  • To develop electrically reliable high voltage apparatuses, the experimental study on the electrical breakdown field strength is needed, as well as theoretical approach. In this paper, lightning impulse breakdown characteristics considering utilization factors are investigated for the establishment of insulation design criteria of an high voltage apparatus. The utilization factors are represented as the ratio of mean electric field to maximum electric field. Dielectric experiments are performed by using five kinds of sphere-plane electrode systems made of stainless steel. As a result, it is found that dielectric characteristics are affected by not only gap length but also utilization factor of electrode systems. The results are expected to be applicable to the design of high voltage apparatuses.

  • Electrical properties of ZnO ceramics based on Bi oxide was investigated in relation to sintering temperature. In the temperature range >$1150^{\circ}C$ to >$1350^{\circ}C$ the grain size increased from 9.mu.m to 20.mu.m when the sintering temperature was raised. The leakage current in the low voltage range increased as the potential barrier decreases, which is caused by increasing the grain size at high temperature. The dielectric characteristics of the ZnO ceramics was also affected by sintering temperature. Large dielectric constant was attributed, to the grainboundary layer of polycrystalline ZnO ceramics and decreasing grainboundary width. The variation of breakdown voltage with sintering temperature was attributed to the change of the donor concentration in the ZnO grain and grain size. The results showed that breakdown voltage increased decreasing grain size and donor concentration. Nonohmic coefficient was associated with the lower breakdown voltage per grainboundary layer due to the grain growth and higher donor concentration.

  • The effect of ribbed spacers having metallic particle attached to the post-type spacer on dielectric breakdown phenomena has been investigated using electric field analysis for imaginary streamer process and a breakdown experiment. It was described that the electric field analysis and the dielectric breakdown test were performed on the case that the particle was attached to the various position of the ribbed spacer having various shapes. As a result, the breakdown voltage of the spacer with two ribs was highest, and it was varied by the length and the thickness of the rib. Especially, in case of the rib with round edge, the breakdown voltage was higher than that with rectangular edge, which complied with the result through the field analysis.

  • The dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) is a common method to create a nonthermal plasma in which electrical energy is used to create electrons with a high average kinetic energy. The unique aspect of dielectric barrier discharges is the large array of short lifetime(10ns) silent discharges created over the surface of the dielectric. A silent discharge is generated when the applied voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the carrier gas creating a conduction path between the applied electrode and grounded electrode. As charge accumulates on the dielectric, the electric field is reduced below the breakdown field of the carrier gas and the silent discharge self terminates preventing the DBD cell from producing a thermal arc. In fact, the most significant application of dielectric barrier discharges is to generate ozone for contaminated water treatment. Therefore, experiments were perfomed at 1∼2[bar] pressure using a coaxial geometry single dielectric barrier discharge for ozone concentrations and energy densities. The main result show that the concentration and efficiency of ozone are influenced by gas nature, gas quantity, gas pressure, supplied voltage and frequency.

  • In recent years, there are a number of studies that have been carried out to explore the alternative for Mineral Oil (MO) as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers due to the increasing tight regulation on safety and environment. Vegetable oils have been identified as suitable candidate since it is biodegradable, non-toxic and high flash/fire points which ensure more in-service safety. Among the types of vegetable oils considered for transformers application are Palm Oil (PO) and Coconut Oil (CO). This paper presents an experimental study on the lightning breakdown voltages of PO and CO under non-uniform electric field based on needle-sphere electrodes configuration at 3 small gap distances. The type of PO used in this study is Refined Bleached and Deodorized Palm Oil (RBDPO) Olein. The main focus of this study is to examine the lightning breakdown performance of RBDPO and CO under different test conditions and assess its suitability as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers. The effect of voltage polarities (positive and negative) and testing methods (rising-voltage, up-and-down and multiple-voltage) were investigated. The data obtained from all tests were analysed by Weibull distribution in order to determine the withstand voltages for each type of oils. It was found that the breakdown voltages of RBDPO and CO are comparable with MO under positive lightning impulse. Under negative lightning impulse, the breakdown voltage of MO is slightly higher than RBDPO and CO. There is no significant effect of testing methods and voltage polarities on lightning breakdown voltages of RBDPO and CO. Based on the statistical analysis, it is found that the breakdown voltages of RBDPO and CO at 1% probability are slightly lower than MO.

