Purpose: This study explored experiences of diabetes education among educators of diabetes. Methods: Data were collected from individual in-depth interviews with 10 nurses and 2 dieticians with had at least 3 years of experience in diabetes education. Data collection was conducted between May 2014 and February 2015. All interviews were recorded and stored as digital audio files, which were then transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Results: Analysis showed that four categories could be derived from the data: 1) barriers of diabetes education from an educator's perspective, 2) barriers of diabetes education form a patient's perspective, 3) facilitating factors of diabetes education from an educator's perspective, and 4) facilitating factors of diabetes education from a patient's perspective. Conclusion: This study suggests the necessity to strengthen the policy systems and financial support at a national level to provide diabetes education with higher quality to patients. In addition, it is required to develop various diabetes education programs with consideration to patient characteristics.
Objectives: Ongoing, proactive, planned, and patient-centered diabetes education is the cornerstone of care for all persons with diabetes. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the information needs of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients receiving insulin treatment in North-East Ethiopia. Methods: The study was conducted from July 2019 to January 2020 using a qualitative enquiry (phenomenological approach) with purposive sampling. Face-to-face in-depth interviews were used to collect data until reaching theoretical saturation. The participants were type 2 diabetes patients receiving insulin treatment. They were identified from the diabetes patients' registration book at the diabetes clinic and interviewed at their appointment time, and were selected to include wide variations in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. Twenty-four participants (11 men and 13 women), with a median age of 57 years, were interviewed. The data were organized using QDA Miner Lite version 2.0.7 and analyzed thematically using narrative strategies. Results: Most participants had not heard of diabetes before their diagnosis. They had limited knowledge of diabetes, but ascribed different connotations for it in the local language (Amharic). The needs reflections of patients were categorized into diabetes education and participants' recommendations. Diabetes education was totally absent at hospitals, and patients received education primarily from the Ethiopian Diabetes Association and broadcast and digital media. Thus, the major concern of patients was the availability of diabetes education programs at health institutions. Conclusions: Patients' main concern was the absence of routine diabetes education, which necessitates urgent action to implement diabetes education programs, especially at health institutions.
Purpose: This study was to identify the effect of the experience of diabetes education on knowledge, self-care behavior and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C). Further, this study was held to examine about patient's preferred methods of education and re-education frequency. Methods: 166 type 2 diabetes patients from two hospitals in Incheon participated in this study. Data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test and multiple regression analysis. Results: 72.3% patients needed re-education and the average interval of re-education was 8.53 months. Patients preferred education methods were lectures, practical training, and studying from pamphlet. Depending on the frequency of diabetes education, there were significant differences in the level of diabetes knowledge (F=10.88, p<.001) and self-care behaviors (F=4.59, p=.012), but there was not significant difference with HbA1C (F=1.53, p=.220). As to how much the diabetes education helped managing diabetes, there was a significant difference in the level of self-care behaviors (t=2.01, p=.049), but there were not significant differences in level of knowledge (t=1.10, p=.275) and HbA1C (t=-.33, p=.746). The experience of diabetes education was a significant factor which influenced patient's knowledge (t=3.93, p<.001) and self-care behaviors (t=2.21, p<.001). But HbA1C was not influenced by the experience of diabetes education (t=-1.68, p=.096). Conclusion: It is necessary to provide diabetes education with appropriate interval and methods and subjects that reflect the needs of patient through the study results.
Objectives: The purpose of this article was to investigate the current practice of diabetes education along with the specific interventions, process, and outcomes in community health centers in Korea. Methods: Data were collected by a mail questionnaire from September 20, 2012 to December 20, 2012. Among 253, a total of 161 responded, constituting a 63.3% return rate. Results: Primary staff of diabetes education was the nurse and respondents recognized their role largely as a director. More than half of respondents provided education to people with type 2 diabetes by group. Most common service offered was nutrition therapy and the majority of respondents used printed materials. Among 4 criteria of outcomes, eating (nutrition), knowledge scores, blood pressure, and patients' survey on satisfaction were collected most frequently. Nearly three quarters of respondents were not participated in activities for quality improvement and outcomes were not reported properly. Conclusions: The results are able to draw ideas for organizing diabetes education programs and evaluating outcomes in community heath centers. This article has significance that it is the first comprehensive survey of diabetes education practice in community health centers and provides a baseline for establishing national standards of diabetes self-management education.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of nursing education in diabetes patient, and to define the strategy to promote their sick-roll behavior, self efficacy. The quasi-experimental design was designed non-equivalent control group, non-synchronized design. The study had been done by investigating the experimental group and control group through the questionnaire on 58 patients who had been hospitalized and visiting out-patient department in K hospital in Pusan from June 1, 1998 to September 30, 1998. Individual diabetes education was carried out experimental group for the average 45 minutes. Self-efficacy was measured by Diabetes Management Self-efficacy Instrument developed by Park(1984). Data was collected before and after the experimentation. Collected data was analyzed by means of frequency, percentage, chi-square test, mean, standard deviation, and t-test with SPSS/PC program. The results were summarized as follows : 1. 'The experimental group which received the individual diabetes education should be higher in self-efficacy than control group' was not supported. 2. 'The experimental group which received the individual diabetes education should be higher in sick-roll behavior than control group' was not supported(P=.043). In conclusion, the patient who received individual diabetes education showed the increase in degree of sick - roll behavior of diabetes patients. So individual diabetes education had been judged the nursing intervention to improve sick-roll behavior of diabetes patients. But there was no effect about self-efficacy so to have the program which can improve self-efficacy is needed.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effects of diabetes education and telephone counseling on depression in diabetic patients. Methods: 49 diabetic patients(24 in the control group and 25 in the experimental group) completed diabetes education and telephone counseling. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$ test, paired t-test and unpaired t-tests. Results: There were no significant differences in depression between the experimental and control groups. But, Depression scores were much decreased in the experimental group. Conclusion: Depression decreased following the diabetes education and telephone counseling. These findings indicate that diabetes education and telephone counseling could be one of the way to decrease depression.
