  • Korean fir(Abies koreana E.H.Wilson 1920), endemic tree species of Korean peninsula, is considered as vulnerable and endangered species to recent rapid environmental changes such as land use and climate change. There are limited activities and efforts to find natural habitats of Korean fir for conservation of the species and habitats. In this study, by applying SDMs (Species Distribution Models) based on climate and topographic factors of Korean fir, we developed Korean fir's predicted distribution model and explored novel natural habitats. In Mt. Shinbulsan, Youngnam region and Mt. Songnisan, we could find korean fir's two novel habitat and the former was the warmest($13^{\circ}C$ in annual mean temperature), the driest(1,200mm~1,600mm in annual rainfall) and relatively low altitude environment among Korean fir's habitats in Korea. The result of SDMs did not include mountain areas of Gangwon-do as habitats of A. nephrolepis, because there were different contributions of key habitat environment factors, summer rainfall, winter mean temperature and winter rainfall, between A. koreana and A. nephrolepis. Our results raise modification of other distribution models on Korean fir. Novel habitat of Korean fir in Mt. Shinbulsan revealed similar habitat affinity of the species, ridgy and rocky site, with other habitats in Korea. Our results also suggest potential areas for creation of Korea fir's alternative habitats through species reintroduction in landscape and ecosystem level.

  • A key component of autonomous navigation of intelligent home robot is localization and map building with recognized features from the environment. To validate this, accurate measurement of relative location between robot and features is essential. In this paper, we proposed relative localization algorithm based on 3D reconstruction of scale invariant features of two images which are captured from two parallel cameras. We captured two images from parallel cameras which are attached in front of robot and detect scale invariant features in each image using SIFT(scale invariant feature transform). Then, we performed matching for the two image's feature points and got the relative location using 3D reconstruction for the matched points. Stereo camera needs high precision of two camera's extrinsic and matching pixels in two camera image. Because we used two cameras which are different from stereo camera and scale invariant feature point and it's easy to setup the extrinsic parameter. Furthermore, 3D reconstruction does not need any other sensor. And the results can be simultaneously used by obstacle avoidance, map building and localization. We set 20cm the distance between two camera and capture the 3frames per second. The experimental results show :t6cm maximum error in the range of less than 2m and ${\pm}15cm$ maximum error in the range of between 2m and 4m.

  • Tn this paper, We propose a user friendly object-based multimedia retrieval system using the HCNN(HippoCampus Neural Network. Most existing approaches to content-based retrieval rely on query by example or user based low-level features such as color, shape, texture. In this paper we perform a scene change detection and key frame extraction for the compressed video stream that is video compression standard such as MPEG. We propose a method for automatic color object extraction and ACE(Adaptive Circular filter and Edge) of content-based multimedia retrieval system. And we compose multimedia retrieval system after learned by the HCNN such extracted features. Proposed HCNN makes an adaptive real-time content-based multimedia retrieval system using excitatory teaming method that forwards important features to long-term memories and inhibitory learning method that forwards unimportant features to short-term memories controlled by impression.

  • We introduce a novel scheme to characterize and index events in TV golf programs using MPEG-7 descriptors. Our goal is to identify and localize the golf events of interest to facilitate highlight-based video indexing and summarization. In particular, we analyze multiple (low-level) visual features using domain-specific model to create a perceptual relation for semantically meaningful(high-level) event identification. Furthermore, we summarize a TV golf program with TV-Anytime segmentation metadata, a standard form of an XML-based metadata description, in which the golf events are represented by temporally localized segments and segment groups of highlights. Experimental results show that our proposed technique provides reasonable performance for identifying a variety of golf events.

  • The average twin lambing rate of Bayanbulak sheep is 2% to 3%. However, a flock of sheep with a close genetic relationship and an average of 2 to 3 lambs per birth has been found recently. To determine the major genes controlling the prolificacy of the flock in the present study, the flock was designated A while 100 normal Bayanbulak sheep were randomly selected to comprise the control flock B. Ligase detection reaction method was applied to detect and analyze the 10 mutational loci of the 3 candidate prolificacy genes including bone morphogenetic protein type I receptors, bone morphogenetic protein 15, and growth differentiation factor 9. The 10 mutational loci are as follows: FecB locus of the BMPR-IB gene; $FecX^I$, $FecX^B$, $FecX^L$, $FecX^H$, $FecX^G$, and $FecX^R$ of the BMP15 gene; and G1, G8, and FecTT of the GDF9 gene. Two mutations including BMPR-IB/FecB and GDF9/G1 were found in Bayanbulak sheep. Independence test results of the two flocks demonstrate that the FecB locus has a significant effect on the lambing number of Bayanbulak sheep. However, the mutation frequency of the G1 locus in GDF9 is very low. Independence test results demonstrate that the GDF9 locus does not have a significant impact on the lambing performance of Bayanbulak sheep. Among the 10 detected loci, BMPR-IB/FecB is the major gene that influences the high lambing rate of Bayanbulak sheep.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the ability of I-131 labeled polyclonal human immunoglobulin to localize an infection. In our country, indium-111 labeled leukocyte or Tc-99m labeled IgG are not readily available because of compex, time-consuming procedure and cost. So we tried to localize infection with I-131 labeled IgG which could be easily prepared. Six rats, infected with staphylococcus aureus in a thigh muscle, received I-131 labeled IgG intravenously and I-131 labeled bovine serum albumin (BSA) were injected to other 5 infected rats. Scintigrams were made at 1, 4, 24, 48, 72 hour later. The radiopharmaceutical demonstrated significant accumulation at the site of infection. The accumulation of I-131 labeled IgG at the site of infection was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of I-131 labeled BSA at 48, 72 hour. Similar finding could be found at 24 hour imaging, but it was not significant statistically. Therefore it was found that vascular permeability alone could not account for the mode of action of I-131 labeled IgG and it was considered that specific binding played a role. In conclusion, focal sites of inflammation can be detected with I-131 labeled nonspecific human polyclonal IgG and it seems that this method can also be applied to localization of human infection.

