We performed experiments to measure a single-phase upward flow in a 5 × 5 rod bundle with spacer grids using a particle image velocimetry, focusing on the crossflow. The Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter and the bulk velocity is 10,000. The ratio of pitch between rods and rod diameter is 1.4 and spacer grid is installed periodically. The turbulence in the rod bundle results from the combination of a forced mixing and natural mixing. The forced mixing by the spacer grid persists up to 10Dh from the spacer grid, while the natural mixing is attributed to the crossflow between adjacent subchannels. The combined effects contribute to a sinusoidal distribution of the time-averaged stream-wise velocity along the lateral direction, which is relatively weak right behind the spacer grid as well as in the gap. The streamwise and lateral turbulence intensities are stronger right behind the spacer grid and in the gap. Based on these findings, we newly defined a modified mixing coefficient as the ratio of the lateral turbulence intensity to the time-averaged streamwise velocity, which shows a spatial variation. Finally, we compared the developed model with the measured data, which shows a good agreement with each other.
A simple bimodal model has been developed to analyze charged particle coagulation by modifying previously suggested bimdal model for evolution of particle generation and growth. In the present model, two monodisperse modes are used and 40 charge nodes are assigned to each mode to account both change of the particle size and charge distribution. In addition, we also implemented the effect of electrostatic dispersion loss in the present model. Based on the developed model, we analyzed coagulation of asymmetric bipolar charged particles by computing evolutions of particle number concentration, geometric mean diameter of particles, charge asymmetric ratio and geometric standard deviation of particle size distribution for various initial charge asymmetric ratios. The number concentration of asymmetric bipolar charged particles decreases faster than that of neutral particles but that does not give faster growth of particles since the electrostatic dispersion loss overwhelms particle growth by coagulation.

In this paper, we described the unique and novel method to prepare two kinds of electro-active particles, black and white particles with different polarity. The surface of the particles was characterized to be uniform and clean by adopting spray dryer as a tool for genesis of particles; neither surfactants nor high dielectric medium like water was employed during particle preparation step. The other purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that contribute high driving voltage of particlebased display like QR-LPD. We extracted parameters interaction between particle and electrode, and between oppositely charged particles. Here we reported an excellent behavior of particle-based display that showed low operating voltage, high contrast ratio as high as 8:1 without scarification of quick response time. By optimizing the particle size, charge per mass, selection of external additive sets, a lower driving voltage as low as 40V for the particles with $10{\mu}m$ volume average diameter was obtained.
The thermal conductivity of water- and ethylene glycol-based nanofluids containing alumina $(Al_2O_3)$, zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide $(TiO_2)$ nanoparticles is measured by varying the particle diameter and volume fraction. The transient hot-wire method using an anodized tantalum wire for electrical insulation is employed for the measurement. The experimental results show that nanofluids have substantially higher thermal conductivities than those of the base fluid and the ratio of thermal conductivity enhancement increases linearly with the volume fraction. It has been found that the ratio of thermal conductivity enhancement increases with decreasing particle size but no empirical or theoretical correlation can explain the particle-size dependence of the thermal conductivity. This work provides, for the first time to our knowledge, a set of consistent experimental data over a wide range of nanofluid conditions and can therefore serve as a basis for developing theoretical models to predict thermal conduction phenomena in nanofluids.
The objective of the this study is to find the breakage index and changes in permeability of Bottom ash from thermoelectric power plants in Korea. Bottom ash was crushed by compaction according to compaction energy from 0 to $1661.4\;kN/m^2$. The particle size distribution was estimated by sieve analysis. The various breakage indexes were used for analyzing the change in particle size distribution and effect of compaction energy. In the result, breakage indexes were increased as compaction energy and initial upper 4.75 mm diameter ratio, but values and tendencies of breakage indexes appeared in different as calculation method of breakage indexes. The coefficient of permeability was decreased with particle breakage, but decreasing ratio of permeability was very small. Bottom ash has a higher permeability than the weathered soil and it is considered high usability as a permeable materials.
As a case study on aspect ratio behavior, Kaolin, zeolite, $TiO_2$, pozzolan and diatomaceous earth minerals are investigated using wet milling with 0.3 pai media. The grinding process using small media of 0.3 pai is suitable for current work processing applications. Primary particles with average particle size distribution D50, ${\sim}6{\mu}m$ are shifted to submicron size, D50 ${\sim}0.6{\mu}m$, after grinding. Grinding of particles is characterized by various size parameters such as sphericity as geometric shape, equivalent diameter, and average particle size distribution. Herein, we systematically provide an overview of factors affecting the primary particle size reduction. Energy consumption for grinding is determined using classical grinding laws, including Rittinger's and Kick's laws. Submicron size is obtained at maximum frictional shear stress. Alterations in properties of wettability, heat resistance, thermal conductivity, and adhesion increase with increasing particle surface area. In the comparison of the aspect ratio of the submicron powder, the air heat conductivity and the total heat release amount increase 68 % and 2 times, respectively.
As an experiment investigation, the effects of ethanol blended gasoline fuel with different injection method on nano-sized particle emission characteristics were examined in a 0.5L spark-ignited single-cylinder engine with a compression ratio of 10. Because this engine nano-particles are currently attracting interest due to its adverse health effects and their impact on the environments. So a pure gasoline and an ethanol blended gasoline fuels, namely E85 fuel, used for this study. And, as a particle measuring instrument, a fast-response particle spectrometer (DMS 500) with heated sample line was used for continuous measurement of the particle size and number distribution in the size range of 5 to 1000nm (aerodynamic diameter). As this research results, we found that the effect of ethanol blending gasoline caused drastic decrease of nano-particle emissions when port fuel injection was used for making better air-fuel mixture than direct fuel injection. Also injection timing, specially direct fuel injection, could be a dominant factor in controlling the exhaust particle emissions.
Crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate) particles from 2.4 to $8.1{\mu}m$ in diameter were prepared by homogenized suspension polymerization. The effect of polymerization parameters such as homogenizing speed, homogenizing time and stabilizer concentration on the particle size were examined. Optical diffusion films were prepared with the crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate) particles. The effect of film thickness, particle size, and particle size distribution on transmittance and haze of optical diffusion film was examined. Transmittance of optical diffusion film increased with increasing particle size and decreasing film thickness. Haze increased with increasing film thickness and decreasing particle size. We also found the existence of an optimum ratio for optical performance when the mixture of small particle and large particle was used.
We analyzed the movement and response time of charged particles according to particle-inserting methods to understand the variation of quantity of q/m of charged particles, which is a very important factor in electrical and optical characteristics of the charged particle type display, such as lifetime, response time, contrast ratio, reflectivity, etc. For our study we used white and black charged particles of which diameter is $20{\mu}m$, prepared pieces of ITO(indium tin oxide) coated glass substrate, and formed ribs on the glass substrates. The width of a rib is $30{\mu}m$ and the cell size is $220{\mu}m{\times}220{\mu}m$. As the particle-inserting methods, the white and black charged particles were respectively inserted into a front and a rear panel with a very small electric field and also the mixture of the white and black charged particles were inserted into a rear panel. As a result of the driving characteristics of charged particles, the factors about variation of quantity of q/m according to the particle inserting method was experimentally demonstrate, showing very different driving voltage, response time, the particle movement, etc.
