  • In our present elementary mathematics curriculum, natural numbers are taught by using the a method of one-to-one correspondence or counting operation which are not related to measurement, and fractional numbers are taught by using a method which is partially related to measurement. The most serious limitation of these teaching methods is that natural numbers and fractional numbers are separated. To overcome this limitation, Dewey and Davydov insisted that the natural number and the fractional number should be taught by measurement of quantity. In this article, we suggested a method of teaching the natural number and the fractional number by measurement of quantity based on the claims of Dewey and Davydov, and compare it with our current method. In conclusion, we drew some educational implications of teaching the natural number and the fractional number by measurement of quantity as follows. First, the concepts of the natural number and the fractional number evolve from measurement of quantity. Second, the process of transition from the natural number to the fractional number became to continuous. Third, the natural number, the fractional number, and their lower categories are closely related.

  • This study was carried out with the aim of analyzing the development and functional changes of Webdewey, which has become a basic tool of classification learning, analyzing it in terms of usability for learners, and suggesting specific ways to improve WebDewey's usability. In order to achieve this research objective, the concepts and principles of UI and usability were first laid out, and Webdewey's structure and key functions were analyzed. Since then, Webdewey's media changes and periodical feature changes have been analyzed. In addition, an opinion survey was conducted on the usability of WebDewey among learners who used WebDewey in the learning process, and proposed ways to improve WebDewey's usability based on the implications and direction of improvement derived from it. In terms of UI, proposals have been made to introduce display methods, visualization devices, the advantages of printed versions, and the development of Korean versions. In terms of the 'Create built number' function, suggestions have been made to improve usability in terms of basic number selection, composite route guidance and error message provision, new reference and route construction, screen and button design, and built-number component guidance.

  • This study considers the concept of schools and their spatial composition by John Dewey through literature review who argued for a new, children-centered education in the early 19th century, and it also mentions some suggestions for improvement of the elementary school facilities in Korea that the size and number of students in school has decreased sharply. John Dewey claimed that a school is a big household as well as a small society in which one studies the current occupation and experience in connection between the household-school-society. At the same time, he pursued an organic and open spatial composition which can effectively and efficiently enable educational curriculum's application, social occupation and project learning based on children's native impulse and stage in child growth. Korea's education policy should shift from quantity-based education production to quality-based production due to the reduction of school age population among other reasons. Especially this study emphasizes that small size schools need to be changed to local community facilities with environment-friendly, children-centered and open learning spatial composition with basis on John Dewey's educational philosophy.

  • This paper introduces the development XPERT(XML Query Processing Engine using Relational Technologies) which is based on relational model. In our system we have used a decomposed approach to store XML files in relational tables. XML queries are translated to SQLs according to the table schema, and then they are sent to the relational DBMS to get the results back. Our translation scheme produces AST(Abstract Syntax Tree) by analyzing XQuery expressions at first. And on traversing AST proper SQLs are generated. Translated SQLs can reduce the number of joins by using path information and utilize dewey number to preserve document originated orderings among compoments in XML. In addition we propose the efficient algorithms of XPath and XQuery translation. And finally we show the implementation of our prototype system for the functional evaluations.

  • This study reports the results of an exploratory investigation into building number technique applied by a sample of novice students using Electronic Dewey(ED). For control purposes, a second sample used the same classification schedule but in print format. In this experiment, the DDC 20 in print had a higher success rate than ED. While the searches in ED took shorter time than DDC in print, students using DDC 20 in print were able to build more correct numbers than ED. Novice users did not take full advantage of system features of ED. Therefore, it is important to note the overall difficulty with which users could build numbers from the ED after little training. However, it is interesting to note that the students in the CD-ROM group were more interested in building numbers than their colleagues in the Print group. The correlation between the grade of English course and the score in experiment was negative in Print group. And the correlation between GPA and the score in experiment was a little positive. The correlation between the time and the score in experiment was quitenegative.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the edition of 21 of the Dewey Decimal Classificatin. Edition 21 includes major revisions of three schedules : 350-354 Public administration, 370 Education, and 560-590 Life sciences. The aim of Edition 21 was user convenience, Regularization, Faceting, Terminology, International needs and Cooperative development and Changes in the database. The Dewey Decimal Classification is preparing for the future in a number of ways. Editorial work is supported by a UNIX-based system and access to online bibliographic databases. Two edition of Electronic Dewey have been published and a Windows version have been published.

  • In this article, I identified many points of commonness and differences at)feared in the fraction units of three conspicuous textbooks -McLellan, MiC and Korea. After that, 1 evaluated these results with reference to more general didactics on which each text-book is based. A background theory of Mc-Lellan's textbook was Dewey's experientialism, and that of MiC was Freudenthal's realistic mathematics education. Through this study, I have reached the fact that these three textbooks could not exhibit the phenomenological wholeness of fraction. Driven by measuring number model which is very abstractive, McLellan's text-book is disregarding the lower level context. MiC textbook, driven by real context, is ignoring higher level model which is close to rational number concept. From an excess of formulation and practice of algorithm, Korea's textbook is overlooking the real context. It is necessary that a textbook which would display the phenomenological wholeness of fraction is developed.

  • This paper describes qualities of a library classification system that are commonly discussed in the LIS tradition and literature, and explains such a system’s three main functions, namely knowledge mapping, information retrieval, and shelf arrangement. In this vein, the paper states the functional requirements of bibliographic classifications, which broadly are subject collocation and facilitation of browsing the collection. It explains with details the components of a library classification system and their functions. The major components are schedules, notations, and index. It also states their distinguished features, such as generalia class, form divisions, book numbers, and devices for number synthesis which are not required in a knowledge classification. It illustrates with examples from the WebDewey good examples of added features of an online library classification system. It emphasizes that institutional backup and a revision machinery are essential for a classification to survive and remain relevant in the print and e-environment.

  • Recently, requriements that people want to receive various information related with fashion are increasing. A lot of internet shopping malls and corporations provide information about fashion. However, those systems do not give enough information about fashion. To solve these problems, the paper provides the recommend technique for providing complex fashion information on mobile devices. The providing system implements fasion ontology by using XML. The XML ontology has dewey number as an attribute. The recommend technique uses this number and find LCA(Lowest Common Ancestor) on the fashion ontology. Then those child nodes under the LCA are recommended as related information. The results are displayed on the mobile browser. The system provides function for taking a picture or movie of fashion contents. Those movies and pictures are UCC(User Created Content)s. The system is a novel system that can recommend complex fasion information on mobile devices.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the structural model of classification, to compare enumerative schemes with faceted schemes and finding the facted schems used in the Dewey Decimal Classification. The Structural model of classifications can be divided to enumerrative schemes and facted schemes(analytico-synthetic schemes). Enumerative schemes represent the various kind of subject in different ways and have to not only list all existing combinations of subjects but also any of potential subjects. Faceted schemes is the decomposition of concepts into all possible characteristics which are known as facets. DDC was originally created as enumerative, but over 20 editions has moved increasing towards synthetic features such as the add instructions, and the seven auxiliary tables. Many DDC class numbers found in the Schedules may be subdivied by another number(or part of it) that has been drawn from the Schedules or auxiliary tables. This process of subdividing class numbers is called number building and it can be done only when there are number building instruction in the Schedules or Tables.
