  • EGR is an efficient method for reduction of NOx from diesel exhaust emission since it is simple to install with low cost and effective in its performance however it has demerits such as incresing wear on the moving parts of engines. stainning intake system and deteriorate lubricating oil. In order to reduce the soot contents in the recirculating gas to intake system of the engine, a proper filtering device was desined and manufactered for experiment system. It is aimed to grasp the characteristics of pollutant emissions including SFC on EGR system equipped with soot removal device.

Phytoremediation of diesel-contaminated soils using alfalfa (Alfalfa를 이용한 디젤오염토양의 phytoremediation)

  • In the past several years phytoremediation, defined as the use of plants for removing contaminants from media such as soils or water, has attracted a great deal of interest as a potentially useful remediation technology We attempted to assess the effectiveness of phytoremediation of diesel-contaminated soils in a green house. Screening test for selecting an appropriate plant was performed by observing the harmful effects of diesel dosage on the growth of 4 plants. Alfalfa was selected as a potentially useful plant among corn and barnyard grasses due to its high tolerance to the toxicity of diesel in growth. Bioremediation of the artificial diesel-contaminated soil packed in the PVC columns(0.3m in diameter $\times$ 1m in length) with air supplied, alfalfa planted, and alfalfa and air supplied was investigated for 100 days. The results of the column test showed plant effects on enhancing the biodegradation of diesel in the contaminated soils compared to the control column which had no plant. Injecting air to the columns during phytoremediation also showed additional effects on the removal rate of diesel. Comparison of microbial activity in each test column showed a beneficial effect of plants in the soil remediation processes. This results can be explained microbial activity in rhizosphere is a crucial factor for removing diesel.

Effect of Magnetic Field on NOX Removal for Wire-Plate Plasma Reactor (선대 평판형 플라즈마 반응기에서 NOX 제거에 미치는 자계의 영향)

  • In this paper, the effect of magnetic field was measured on NOx(NO+NO2) removal and consumption power for wire-plate plasma reactor with magnetic field applied to electric field vertically. NOx of the simulated diesel engine flue gas were removed by the corona discharge generated by DC, AC and Pulsed voltages in wire-plate reactor. Consumption power increased with discharge voltage. However, when magnetic field was applied to electric field vertically, consumption power slightly decreased. NOx removal rate and arc transition voltage for plasma reactor with magnetic field were higher than those for plasma reactor without magnetic field. Consumption power decreased, however NOx removal significantly increased, when water vapour bubbled by dry air was put into simulated flue gas.

Collection characteristics of wet-type multi-staged impaction system for air pollutants removal of marine diesel engines (박용디젤기관의 대기오염 저감을 위한 습식 다단 임팩션 시스템의 집진특성)

  • The main purpose of this paper was to analyze the removal characteristics of gas/particulate phase pollutants for the present system. Experimentally, we performed to estimate the pressure drop and air pollution removal efficiency with physical variables such as stage number, tube velocity, tube diameter, water spray ($NH_4OH$), and so on. It was concluded that the pressure drop was shown below $111mmH_2O$ lower than that of the existing scrubber (centrifugal spray chamber, over 200 mmAq) at inlet velocity 3.46 m/s and 5 stage. The particular removal efficiency of this system was to be significantly higher at 99.8% in comparison with that of the existing scrubber for 5 stage, inlet velocity 3.46 m/s and $NH_4OH$ (aq) 300 mL/min. It was estimated that the removal efficiencies of $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ were 80% and 70% at system inlet velocity 2.07 m/s and $NH_4OH$ (aq) 300 mL/min respectively. Additionally, the present collection system was to be considered as an effective compact system for simultaneous removal of air pollutants (gas/particulate) due to much higher removal efficiency and appropriate pressure drop without a demister.

Oxidative Desulfurization of Marine Diesel Using WOx/SBA-15 Catalyst and Hydrogen Peroxide (WOx/SBA-15 촉매와 과산화수소를 이용한 선박용 경유의 산화 탈황 연구)

  • In this work, tungsten oxide ($WO_x$) supported on SBA-15 (mesoporous silica) were prepared and applied for oxidative desulfurization of sulfur compounds in marine diesel containing about 230 ppmw of sulfur concentration. Prepared catalysts were examined by two steps; at first step, oxidation reaction carried out with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and then the oxidized sulfur compounds were extracted by acetonitrile as solvent. Catalysts were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherms. Tungsten oxide exists as monoclinic crystal system on SBA-15 and over about 10 wt% of the $WO_x$ loading took the form of multi-layers on SBA-15. The 13 wt% $WO_x$/SBA-15 catalyst exhibite highest activity, achieving about 76.3% sulfur removal in the reaction conditions, such as catalyst amount of 0.1 g, reaction temperature at $90^{\circ}C$, reaction time for 3 h and O/S molar ratio of 10. One time oxidation reaction is enough oxidize the sulfur compounds in marine diesel completely. The repetition experiment of extraction process indicated that sulfur removal could reach 94.4% after 5 times.

