Background: Dental hygienists undergo 3 or 4 years of college education, and dental hygienist education must receive continuous feedback through evaluation. The purpose of this study was to compare the educational performance of students from the Department of Dental Hygiene in 2018 with those from other departments in the healthcare field. Methods: We used data from the National Assessment of Student Engagement in Learning, conducted by the Korean Educational Development Institute in 2018. The survey data of 55 dental hygiene students and 60 healthcare students at K University were provided after excluding all identifying information. An independent t-test was used for comparisons between the Department of Dental Hygiene and other healthcare departments. Results: Regarding class-related activities, dental hygiene students were passive in presentations, discussions, and projects and had significantly lower grades in cooperative learning and challenging learning. Regarding extra-class activities, dental hygiene students had significantly lower global learning and external experiences, domestic experiences, club activities, and interactions with professors. Regarding learning outcomes, students had significantly lower grades in writing, speaking, critical and analytical thinking, data evaluation, understanding of data meaning, problem-solving ability, goal setting and execution, core content extraction, human and material resource utilization, creative convergence thinking, statistical understanding and analysis, information technology use, collaboration, sense of community, stress management, time management, and foreign language proficiency. Conclusions: Dental hygiene education requires innovation in educational methods and efforts of instructors to improve poor learning activities and outcomes.
Objectives: Extended reality technology offers an innovative opportunity to enhance self-directed learning through interactive processes in healthcare education. This study aims to analyze research trends in the application of extended reality technology-based educational content in the field of healthcare. Methods: Through literature search, selection, and exclusion processes based on predefined criteria, we conducted an analysis of domestic healthcare studies employing extended reality technology, ultimately selecting and examining 39 relevant publications. Results: The analysis reveals diverse applications of extended reality across various fields such as medicine, dentistry, and nursing. Positive effects, including increased academic satisfaction, immersion, and interest, are observed, alongside challenges like media usage difficulties and cybersickness. Conclusions: Future research should focus on the development and application of extended reality-based educational content in diverse healthcare curricula, emphasizing both educational approaches and continuous technological advancements.
Objectives: This study aimed to develop human rights indicators through reliability and validity tests in order to measure the human rights situation of dental hygiene students who experience clinical practice at dental clincs. Methods: The basic framework of questions was constructed through literature review. Nine experts were tested for validity of the contents of the experts twice. The main survey was conducted on 121 students in the 3rd and 4th grade who were enrolled in the department of dental hygiene located in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gangwon-do. Validity was tested through exploratory factor analysis, and reliability was tested through internal reliability coefficient and test-retest method. Results: The cronbach's α value was 0.734, and the Kappa coefficient was 0.584. The result of the reliability and validity test was composed of 11 questions and 3 factors. Conclusions: During the practice of a dental institution, the validity and reliability of the indicators that can grasp the human rights status of dental hygiene students were tested. It is expected that the indicators of this study will be provided an opportunity to understand the human rights situation of dental hygiene students and to improve problems such as human rights violations.

The purpose of this research is to provide the basic information for the development of dental healthcare system's expertise and spatial composition in diverse dental spaces in Korea according to dental specialist system enforcement. Literature review of dental expertise especially dental specialist system and investigation on current status of spatial composition of dental spaces have been conducted. After the review, the spatial composition with field survey and architectural drawings of selected dental spaces have been analyzed. The result of this study is arranged with three points. First of all, the main clinical dental spaces are the dental school's dental hospital, dental department in medical center/hospital and private dental clinic in Korea. The second one is that dental school's dental hospital had differentiated to 10-11 departments in 1970-1980's and dental department in medical center/hospital has been changing to dental hospital with 5-7 departments in 2010's, and dental clinic is changing to specific dental clinic according to dental specialist system in 2018. The third one is that spatial composition is related with dental expertise at diverse levels. Spatial composition in dental school's dental hospital had been highly differentiated with dental expertise, dental department in medical center/hospital is partially subdivided with dental specialist system, but that of dental clinic is not changed according to dental specialist system. In addition to current spatial composition according to dental expertise, it is necessary to analyze the change of spatial composition with diachronic methods to develop the dental healthcare system.
Background: This study aimed to investigate whether there is a difference in organizational member attitudes by workplace environment and workplace types in dental hygienists working at dental health centers. Methods: A face-to-face survey or online survey was administered to dental hygienists working at dental health centers, and a total of 95 subjects were included. The survey includes 13 items to ask factors affecting employee's job satisfaction. Also, some questions were included to assess perception of organizational member attitude: five about organizational citizenship behavior, two about innovative behavior, and four about organizational commitment. Results: Dental hygienists working at dental clinics were more satisfied with their incomes and numbers of working days, while those from dental university hospitals and general hospitals were more satisfied with education support. In addition, hygienists working at dental hospitals were more satisfied with job autonomy, individual work capability, safe working environment, personal relation, potential for personal development, and positive labor-management relations, compared to those working at general and university hospitals (p<0.05). Among the items about perception of organizational member attitudes, the scores of items about organizational citizenship behaviors were higher, whereas the scores of items about innovative behaviors were relatively lower. Individuals working at dental hospitals than those working at general and university hospitals, chiefs and team and department leaders than team members, and those with increased satisfaction with current workplace had more positive perception of organizational member attitudes. Conclusion: For dental hygienists to have positive attitudes as organizational members, working environment should be improved, and executives of dental healthcare centers should pay attention to improving job satisfaction of organizational members. Moreover, since dental hygienists need to improve their perception of innovative behaviors and citizenship behaviors to strengthen specialty of dental hygienists in a changing dental healthcare, relevant training should be addressed in refresher courses or school programs.

