conducted to characterize performances of the CMA process in treating soils contaminated with diesel or diesel compounds. From the screening experiments, it was found that performances of five types of asphalt emulsions that contained a cationic or an anionic or a nonionic surfactant were not substantially different. In consideration of higher affinity for soils and higher sorption coefficients obtained, an emulsion containing Lauryl Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride (LDBAC) was selected as a promising asphalt emulsion for treating diesel-contaminated soils. When the asphalt emulsion LDBAC was applied to treat three compounds that originated from diesel, the removal efficiencies obtained in the order of decreasing efficiencies were as follows: docosane > pentadecane > undecane. Leaching experiments on the specimen formulated by the emulsion LDBAC found that the selected treatment method could treat soils with diesel concentrations as high as 10,000 mg/kg. Leaching of the diesel from the specimen was controlled by diffusion for the first four days and then leaching rate diminished substantially. The latter behavior was characterized as depletion, which represents that the contaminant released amounts to more than $50\%$ of the total amount of the contaminant that can be leached. The amounts of three diesel compounds leached from the specimen in the order of decreasing amount were undecane, pentadecane, and docosane. The curing of the soil contaminated with pentadecane was relatively slow.

Effect of Sawdust Treatment at Oil Contaminated Soil (경유오염 농경지의 톱밥 처리효과)

  • To find out the countermeasure to plant damage at soil contaminated with oil, several adsorbents such as muck, peat, sawdust and PEAT SORB were treated at diesel oil contaminated soil. As the results, sawdust and PEAT SORB showed better effect of oil adsorption than muck and peat. Removal rate of diesel oil with sawdust treatment was higher than 95% at the condition which the ratio of adsorbent amount to oil was higher than 1:2(w/v). And the releasing amount of oil from adsorbent-oil complex was very small. With the oil treatment of $4,000\;L{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at tillering stage, rice plant height and chlorophyll content were lower than control at non-adsorbent treatment, but those were increased at sawdust treatment.