  • High voltage superconducting apparatuses have been developed presently around the world under AC and DC sources. In order to improve electrical reliability of superconducting apparatuses with AC and DC networks, a study on the DC as well as the AC electrical breakdown characteristics of cryogenic insulations should be conducted for developing a high voltage superconducting apparatus. Recently, a sub-cooled liquid nitrogen cooling system is known to be promising method for developing a high voltage superconducting apparatus. A sub-cooled liquid nitrogen cooling system uses gaseous nitrogen to control the pressure and enhance the dielectric characteristics. However, the dielectric characteristics of gaseous nitrogen are not enough to satisfy the grade of insulation for a high voltage superconducting apparatus. In this case, the application of solid insulating barriers is regarded as an effective method to reinforce the dielectric characteristics of a high voltage superconducting apparatus. In this paper, it is dealt with a barrier effect on the DC and AC dielectric characteristics of gaseous nitrogen with respect to the position and number of solid insulating barriers. As results, the DC and AC electrical breakdown characteristics by various barrier effects is verified.

  • Mineral oils are commonly used as transformer insulation oils but these oils are obtained from non-renewable and non-sustainable sources, which is highly undesirable. For this reason, natural ester oils are now being used in replacement of mineral oils because of their good biodegradability, high cooling stability, good oxidation stability and excellent insulation performance. Nanotechnology has gained prominence in both academic and industrial fields over the years and it has been shown in previous studies that nanoscale materials are useful for transformers due to their favourable dielectric properties. The objective of this study is to compare the AC breakdown voltage and viscosity of natural ester oil with three types of nanofluids. The natural ester oil-based nanofluids are prepared by mixing palm fatty acid ester (PFAE) oil with three types of nanoparticles at a concentration of 0.01 g/l: (1) $Fe_3O_4$ conductive nanoparticles, (2) $TiO_2$ semi-conductive nanoparticles and (3) $Al_2O_3$ insulating nanoparticles. The AC breakdown voltage of the oil samples is analysed using Weibull statistical analysis and the results reveal that the PFAE oil-based $Fe_3O_4$ nanofluid gives exceptional dielectric performance compared to other oil samples, whereby the AC breakdown voltage increases by 43%. It can be concluded that the PFAE oil-based $Fe_3O_4$ nanofluid is a promising dielectric liquid to substitute mineral oils.

  • As the size of manufacturing equipment for LCD and OLED displays increases, replacement of existing heavy stainless steel components with light metals, such as aluminum alloys, is being more important in semiconducting and display manufacturing industries. To use aluminum alloys for components in semiconducting and display industries, it is important to develop a new anodization method for improved performance of anodic oxide films than conventional anodization method based on sulfuric acid. In this work, optimum applied current density and the best sealing methods for anodic oxide films in 3% oxalic acid were explored. Experimental results showed 2.5 A/dm2 is the best applied current density for improved hardness and dielectric breakdown voltage. Sealing of the anodic oxide films further improved their hardness, dielectric breakdown voltage and resistance to HCl, by which application of anodic oxide films become applicable for components in semiconducting and display industries.

  • In this study the investigation were carried out on short-term breakdown characteristics of the compound material dependent on change of filler quantity, ambient temperature(room temperature~[$190[^{\circ}C$]) and kinds of voltage sources for the compound materials of Bisphenol- A epoxy resins filled with $SiO_2$ particles. As the results, obtained the dielectric breakdown strength generally decrease as increasing the quantity of filler and the distance, spacing of each's particles, decrease as increasing the quantity of filler, when the distance is less than [$7.5\mu\textrm{m}$], dielectric breakdown strength is nearly constant. In the case on AC voltage dielectric strength of filled epoxy resins is stronger than nonfilled epoxy resins on temperature region more than $130[^{\circ}C$].

  • High voltage MLCCs with C0G temperature coefficient characteristics could apply DC-DC invertor were investigated for its dielectric properties. Also we manufactured MLCC through various process and studied the characteristics of dielectric break down voltage [BDV] and dielectric property as the variation of thickness in the green sheet and how to pattern the internal electrode. As the thickness of green sheet is increase, the dielectric BDV per unit thickness is decreased. But as the pattern of internal electrodes were floated we could manufacture the high voltage MLCC maintained its dielectric BDV a unit.
