  • The PCI 2.2 spec introduces Delayed Transaction mechanism to improve system performance for target device with slow local bus. But this mechanism has some restriction since target device doesn't know prefetch data size. So, we propose a new mechanism, which target device prefetch exact data on local bus, to improve data rate on PCI or local interface. The simulation results showed that the proposed mechanism more improves system performance than the Delayed Transaction mechanism.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the performance of the active damper device by feedback variables. The damper is a mass-typed active device, which exerts the inertia control force on the building by AC servo motor. The control performance is experimentally analyzed considering the building response and the control force. It is found that the building response is greatly reduced by mass-typed device under the resonant and earthquake loading. Also, the experimental results show that the velocity feedback reduces the building responses with the smallest amount of control force than any other feedback variables.

  • This paper describes a modification to the SACK (Selective Acknowledgement) Transmission Control Protocol's (TCP), called SACK TCP with Probing Device, SACK works in conjunction with Probing Device, for improving SACK TCP performance when more than half a window of data lost that is typical in handoff as well as unreliable media. It shows that by slightly modifying the congestion control mechanism of the SACK TCP, it can be made to better performance to multiple packets lost from one window of data.

  • Recently, on-device artificial intelligence (AI) solutions using mobile devices and embedded edge devices have emerged in various fields, such as computer vision, to address network traffic burdens, low-energy operations, and security problems. Although vision transformer deep learning models have outperformed conventional convolutional neural network (CNN) models in computer vision, they require more computations and parameters than CNN models. Thus, they are not directly applicable to embedded edge devices with limited hardware resources. Many researchers have proposed various model compression methods or lightweight architectures for vision transformers; however, there are only a few studies evaluating the effects of model compression techniques of vision transformers on performance. Regarding this problem, this paper presents a performance evaluation of vision transformers on embedded platforms. We investigated the behaviors of three vision transformers: DeiT, LeViT, and MobileViT. Each model performance was evaluated by accuracy and inference time on edge devices using the ImageNet dataset. We assessed the effects of the quantization method applied to the models on latency enhancement and accuracy degradation by profiling the proportion of response time occupied by major operations. In addition, we evaluated the performance of each model on GPU and EdgeTPU-based edge devices. In our experimental results, LeViT showed the best performance in CPU-based edge devices, and DeiT-small showed the highest performance improvement in GPU-based edge devices. In addition, only MobileViT models showed performance improvement on EdgeTPU. Summarizing the analysis results through profiling, the degree of performance improvement of each vision transformer model was highly dependent on the proportion of parts that could be optimized in the target edge device. In summary, to apply vision transformers to on-device AI solutions, either proper operation composition and optimizations specific to target edge devices must be considered.

  • Metamorphic HEMTs (MHEMTs) have emerged as excellent challenges for the design and fabrication of high-speed HEMTs for millimeter-wave applications. Some of improvements result from improved mobility and larger conduction band discontinuity in the channel, leading to more efficient modulation doping, better confinement, and better device performance compared with conventional pseudomorphic HEMTs (PHEMTs). For the optimized device design and development, we have performed the calibration on the DC characteristics of our fabricated 0.1 ${\mu}m$ ${\Gamma}$-gate MHEMT device having the modulation-doped $In_{0.52}Al_{0.48}As/In_{0.53}Ga_{0.47}$As heterostructure on the GaAs wafer using the hydrodynamic transport model of a commercial 2D ISE-DESSIS device simulator. The well-calibrated device simulation shows very good agreement with the DC characteristic of the 0.1 ${\mu}m$ ${\Gamma}$-gate MHEMT device. We expect that our calibration result can help design over-100-GHz MHEMT devices for better device performance.

  • This paper presents the performance improvement of an EQS (Eradic Quake System) device applied to a nuclear power plant. For the nuclear facility, the EQS device needs to be ensured to have high quality, flexibility of design and reliability. To improve the reliability of the design, the hysteresis of the device must be exactly predicted. The friction coefficient of PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene) and the stiffness of the MER-Spring are considered as the factors influencing the hysteresis curve. In this paper, those factors are analysed to predict the behavior of the device and to improve the equipment of the EQS device. The results of the improved EQS device have been verified via a tests to be comparable with the predicted results. The estimation results indicate that considering those factors is more appropriate than the results of the previous design and method.

  • A seedling pick-up device for vegetable transplanters was developed and its work performance was evaluated at the laboratory. The pick-up device extracts seedlings from a 200-cell tray of seedlings and transfers them to the place where they are to be transplanted into the soil. The device consists of a path generator, pick-up pins and a pin driver. The path generator is a five-bar mechanism comprised of a fixed link, a driving link, a driven link, a connecting link and a slider. The slider is constrained to move along the driven link and a fixed slot of combined straight-line and circular paths. The connecting link joins the driving link and the slider. When the slider moves along the straight-line path of the slot it takes seedlings out from the cell and transfers them to the transplanting hopper when moving along the circular path. A proto-type of the pick-up device was built and tested under the various operational conditions such as age of seedling, approach direction and penetration depth of pins to the cell, holding method of seedling and extracting velocity. The device extracted 30 seedlings per minute with the maximum success ratio of 97% using the seedlings of 23 days old. Some design details were also discussed and suggested to enhance the performance of the device.

  • Interoperability is an important requirement of portable storage devices that are used to exchange and share data among diverse hosts. However, the required interoperability cannot be provided if different host systems use different file systems. To address this problem, we propose a new type of storage device called FSOC(File System On a Chip) that contains the file system within the storage device. In this paper, we give an example of the design and implementation of a flash memory-based FSOC and propose the performance models of the conventional storage device and the FSOC. We also analyze the performance characteristics of the conventional storage device and the FSOC based on the proposed performance models, and provide several experimental results using real applications that validate the performance models.

  • A remote drum grappling device coupled to the anti-swing crane has been developed by KAERI to cope with problems involved in manually treating low level waste drums. In order for this grappling device to be operated effectively, multi-sensors including CCD camera were employed. As an activity representation scheme of the device, Extended State Machine (ESM) was used to descibe its operation sequences. The performance testing of the device was conducted successfully, and consequently its application could be extendable to industrial operation environment.