Purpose: This study was conducted to develop an evidence-based clinical imaging diagnostic guideline for implant planning, taking into account efficacy, benefits, and risks. Materials and Methods: The guideline development process employed the adaptation methodology used for Korean clinical imaging guidelines(K-CIG). Core databases(Ovid-Medline, Ovid-Embase, National Guideline Clearinghouse, Guideline International Network) and domestic databases (KoreaMed, KMbase, and KoMGI) were searched for guidelines. The retrieved articles were analyzed by 2 reviewers, and articles were selected using well-established inclusion criteria. Results: The search identified 294 articles, of which 3 were selected as relevant guidelines. Based on those 3 guidelines, 3 recommendations for implant planning were derived. Conclusion: We recommend radiography or cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning for individual patients judged to require a cross-sectional image after reading of a panoramic X-ray image and a conventional intraoral radiological image. Various steps should be taken to raise awareness of these recommendations among clinicians and the public, and K-CIG should be regularly reviewed and revised.
Purpose: This study aims to identify the recognition, readiness, and awareness of the need for education in the era of the 4th industrial revolution among dental technology students in the healthcare field, and to provide essential data for the development of a future-oriented curriculum. Methods: A survey of 260 students, who were briefed about the purpose of this study, was conducted at D University and G University, located in Daejeon and Gangwon-do, South Korea, respectively. A total of 229 questionnaires, excluding 31 with insufficient responses, were analyzed. Results: 1. Recognition of the 4th industrial revolution was 3.43±0.77, preparedness was 2.91±0.84, and awareness of the need for education was 3.86±0.80. 2. Major satisfaction was found to have a significant effect on concept recognition and impact recognition of the 4th industrial revolution, readiness level, and the need for education (p<0.001). Conclusion: It is necessary to develop an education program on specialized skills (professional knowledge) related to the 4th industrial revolution, and to implement such a program that serves the educational needs of individual groups.

This study endeavors to provide basic data for healthcare policy development by identifying factors that influence the unmet healthcare needs of the elderly with chronic diseases. The study utilized data from the 2017 Korean National Survey on the Elderly, and analyzed 9,117 elders afflicted with more than 1 chronic disease. We determined that 851 (9.3%) elders experienced unmet healthcare needs from hospital & clinical treatment, and 1,469 (16.1%) elders experienced unmet dental treatment. 'Economic difficulty' was the most common reason expressed by 425 (49.9%) elders for unmet healthcare needs from hospital and clinical treatment, and by 1,066 (72.6%) elders for dental treatment. Furthermore, unmet healthcare needs in hospital and clinical treatment were affected by various factors, including spouse, education, self-rated health status and exercise, whereas unmet healthcare needs in dental treatment were affected by factors such as spouse, education, medical aids, self-rated health status, smoking, and exercise. Based on the research results achieved, we propose a necessity to establish healthcare policies that consider the influencing factors, and help resolve the unmet healthcare needs of the elderly with chronic diseases.

Background: Particulate matter (PM) has been extensively observed due to its negative association with human health. Previous research revealed the possible negative effect of air pollutant exposure on oral health. However, the predictive model between air pollutant exposure and the prevalence of periodontitis has not been observed yet. Therefore, this study aims to propose a predictive model for the number of patients with periodontitis exposed to PM and atmospheric factors in South Korea using deep learning. Methods: This study is a retrospective cohort study utilizing secondary data from the Korean Statistical Information Service and the Health Insurance Review and Assessment database for air pollution and the number of patients with periodontitis, respectively. Data from 2015 to 2022 were collected and consolidated every month, organized by region. Following data matching and management, the deep neural networks (DNN) model was applied, and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) value was calculated to ensure the accuracy of the model. Results: As we evaluated the DNN model with MAPE, the multivariate model of air pollution including exposure to PM2.5, PM10, and other atmospheric factors predict approximately 85% of the number of patients with periodontitis. The MAPE value ranged from 12.85 to 17.10 (mean±standard deviation=14.12±1.30), indicating a commendable level of accuracy. Conclusion: In this study, the predictive model for the number of patients with periodontitis is developed based on air pollution, including exposure to PM2.5, PM10, and other atmospheric factors. Additionally, various relevant factors are incorporated into the developed predictive model to elucidate specific causal relationships. It is anticipated that future research will lead to the development of a more accurate model for predicting the number of patients with periodontitis.
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the use of machines to mimic intelligent human behavior. It involves interactions with humans in clinical settings, and augmented intelligence is considered as a cognitive extension of AI. The importance of AI in healthcare and medicine has been emphasized in recent studies. Machine learning models, such as genetic algorithms, artificial neural networks (ANNs), and fuzzy logic, can learn and examine data to execute various functions. Among them, ANN is the most popular model for diagnosis based on image data. AI is rapidly becoming an adjunct to healthcare professionals and is expected to be human-independent in the near future. The introduction of AI to the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases worldwide remains in the preliminary stage. AI-based or assisted diagnosis and decision-making will increase the accuracy of the diagnosis and render treatment more precise and personalized. Therefore, dental professionals must actively initiate and lead the development of AI, even if they are unfamiliar with it.
