A 7-year-old female, Jindo dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital with mild dyspnea and anorexia due to a gunshot trauma. The dog was wounded in the thoracic region 3 days ago. Plain radiographs showed the left 8th rib fracture, interstitial pattern in the left caudal lung field and pleural effusion. Abdominal radiographs showed the lead bullet. Computed tomographs(CT) showed the size of pulmonary contusion, laceration, lung parenchymal injuries, hemothorax and perforation of abdominal wall. The therapeutic plan was based on abnormalities seen on CT scans but not clearly seen in survey radiographs. Thoracic CT significantly provides even more informations compared with the corresponding radiographs in thoracic gunshot trauma. Although thoracic survey radiographs are useful as a screening tool, CT is highly sensitive in detecting thoracic injuries after thoracic trauma and is superior to routine thoracic survey radiographs in visualizing lung contusion, pneumothorax and hemothorax. Therefore, we recommend CT in the initial diagnostic work-up of patients with thoracic injuries and with suspected chest trauma because early and exact diagnosis of all thoracic injuries along with sufficient therapeutic consequences may reduce complications.

An 8-year-old, neutered female Korean short hair cat was referred with severe vomiting and anorexia. Abdominal mass effect was seen in the cranial abdomen on radiographs, and a mass with a heterogeneous echogenic pattern was observed medial to the right kidney on ultrasonography. On computed tomography, a large mass with soft tissue attenuation and a contrast-enhanced capsule was seen. In histopathological findings, the acinar structures were lined with irregular cuboidal cells that have pale eosinophilic cytoplasm and round to oval nuclei. Based on these diagnostic imaging and histopathological findings, the mass was diagnosed as pancreatic exocrine adenocarcinoma.
Since the diagnosis of malignancy and benign of thyroid gland diseases is difficult only by using ultrasonogram opinions, the combination of fine needle aspiration (FNA) has been generalized trend for precise pathological diagnosis. Therefore, the current study aimed to know about its availability. The study subjected 500 patients who received the FNA along with the ultrasonogram screening for thyroid gland from October, 2007 to April, 2008. As the equipments for the study, Philips HDI-3500 and Philips UITRAMARKer-9 (UM-9) were used to conduct the comparative analysis of pathological results that were obtained through the inspection of ultrasonogram screening and through ultrasonogram guided FNA. Among the 464 patients who were found to be benign from the ultrasonogram screening inspection, II cases of the FNA diagnosis results judged to be malignancy, and 13 cases of the FNA diagnosis resulted to be benign among 36 patients who were diagnosed to be malignancy. The cases observed as solid from the opinions of ultrasonogram screening were often found to be malignancy, and most of the malignancy results were observed to show the hypoechoic pattern. Among the patients diagnosed with malignancy from the diagnosis of FNA, the 32 patients were found to have the papillary carcinoma, and the benign type was observed to be goiter and hyperplasia in 263 patients, which took up 52.6%. The ultrasonogram screening test that is performed for the purpose of diagnosing thyroid gland diseases, it is distinctively an useful inspection to diagnosis the presence, size and shape of nodules. However, the results of performing of FNA for those of nodules which were observed to be benign from the ultrasonogram were often came up with malignancy and there were cases that the nodules diagnosed with malignancy were diagnosed as benign from the FNA diagnosis.

The morphology of plants and scanning electro-microscopical features of fruits were examined to evaluate the taxonomic entities of Korean Adonis L. in sensu lato (Ranunculaceae). The species of Korean Adonis were readily diagnosed by the branching pattern of stem, the number of flowers, the bifurcation of leaf main axis, the number of tepals, the flowering periods in relation to leaf sprouting, and the number of stomata and the texture of fruit surface. This study demonstrates that there are three species, A. amurensis, A. pseudoamurensis, and A. multiflora., found in Korea. However, A. ramosa, which has been often claimed to be distributed in Korea, is not present in Korea.
Adenoviral vectors are among the most promising vectors available for human gene therapy. However, the use of recombinant adenoviral vectors, including replicationcompetent adenovirus (RCA), raises a variety of safety concerns in relation to the development of new therapies based on gene therapy. To examine how organic compounds change in rat plasma following the injection of adenovirus, $\beta$-galactosidase expressing recombinant adenovirus (designated rAdLacZ) or RCA, we investigated the content of fatty acids (FAs), which are important biochemical indicators in pathological conditions. Pattern recognition analysis on the level of FAs in rat plasma is described for the visual discrimination of adenovirus infection groups from normal controls. Plasma FAs from four control rats (normal group), and from four rats with rAdLacZ infection and six rats with RCA infection (the two abnormal groups), were examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in selected ion monitoring modes as their tert-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives. In total, 20 FAs were positively detected and quantified. The results of the Student's t-test on the normal mean of two abnormal groups, the levels of three FAs (p<0.05) from rAdLacZ group and eleven FAs (p<0.05) from RCA group were significantly different. When star symbol plotting was applied to the group mean values of 20 FAs after normalization to the corresponding normal mean values, the resulting eicosagonal star patterns of the two infected groups were distorted into similar shapes, but were distinguishable from each other. Thus, these approaches will be useful for screening and monitoring of diagnostic markers for the effects of infection following the use of adenoviral vectors in gene therapy.
