Gas detonation cell width prediction model based on support vector regression

  • Detonation cell width is an important parameter in hydrogen explosion assessments. The experimental data on gas detonation are statistically analyzed to establish a universal method to numerically predict detonation cell widths. It is commonly understood that detonation cell width, ${\lambda}$, is highly correlated with the characteristic reaction zone width, ${\delta}$. Classical parametric regression methods were widely applied in earlier research to build an explicit semiempirical correlation for the ratio of ${\lambda}/{\delta}$. The obtained correlations formulate the dependency of the ratio ${\lambda}/{\delta}$ on a dimensionless effective chemical activation energy and a dimensionless temperature of the gas mixture. In this paper, support vector regression (SVR), which is based on nonparametric machine learning, is applied to achieve functions with better fitness to experimental data and more accurate predictions. Furthermore, a third parameter, dimensionless pressure, is considered as an additional independent variable. It is found that three-parameter SVR can significantly improve the performance of the fitting function. Meanwhile, SVR also provides better adaptability and the model functions can be easily renewed when experimental database is updated or new regression parameters are considered.

환형 관내의 데토네이션 파 전파 특성 해석 (Numerical Analysis of Detonation Wave Propagation Characteristics in Annular Channels)

  • 본 논문에서는 환형 관에서의 데토네이션 파의 전파 특성을 살펴보았다. 이전의 연구에 이용된 수치 기법과 이동 계산 창 기법을 본 연구에 이용하였으며, 관 폭의 값으로 무차원화 된 곡률 반경을 유일한 기하학적 변수로 고려하여 일련의 해석을 수행하였다. 곡률 반경이 작은 환형 관에서 데토네이션 파는 불안정하여 정규적인 데토네이션 셀 구조가 나타나지 않으며 셀 구조가 유지될 수 있는 임계 곡률 반경이 존재함을 알 수 있었다. 곡률의 효과로 관의 내벽 및 외벽은 압력 차가 발생하며, 외벽 쪽에 서는 overdriven 데토네이션의 경향을 가진다. 예상할 수 있는 바와 같이 곡률 반경이 커지면서 직선관의 결과에 수렴한다.

  • A series of experimental results on thin mild steel plates clamped at the boundary subjected to gas detonation shock loading are presented. Detonation occurred by mixing Acetylene (C2H2)-Oxygen (O2) in various volume ratio and different initial pressure. The applied impulse is varied to give deformation in the range from 6 mm to 35 mm. Analytical modeling using energy method was also performed. Dependent material properties, as well as strain rate sensitivity, are included in the theoretical modeling. Prediction values for midpoint deflections are compared with experimental data. The analytical predictions have good agreement with experimental values. Moreover, it has been shown that the obtained model has much less error compared with those previously proposed in the literature.

  • During a last decade, detonative combustion is promising combustion mechanism of high-speed propulsion systems, but is more rigorously considered in these days as a game-changer for the improvement of thermodynamic efficiency of propulsion and power generation systems. Regardless of the skepticism about the pressure loss associated with the strong shock waves, it is shown that the additional compression by the strong shock wave exhibits increased thermodynamics efficiency that is not achievable by conventional compression systems. Present talk will give an introduction to the concepts and the recent activities on the pressure gain combustors (PGC) researches based on detonation phenomena.

밀장전 발파압력의 확률론적 예측 (Probabilistic Estimation of Fully Coupled Blasting Pressure)

  • The propagation mechanism of a detonation pressure with fully coupled charge is clarified and the blasting pressure propagated in rock mass is derived from the application of shock wave theory. Probabilistic distribution is obtained by using explosion tests on emulsion and rock property tests on granite in Seoul and then the probabilistic distribution of the blasting pressure is derived from their properties. The probabilistic distributions of explosive properties and rock properties show a normal distribution so that the blasting pressure propagated in rock can be also regarded as a normal distribution. Parametric analysis was performed to pinpoint the most influential parameter that affects the blasting pressure and it was found that the detonation velocity is the most sensitive parameter. Moreover, uncertainty analysis was performed to figure out the effect of each parameter uncertainty on the uncertainty of blasting pressure. Its result showed that uncertainty of natural rock properties constitutes the main portion of blasting pressure uncertainty rather than that of explosive properties.

