  • This study is to suggest a Probabilistic design determining configurations of slider air bearings with the dimensional manufacturing tolerances of the ABS. The probabilistic design problem is formulated to minimize the variation in flying height from a target value while satisfying the desired probabilities keeping the pitch and roll angles within a suitable range. The proposed approach first selves the deterministic optimization problem. Then, beginning with this solution, the RBDO is continued with the probabilistic constraints affected by the random variables with a fixed standard deviation in normal distribution. The RBDO results are directly compared with the values of the initial design and the results of the deterministic optimization, respectively. The reliability analyses are performed by the descriptive sampling (DS) to show the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach. It is demonstrated that the Proposed RBDO approach can efficiently obtain an optimum solution satisfying all the desired probabilistic constraints.

  • Classical deterministic testing controls the execution of concurrent programs based on the equivalence between specifications and programs. However, it is not directly applicable to a situation in which synchronization sequences, being valid but infeasible, are taken into account. To resolve this problem, we had proposed automata-based deterministic testing in our previous works, where a concurrent program is executed according to one of the sequences accepted by the automaton recognizing all sequences semantically equivalent to a given sequence. In this paper, we present the automata-based testing environment for Java multi-thread programs, and we design and implement "Deterministic Executor" in the testing environment. "Deterministic Executor" transforms a Java multi-thread program by applying automata-based deterministic testing, the transformed program presents testing results. "Deterministic Executor" uses "Automata Generator", which generates an equivalent automaton of a test sequence, and "Replay Controller", which controls the execution of programs according to the sequence accepted by the automaton. By illustrating automata-based testing procedures with a gas station example, we show how the proposed approach does works in a Java multi-threaded program.roach does works in a Java multi-threaded program.

  • When Deterministic Design Optimization (DDO) methods are used, deterministic optimum designs are frequently pushed to the design constraint boundary, leaving little or no room for tolerances (or uncertainties) in design, manufacture, and operating processes. In the Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) model for robust system design, the mean values of uncertain system variables are usually used as design variables, and the cost is optimized subject to prescribed probabilistic constraints as defined by a nonlinear mathematical programming problem. Therefore, a RBDO solution that reduces the structural weight in uncritical regions does not only provide an improved design but also a higher level of confidence in the design. In this work, we seek to improve the quality of RBDO processes using efficient optimization techniques with object of improving the resulting objective function and satisfying the required constraints. Our recent RBDO developments show its efficiency and applicability in this context. So we present some recent structural engineering applications demonstrate the efficiency of these developed RBDO methods.

  • A fuzzy relation between X and Y as fuzzy subset of X × Y was proposed by Zadeh. Subsequently, several researchers have applied the notion of fuzzy subsets to various branches of mathematics and computer sciences. Murali an Nemitz have studied fuzzy relations connected with fuzzy equivalence relations and fuzzy functions. Ounalli and Jaoua defined a fuzzy difunctional relation on a set. difunctional relations are versatile mathematical tool, which can be used in software design and in database theory. Their work have revealed the usefulness of difunctional relations in program specification and in defining program correctness. The main goal of this paper is to define a fuzzy deterministic relation on a set, characterize the fuzzy deterministic relation as its level subsets and investigate some properties in connection with fuzzy deterministic relation. In particular we prove that a fuzzy relation R is fuzzy deterministic iff R is a fuzzy function.

  • Despite of the popularity of using empirical methods for support design, empirical rules suffer from the inherent problem of providing no indication of the safety degree of the design. For the support design of large span tunnel, it was considered that the empirical design guidelines should be augmented by more explicit design methods. This paper presents an overview of the analytical support design methodology that is used to refine initial empirical recommendations. The initial support design supplemented by analytical methods is validated by probabilistic and deterministic approach applied to stress-induced and structurally controlled gravity-driven instability problem each. As a result, the extent of the potential failure zone is sorted out and numerical parametric studies were performed to gain insight into the overall behavior of tunnel in the potential failure zone. Concequently, it was decided that additional conservation techniques have to be planed as a reserved support pattern.