Granulocytic sarcoma is a rare extramedullary tumor composed of immature granulocytic precursors. Usually, granulocytic sarcoma is seen in association with acute myeloid leukemia, or other myeloproliferative disorders. Rarely, it may manifest as a primary presentation before the onset of systemic disease in acute myeloid leukemia. The clinical suspicion of granulocytic sarcoma based on imaging findings is important for the management of the patient especially when systemic disease of acute myeloid leukemia is not confirmed as in our case. We report the MR findings of a granulocytic sarcoma in the left leg mimicking hemorrhagic abscess in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia. We believe that MRI can be a helpful diagnostic method of making a differential diagnosis of granulocytic sarcoma in a patient with leukemia, and this can be done by analyzing the signal intensity and the enhancement pattern.
The morphological variation was analysed to examine previous hypotheses on the taxonomy of B. amurensis complex which includes B. amurensis Rupr. var. amurensis, B. amurensis var. quelpaertensis (Nakai) Nakai and B. amurensis var. latifolia Nakai. The results from the univariational and principal components analyses employing 22 putatively diagnostic characters indicate that B. amurensis var. quelpaertensis is distinct from var. amurensis in the length and width of leaves, angle of leaf apex, distance between spinose teeth, length of internode, number of flowers per inflorescence, whereas B. amurensis var. latifolia is different from other varieties in the angle of leaf apex and leaf length/width ratio. In principal component analysis, the characters of the leaf including leaf width and length were the main characteristics to distinguish those three taxa. The evidence both from the principal components analyses and current geographical distribution pattern suggest that retaining the varietal status for the two taxa, B. amurensis var. latifolia and B. amurensis var. quelpaertensis is reasonable.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small RNA molecules best known for their function in post-transcriptional gene regulation. Immunologically, miRNA regulates the differentiation and function of immune cells and its malfunction contributes to the development of various autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Over the last decade, accumulating researches provide evidence for the connection between dysregulated miRNA network and autoimmunity. Interruption of miRNA biogenesis machinery contributes to the abnormal T and B cell development and particularly a reduced suppressive function of regulatory T cells, leading to systemic autoimmune diseases. Additionally, multiple factors under autoimmune conditions interfere with miRNA generation via key miRNA processing enzymes, thus further skewing the miRNA expression profile. Indeed, several independent miRNA profiling studies reported significant differences between SLE patients and healthy controls. Despite the lack of a consistent expression pattern on individual dysregulated miRNAs in SLE among these studies, the aberrant expression of distinct groups of miRNAs causes overlapping functional outcomes including perturbed type I interferon signalling cascade, DNA hypomethylation and hyperactivation of T and B cells. The impact of specific miRNA-mediated regulation on function of major immune cells in lupus is also discussed. Although research on the clinical application of miRNAs is still immature, through an integrated approach with advances in next generation sequencing, novel tools in bioinformatics database analysis and new in vitro and in vivo models for functional evaluation, the diagnostic and therapeutic potentials of miRNAs may bring to fruition in the future.
Purpose: To perform a comparative analysis of the palatal bone thickness in Thai patients exhibiting class I malocclusion according to whether they exhibited a normal or open vertical skeletal configuration using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Thirty CBCT images of Thai orthodontic patients (15-30 years of age) exhibiting class I malocclusion with a normal or open vertical skeletal configuration were selected. Palatal bone thickness was measured in a 3.0-mm grid pattern on both the right and left sides. The palatal bone thickness of the normal-bite and open-bite groups was compared using the independent t-test. The level of significance was established at P<.05. Results: The palatal bone thickness in the normal-bite group ranged from $2.2{\pm}1.0mm$ to $12.6{\pm}4.1mm$. The palatal bone thickness in the open-bite group ranged from $1.9{\pm}1.1mm$ to $13.2{\pm}2.3mm$. The palatal bone thickness was lower at almost all sites in patients with open bite than in those with normal bite. Significant differences were found at almost all anteroposterior sites along the 3 most medial sections (3.0, 6.0, and 9.0 mm lateral to the midsagittal plane)(P<.05). Conclusion: Class I malocclusion with open vertical skeletal configuration may affect palatal bone thickness, so the placement of temporary anchorage devices or miniscrew implants in the palatal area in such patients should be performed with caution.
This research was conducted in order to understand the hybridization between Quercus aliena Blume and Q. serrata Murray in Korea which show wide range of morphological variations within species and interspecific variations of diverse overlapping characteristics caused by hybridization. Morphological analysis (principal components analysis; PCA) of 116 individuals representing two species and their intermediates were performed. As a result, two species were clearly distinguished in terms of morphology, and intermediate morpho-types assumed to be hybrids between the two species were mostly located in the middle of each parent species in the plot of the principal components analysis. There was a clear distinction between two species in trichome distribution pattern which is an important diagnostic character in taxonomy of genus Quercus, whereas intermediate morpho-types showed intermediate state between two species' trichome distributions. Forty-two individuals representing two species and their intermediates were examined for leaf flavonoid constituents. Twenty-three flavonoid compounds were isolated and identified: They were glycosylated derivatives of flavonols, kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin and myricetin. The flavonoid constituents of Q. aliena were five glycosylated derivatives: kaempferol 3-O-galactoside, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-galactoside, quercetin 3-O-glucoside, and Isorhamnetin 3-O-glucoside. The flavonoid constituents of Q. serrata had 20 diverse flavonol compounds including five flavonoid compounds found in Q. aliena. It was found that there is a clear difference in flavonoid constituents of Q. aliena and Q. serrata. Flavonoid chemistry is very useful in recognizing each species and putative hybrids. The flavonoid constituents of intermediates were a mixture of the two species' constituents and they generally showed similar characteristics to morpho-types. The hybrids between Q. aliena and Q. serrata showed morphologically and chemically diverse characteristics and it is assumed that there are frequent interspecific hybridization and introgression.