  • As a research to develop a SCRAM jet engine is actively conducted, a necessity to produce a high-enthalpy flow in a laboratory is increasing. In order to develop the SCRAM-jet engine, stabilized combustion in a supersonic flow-field should be attained, in which a duration time of flow is extremely short. Therefore, a mixing process of breathed air and fuel, which is injected into supersonic flow-fields is one of the most important problem. Since, the flow inside SCRAM jet engine has high-enthalpy, an experimental facility is required to produce such high-enthalpy flow-field. In this study, a detonation-driven shock tunnel was built and was used to produce high-enthalpy flow. Further-more, SCRAM jet engine model equipped backward-facing step was installed at test section and flow-fields were visualized using color-schlieren technique and high speed video camera. The fuel was injected perpendicular to the flow of Mach number three behind backward-facing step. The height of the step, distance of injection and injection pressure were changed to investigate the effects of step on a mixing characteristic between air and fuel. The schlieren photograph and pressure histories show that the fuel was ignited behind the step.

케로신-공기 혼합물의 데토네이션 하중에 의한 열탄소성 관의 동적 거동 해석 (Numerical Investigation of Dynamic Responses of a Thermal Elasto-plastic Tube under Kerosene-air Mixture Detonation)

  • 본 연구에서는 케로신-공기 혼합물 데토네이션 계산과 다물질 해석을 기반으로 데토네이션 하중에 의한 얇은 금속관의 열탄소성 거동에 대한 수치계산을 수행하였다. 데토네이션 하중은 케로신-공기 혼합물의 데토네이션을 활용하여 모델링하였으며, 검증을 위해 해석 결과를 C-J 조건과 실험적 셀 직경을 통해 비교 검증하였다. 또한 금속의 탄성/소성 거동을 확인하기 위하여, 소성 거동은 구리의 Taylor impact 문제로, 탄성 거동은 베를리움 평판 떨림 문제를 활용하였다. 온도에 의한 관의 탄소성 거동 변화를 확인하기 위하여 동일한 데토네이션 하중 하에서 초기 온도가 다른 관의 거동을 확인하고 이론식과의 비교를 통해 열연화 효과가 고려되어야 함을 확인하였다.

에멀젼 폭약의 폭속변화에 따른 진동특성 연구

  • 폭속이 서로 다른 에멀젼폭약의 특성값(폭발압력, 가스량, 폭발에너지, 폭발온도, 스트렝스)을 폭발반응 계산 프로그램인 Nitrodyn을 사용하여 구하였으며, 또한 동일 암반 조건에서 17mm약경의 폭속이 다른 3종류의 에멀젼 폭약을 시험발파 하여 얻은 진동자료를 가지고 진동의 특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과 발파원에서 40m 이내의 근거리에서는 폭속이 감소함에 따라 진동이 감소하였으나, 그 이상의 거리에서는 거의 유사하여 40m 이상의 거리에서는 진동 감소에 폭속이 큰 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다.

  • This paper deals with the modeling and simulation of the internal flowfield in a valveless airbreathing pulse detonation engine (PDE) currently under experimental development at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. The system involves no valves in the airflow path, and the isolation between the inlet and combustor is achieved through the gasdynamics in an isolator. The analysis accommodates the full conservation equations in axisymmetric coordinates, and takes into account variable properties for ethylene/oxygen/air system. Chemical reaction schemes with a single progress variable are implemented to minimize the computational burden. Detailed flow evolution during a full cycle is explored and propulsive performance is calculated. Effect of initiator mass injection rate is examined and results indicate that the mass injection rate should be carefully selected to avoid the formation of recirculation zones in the initial cold flowfield. Flow evolution results demonstrate a successful detonation transmission from the initiator to the combustor. However, strong pressure disturbance may propagate upstream to the inlet nozzle, suggesting the current configuration could be further refined to provide more efficient isolation between the inlet and combustor.

Theoretical Studies on Nitramine Explosives with -NH2 and -F Groups

  • The nitramine explosives with $-NH_2$ and -F groups were optimized to obtain their molecular geometries and electronic structures at DFT-B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level. The theoretical molecular density (${\rho}$), heat of formation (HOF), detonation velocity ($D$) and detonation pressure ($P$), estimated using Kamlet-Jacobs equations, showed that the detonation properties of these compounds were excellent. Based on the frequencies scaled by 0.96 and the principle of statistic thermodynamics, the thermodynamic properties were evaluated, which were respectively related with the temperature. The simulation results reveal that 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocan-2-amine (molecule B1) performs similarly to the famous explosive HMX, and 2-fluoro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (molecule C1) and 2-fluoro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (molecule D1) outperform HMX. According to the quantitative standard of energetics and stability as an HEDC (high energy density compound), molecules C1 and D1 essentially satisfy this requirement. These results provide basic information for molecular design of novel high energetic density compounds.