Diabetes mellitus is the prevalent disease among older adults. The purpose of this study was to implement and evaluate the nutrition education program for diabetes mellitus patients aged 60 and over. The one group pretest and posttest design was employed to evaluate the program effectiveness. Nutrition education program for diabetes mellitus patients was carried out at the public healthy center in Guri city. The 38 out of 63 patients completed education program. They received four sessions of group education during four weeks. Nutrition education materials (booklet, leaflet) for older adults were provided to participants. Data about blood glucose, blood pressure, nutrition and diabetes mellitus knowledge, dietary behavior, dietary intake by 24-hour recalls were collected before and after nutrition education to evaluate the program effectiveness. All data were statistically analyzed using SAS package (ver.8.2) and significant difference was evaluated by $X^2$-test, paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. Study results showed that blood pressure and blood glucose were slightly decreased after nutrition education but they did not reach statistical significance. There were positive changes in nutrition knowledge and dietary behavior. The total score of nutrition and diabetes knowledge increased significantly (p < 0.001), and the total score of dietary behavior was improved (p < 0.05) after nutrition education. Dietary intakes of most of nutrients examined were not significantly different between pre- and post-test. Based on study results, it appears that nutrition education program for the aged diabetes mellitus patients might effectively increase nutrition knowledge, dietary behavior and diet quality. This nutrition education program can be used at the public health centers or senior centers for the management of diabetes mellitus for older adults.
Purpose: This study attempted to describe hospital nurses' pre-diabetes knowledge, performance and expectation of patient. Methods: The total of 204 hospital nurses were administered the questionnaires. The questionnaire comprises general background information (including sex, age, religion, education and career), ten researcher-generated questions regarding knowledge about pre-diabetes, performance of patient education (including how many people encounter in workplace, how often teaching, how many minutes required to teach and course contents) and expectation (including need improvement of teaching, barrier to education and desirable course contents and teaching methods) Results: The average score of hospital nurses' pre-diabetes knowledge was as low as 0.82 (82% correctness). On comparison of the knowledge levels among ten pre-diabetes knowledge dimensions, the highest score was 0.95 for necessary of medical check-up. The lowest score was 0.57 for complication can rarely happen. Significant correlations were observed for education, career and knowledge regarding pre-diabetes. Moreover, 49.5% of the nurses did not instruct patients about pre-diabetes, 24.5% taught prevention skills to a third of the pre-diabetes patients they encountered, and 61.2% nurses disseminated information under 5 minutes. Improvement was necessary for 78 nurses (75.8%). Conclusion: Pre-diabetes awareness among nurses is necessary.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of diabetes and self-care behavior of patients with diabetes mellitus living in rural area. Methods: Participants in this study were 94 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data were collected from July 13 to September 14, 2012. The instruments were the knowledge of diabetes measurement developed by Park Oh Jang and the measurement of self-care behavior for patients with diabetes developed by Kim Young Ok. Data were analyzed using the SPSSWIN 18.0 program for t-test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe test. Results: There were significant differences in knowledge of diabetes according to education level (p=.011), alcohol use (p=.010), regular exercise (p=.046), and duration of illness (p=.045). There were significant differences in self-care behavior of patients with diabetes according to satisfaction with income (p=.031), regular exercise (p<.001), experience with diabetes education (p=.001), number of diabetes education sessions (p<0.001), and complications (p=.001). Conclusion: Based on the result of this study, there is a need to develop and confirm the efficacy of education programs by examining their fit to characteristics of patients with diabetes mellitus living in rural areas.
Purpose: This study aimed to assess the levels of and relationships among health literacy, knowledge about diabetes, and self-care activities in the Korean low-income elderly with diabetes and to identify factors influencing the self-care activities of this vulnerable population. Methods: This study surveyed a total of 151 low-income elderly patients with diabetes registered at 16 Visiting Health Care Services in B City, Korea. Health literacy was measured with the Newest Vital Sign. Diabetes knowledge was measured with the Diabetes Knowledge Test. The Summary of Diabetes Self-care Activities Questionnaire was used to assess diabetes self-care activities. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify significant factors influencing diabetes self-care activities in these patients. Results: In the regression model, diabetes knowledge (${\beta}=.322$, p<.001), exercise (${\beta}=.337$, p<.001), and experiences of diabetes education (${\beta}=.241$, p=.001) were significantly associated with increased diabetes self-care activities in low-income elderly patients with diabetes when gender, education, health literacy, and subjective health state were controlled. Conclusion: To improve diabetes self-care activities in the low-income elderly with diabetes, it is important to develop a customized program considering their knowledge, exercise, and diabetes education experience.