A Study on the Effect of Recirculated Exhaust Gas with Scrubber EGR System upon Exhaust Emissions in Diesel Engines (디젤기관의 배기 배출물에 미치는 스크러버형 EGR 시스템 재순환 배기의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The effects of recirculated exhaust gas on the characteristics of $NO_x$ and soot emissions under a wide range of engine load have been experimentally investigated by a water-cooled, four-cylinder, indirect injection, four cycle and marine diesel engine operating at two kinds of engine speeds. The simultaneous control of $NO_x$ and soot emissions in diesel engines is targeted in this study. The EGR system is used to reduce $NO_x$ emissions, and a novel diesel soot removal device with a cylinder-type scrubber for the experiment system which has 6 water injectors(A water injector has 144 nozzles in 1.0 mm diameter) is specially designed and manufactured to reduce the soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to intake system of the engines. The intake oxygen concentration and the mean equivalence ratio calculated by the intake air flow and fuel consumption rate, and the exhaust oxygen concentration measured are used to analyse and discuss the influences of EGR rate on $NO_x$ and soot emissions. The experiments are performed at the fixed fuel injection timing of $15.3^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions. It is found that $NO_x$ emissions are decreased and soot emissions are increased owing to the drop of intake oxygen concentration and exhaust oxygen concentration, and the rise of equivalence ratio as the EGR rate rises.

An Experimental Study of Dilution Methods for Preventing Volatile Particle Generation during Measurement of Diesel Particle Number Concentration (디젤 극미세입자 개수 농도 측정시 Volatile Particle 생성을 억제할 수 있는 희석방법에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, Europe decided to start the regulation of diesel engine nanoparticles because of its well known adverse health effects. The diesel nanoparticles can be classified as solid carbon particles and volatile particles. The volatile particles generates during dilution process by condensation of gas phase volatile compounds such as hydrocarbon. The new nanoparticle regulation considers only solid particles because of difficulty of measurement of volatile particles. The aim of this study is to suggest a proper dilution method that prevent the volatile particle generation. As a result, it is found that the $1^{st}$ dilution air temperature should be above $120^{\circ}C$ in order to prevent volatile particle generation effectively. It is also found that the volatile particles can be removed effectively in the evaporation tube by the increase of evaporation tube temperature. But when exhaust gas is hot enough (>$190^{\circ}C$, in this study) and it is diluted in the first diluter with high temperature air (>$120^{\circ}C$), removal phenomenon of volatile particles by increasing of evaporation tube temperature can not be seen. It means that there are no volatile particles in the diluted exhaust gas. Additionally, dilution ratio is not an important factor for volatile particle generation compared with dilution air temperature or evaporation tube temperature.

Novel Compact Current Type Pulse Power Generator

  • This paper proposes a compact pulse generator fur NOx removal application for diesel automotive. The rising time is important factor to increase NOx removal efficiency in pulsed corona discharge method. Manufacturing cost and compactness of the pulse power generator should be satisfied for automotive application. The proposed pulse power uses a low voltage thyristor, a pulse transformer with the function of saturated magnetic switch, and series connected general diodes as opening switch to satisfy that requirements. With 200 resistor load, the experiment results show that the output voltage is 21kV, the rising time is about 21ns, and the pulse width (FWHM) is about 42ns.

  • In the paper, an approach to the development of the selective catalytic reduction process of NOx is presented. The reduction process can be efficiently controlled using a conventional combination of feed-forward and feed-back control structures. The aim of this paper is to test and verify an approach to the SCR process which is based on an industrial pilot plant of combustion and nitric oxide formation. The systems are based on measurements of a NOx removal ratio and the fuel flow rate, and NH$_3$slip which are usually available as a part of de-NOx control system.

Phenanthrene 오염토양의 정화를 위한 동전기-생물학적복원기술의 적용과 전류밀도의 영향

  • Electrokinetic bioremediation was conducted on phenanthrene-contaminated soil to study the effects of soil temperature and pH on microbial population and removal efficiency at different current densities from 0.63 to 3.13 mA cm$^{-2}$ . Microorganism used in the biodegradation of phenanthrene was Sphingomonas sp. 3Y, which was isolated from a diesel-contaminated site. The microorganism was successfully penetrated into the contaminated soil by electrokinetic phenomena and the highest microbial population was observed in the middle region of soil specimen where soil pH was near neutral. Therefore, phenanthrene removal occurred mainly at anode and middle parts of soil specimen due to a relatively high microbial population. Also, the highest removal efficiency of 68.8% was obtained at 1.88 mA cm$^{-2}$ while low degradation was detected at 3.13 mA cm$^{-2}$ . It was presumably because the soil temperature at 1.88 mAcm$^{-2}$ was close to the appropriate temperature of about 30'c while the temperature increase to above 45$^{\circ}C$ at 3.13 mA cm$^{-2}$ inhibited the microbial activity severely.