  • Serum thyroglobulin measurement and I-131 whole-body scintigraphy (WBS) are well-established methods for the detection of recurrence in the follow-up of patients with thyroid carcinoma. However, inconsistent results are observed frequently, and these two methods are not always able to detect recurrence. In some patients, serum thyroglobulin level is elevated but the WBS is negative, because the recurrent tumor is too small and below the sensitivity of the diagnostic scan, or there is a dissociation between thyroglobulin synthesis and the iodine frapping mechanism. In such cases, various nuclear imaging methods including Tl-201 Tc-99m-sestamibi, and F-18-FDG PET can be used besides anatomical imaging methods. Among them, FDG PET localizes recurrent lesions in WBS-negative thyroid carcinoma with high accuracy. Several studies have suggested that empirical high-dose I-131 therapy resulted in a high rate of visualization in post-therapy scans with evidence of subsequent improvement. An important question is when to operate on patients with recurrent tumor. We believe that surgical removal is the best means of treatment for patients with localized persistent tumor, despite the high-dose I-131 therapy. with tumor in thyroid remnant, and with isolated recurrence in the lymph node, lung or bone. In addition, we recommend palliative resection of locally unresectable mass with subsequent treatment with high-dose I-131 therapy. Before I-131 therapy, the evaluation of sodium-iodide symporter expression in thyroid carcinoma can predict iodine uptake. Retinoic acid is known to induce redifferentiation, and to enhance I-131 uptake in thyroid carcinoma. Retinoic acid therapy may represent an alternative approach before high-dose I-131 therapy.

  • Due to the resource limitations of sensor nodes, providing a security protocol is a particular challenge in sensor networks. One popular method is the neighborhood-based key agreement protocol (NEKAP). NEKAP is an efficient and lightweight protocol, but it includes loopholes through which adversaries may launch replay attacks by successfully masquerading as legitimate nodes. In this paper, we present a modified security protocol for wireless sensor networks. We provide four types of keys for each node, which adapt to different security requirements; and an improvement is made to alleviate the replay attack. According to our qualitative performance analyses, the proposed security protocol provides effectiveness in terms of authentication security, attacking node detection, and replay attack resilience when compared to the conventional method.

  • The safety critical systems in nuclear power plants should be designed to have a high level of fault tolerant capability because those systems are used for protection or mitigation of the postulated accidents of nuclear reactor. Due to increasing of the system complexity of the digital based system in nuclear fields, the reliability of the digital based systems without an auto-test or a self-diagnostic feature is generally lower than those of analog system. To overcome this problem, additional redundant architectures in each redundant channel and self-diagnostic features are commonly integrated into the digital safety systems. The self diagnostic function is a key factor for increasing fault tolerant capabilities in the digital based safety system. This paper presents an availability and safety evaluation model to analyze the effect to the system's fault tolerant capabilities depending on self-diagnostic features when the loss or erroneous behaviors of self-diagnostic function are expected to occur. The analysis result of the proposed model on the several modules of a safety platform shows that the improvement effect on unavailability of each module has generally become smaller than the result of usage of conventional models and the unavailability itself has changed significantly depending on the characteristics of failures or errors of self-diagnostic function.

  • Because carcinoma of breast is known to readily metastasize to the bone, early detection of metastasis spread is very important. Two hundred thirty four consecutive patients who had $^{99m}Tc-MDP$ bone scans prior to treatment and during the follow up period were studied retrospectively to determine the contribution of the scans to staging, treatment and follow up examination between Jan. 1980 and Apr. 1987 in Seoul National University Hospital. 1) Positive bone scan rates in initial clinical stage I, II, III and IV were 0%, 4%, 14% and 53%, respectively. 2) The higher clinical stage is, the more cumulative risk of conversion to positive bone scan is during the same follow up period. 3) Conversion rate to positive bone scan in patients with lymph node metastasis is higher (50%) than those without metastasis (18%) (P < 0.001). We concluded that the bone scan in primary breast cancer was very useful to evaluate initial clinical stage and to perform the follow up examination.
