  • In addition to its similarity to genuine diamond film, diamond-like carbon (DLC) film has many advantages, including its wide band gap and variable refractive index. In this study, DLC films were prepared by the RF PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) method on silicon substrates using methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$) gas. We examined the effects of the RF power on the electrical properties of the DLC films. The films were deposited at several RF powers ranging from 50 to 175 W in steps of 25 W. The leakage current of DLC films increased at higher deposition RF power. And the resistivities of DLC films grown at 50 W and 175 W were $5\times10^{11}$ ${\Omega}cm$ and $2.68\times10^{10}$ ${\Omega}cm$, respectively.

  • Alignment effects for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) and electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the ion beam (IB) aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film surface were studied. A high pretilt angle of 3.5$^{\circ}$ in NLC by ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film layer can be measured. An excellent voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min. Also, a faster response time for the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the DLC thin film surface for 1 min can be achieved.

The films were annealed at temperatures ranging from 300 to $900^{\circ}C$ in steps of $200^{\circ}C$ using RTA equipment in nitrogen ambient. The thickness of the film and interface between film and substrate were observed by surface profiler, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), respectively. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that DLC films were graphitized ($I_D/I_G$, G-peak position and $sp^2/sp^3$ increased) ratio at higher annealing temperature. The variation of surface as a function of annealing treatment was verified by a AFM and contact angle method.

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of environment on the tribological behavior of Si-incorporated diamond-like carbon(Si-DLC) film slid on a steel ball. The films were deposited on Si(100) wafers from radio-frequency glow discharge of mixtures of benzene and dilute silane gases. Experiments using a ball-on-disk test-rig was performed under vacuum, dry air and ambient air conditions. It was observed that coefficient of friction was decreased as the environmental condition changes from vacuum, to dry air. It was also observed that the coefficient of friction decreased with increasing silicon concentration in the film. Chemical analyses of debris suggested that the low and stable friction coefficient is closely related to the silicon rich oxide debris and the rolling action.

  • Diamond-like carbon(DLC) thin films with interlayer were deposited on silicon substrate using a reactive sputtering method. The thermal stability of the films was investigated by annealing the films for 1hr in air in the range of 100 to $500^{\circ}C$. The $I_D/I_G$ ratio increased with increasing temperature as related to the $sp^3-to-sp^2$transition. Accordingly, G-position shifting started from $150^{\circ}C$ in the DLC films and from $270^{\circ}C$ in the a-Si/DLC films. Moreover, in the case of the a-Si/DLC films the film still observed even after annealing at $500^{\circ}C$. The thermal stability of the reactive sputtered DLC films appeared to be improved by the a-Si interlayer.

We examined the effects of the post annealing temperature on the tribological properties of the DLC films using friction force microscopy (FFM). The films were annealed at various temperatures ranging from 300 to $900^{\circ}C$ in steps of $200^{\circ}C$ using RTA equipment in nitrogen ambient. The thickness of the film was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and surface profile analysis. The surface morphology and surface energy of the films were examined using atomic force microscopy and contact angle measurement, respectively. The hardness of the DLC film was measured as a function of the post annealing temperature using a nano-indenter. The tribological characteristics were investigated by atomic force microscopy in FFM mode.

  • Optical and mechanical properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films synthesized by RF plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition were investigated as a function the C/H ratio in gas mixture. The C/H ratio was varied from 6 to 10 %, adjusting the amount of $CH_4$ and $H_2$ as the source gas. The optical and mechanical properties of DLC films were characterized by UV spectrometer, Ellipsometer and Nano-indenter. The change of the C/H ratio during synthesis of DLC films had many effects on the growth rate, transmittance, refractive index and hardness. The growth rate of the films increased exponentially with the increase in C/H ratio. The hardness of the films showed the tendency to improve with increasing C/H ratio, whereas the transmittance decreased. The refractive index was varied from 2.03 to 2.17, and these refractive indexes close to 2.0 indicates that it can be applied to Si-based solar cell.

  • Because of the novel characteristics such as chemical stability, hardness, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity, diamond-like carbon (DLC) film is a suitable material for the passivation layers. For this purpose, using the PECVD, DLC films were synthesized at room temperature. The adhesion and the hardness of the DLC films deposited on Si an SiO2 substrate were measured. The resistivity of 5.3$\times$$10^8$$\Omega$.cm was measured by automatic spreading resistance probe analysis method. The thermal conductivities of different DLC films were measured and compared with that of phospho silicate glass (PSG) film which is commonly used as passivation layers. The thermal conductivity of DLC film was improved by increasing hydrogen flow rate up to 90 sccm and was better than that of PSG film. The patterning techniques of the DLC film developed using the RIE and the lift-off method to form 5$\mu\textrm{m}$ line. Finally, the thermal characteristics of the power transistor with the DLC film as passiviation layer was analyzed.

  • There is an increasing interest in developing novel coating to improve the blood compatibility of medical implants. Diamond-like carbon(DLC) and titanium nitride(TiN) films have been proposed as potential biomedical coatings due to their chemical k physical properties and moderate biocompatibility. To study the correlation between blood compatibility and physical properties of the films, the fibrinogen adsorption on the surface as well as morphology & wettability were investigated. The quantity of fibrinogen adsorption are Tower for TiN than DLC, which correlates with a higher hydrophilicity of TiN film. To reduce the quantity of fibrinogen adsorption on the film, plasma treatment and furnace annealing were performed, respectively. With the use of oxygen plasma and furnace annealing, the amount of fibrinogen adsorption on TiN film was remarkably reduced, while there was no decrease of the quantity with DLC.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) has many outstanding properties such as low friction, high wear resistance and corrosion resistance. However, it is difficult to achieve enough adhesion on the metal substrates because of weak bonding between DLC film and the metal substrate. The purpose of this study is to enhance an adhesion of DLC film. For improving adhesion, the substrate was treated by active screen plasma nitriding before DLC film deposing. Nitrided substrates were investigated by Glow Discharge Spectrometer (GDS), Micro-Vickers Hardness. DLC films were deposited on several metals by linear ion source, and characteristics of the films were investigated using nano-indentation, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). The adhesion was measured by scratch tester. The adhesion of DLC films was increased when nitriding layer was formed before DLC deposition. Therefore, the adhesion of DLC film can be enhanced as increasing the hardness of materials.