  • Industrial products determined by fixed size posses definite limits variety by manufacture tolerance in existence. The optimum value solved by deterministic approaches do not account of tolerance bands of design variables and material properties. If we examine optimum value considering tolerance bands of design variables and material properties, it might be useless, owing to exist infeasible region. We have two ways to prevent being useless value. The one is to minimize tolerance band, the other is to consider tolerance band in optimum design. The former needed more accuracy during manufacturing process require higher production cost, the letter is more appropriate to consider tolerance band. In this research, we consider the tolerance bands of all variables, which might have the tolerance bands used in the problem, based on optimum value of deterministic approaches. Orthogonal arrays are used to minimize the number of trial. Tolerance bands are supposed discretionary according to design variable. Appropriateness suggested by this research is examined through two examples. Mathematical problem is investigated only in terms of tolerance bands of design variables, and cantilever beam problem is explained through tolerance bands of design variable, material properties and loading conditions. It is proved that values from the presented method are satisfactory for tolerance bands of variables.

  • Traditional design methods of bearing capacity of shallow foundations are deterministic in the sense that they do not explicitly consider the inherent uncertainty associated with the factors affecting bearing capacity. To account for such uncertainty, available deterministic methods rather employ a fixed global factor of safety that may lead to inappropriate bearing capacity predictions. An alternative stochastic approach is essential to provide a more rational estimation of bearing capacity. In this paper, the likely distribution of predicted bearing capacity of strip footings subjected to vertical loads is obtained using a stochastic approach based on the Monte Carlo simulation. The approach accounts for the uncertainty associated with the soil shear strength parameters: cohesion, c, and friction angle, ${\phi}$, and the cross correlation between c and ${\phi}$. A set of stochastic design charts that assure target reliability levels of 90% and 95%, are developed for routine use by practitioners. The charts negate the need for a factor of safety and provide a more reliable indication of what the actual bearing capacity might be.

  • There are significant nonlinearities and uncertainties in hard disk drive actuators. In particular, pivot bearing nonlinearity and repeatable run-out make track-following control difficult as track density increases. In this paper, we design a robust track-following controller using a robust deterministic control scheme in which the pivot bearing nonlinearity and repeatable run-out are considered as uncertainties. Simulation study is conducted to evaluate the control performance of the proposed control scheme.

  • In this paper, the well-conditioned observer for a stochastic system is designed so that the observer is less sensitive to the ill-conditioning factors in transient and steady-state observer performance. These factors include not only deterministic uncertainties such as unknown initial estimation error, round-off error, modeling error and sensing bias, but also stochastic uncertainties such as disturbance and sensor noise. In deterministic perspectives, a small value in the L$_{2}$ norm condition number of the observer eigenvector matrix guarantees robust estimation performance to the deterministic uncertainties. In stochastic viewpoints, the estimation variance represents the robustness to the stochastic uncertainties and its upper bound can be minimized by reducing the observer gain and increasing the decay rate. Both deterministic and stochastic issues are considered as a weighted sum with a LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) formulation. The gain in the well-conditioned observer is optimally chosen by the optimization technique. Simulation examples are given to evaluate the estimation performance of the proposed observer.

  • The existing underwater vehicle controller design is applied by linearizing the nonlinear dynamics model to a specific motion section. Since the linear controller has unstable control performance in a transient state, various studies have been conducted to overcome this problem. Recently, there have been studies to improve the control performance in the transient state by using reinforcement learning. Reinforcement learning can be largely divided into value-based reinforcement learning and policy-based reinforcement learning. In this paper, we propose the roll controller of underwater vehicle based on Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient(DDPG) that learns the control policy and can show stable control performance in various situations and environments. The performance of the proposed DDPG based roll controller was verified through simulation and compared with the existing PID and DQN with Normalized Advantage Functions based roll controllers.
