Inspection of Diamond Wheel through Boundary Detection and Processing (경계 추출 및 처리를 통한 다이아몬드 휠 검사)

  • In this paper, we present a method for the inspection of diamond wheels. In total, six items, including height, radius, and angle, need to be checked during the manufacturing of a diamond wheel. Automatic inspection through image processing is presented in this paper. First, a contour corresponding to the boundary of the diamond wheel is extracted from an image. Next, control points are selected by processing the contour. Seven control points are detected and used for the computation of the required item. Detailed procedures for the computation of the height, radius, and angle using control points are presented in this paper. Experimental results show the feasibility of the presented method.

  • In manual inspection of Lead Screw of computers many workers are needed to inspect samples, and its main disadvantage is that such types of inspection system not only gives low production, but also gives low perfection. Besides, in manual inspection system, the inspection cost of samples is higher than that of the automatic inspection system. Therefore, in this study to compensate these shortcomings, an automatic inspection system is developed. For the inspection of the surfaces and different dimensional parameters of computer Lead screw, a $360^{\circ}$ rotating machine vision system is developed. From the detailed analysis of the inspection results using the present developed inspection system, it is observed that the developed Lead Screw automatic inspection system is superior to those of manually inspection system.

  • Bridge collapses may deliver a huge impact on our society in a very negative way. Out of many reasons why bridges collapse, poor maintenance is becoming a main contributing factor to many recent collapses. Furthermore, the aging of bridges is able to make the situation much worse. In order to prevent this unwanted event, it is indispensable to conduct continuous bridge monitoring and timely maintenance. Visual inspection is the most widely used method, but it is heavily dependent on the experience of the inspectors. It is also time-consuming, labor-intensive, costly, disruptive, and even unsafe for the inspectors. In order to address its limitations, in recent years increasing interests have been paid to the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which is expected to make the inspection process safer, faster and more cost-effective. In addition, it can cover the area where it is too hard to reach by inspectors. However, this strategy is still in a primitive stage because there are many things to be addressed for real implementation. In this paper, a typical procedure of bridge inspection using UAVs consisting of three phases (i.e., pre-inspection, inspection, and post-inspection phases) and the detailed tasks by phase are described. Also, three major challenges, which are related to a UAV's flight, image data acquisition, and damage identification, respectively, are identified from a practical perspective (e.g., localization of a UAV under the bridge, high-quality image capture, etc.) and their possible solutions are discussed by examining recently developed or currently developing techniques such as the graph-based localization algorithm, and the image quality assessment and enhancement strategy. In particular, deep learning based algorithms such as R-CNN and Mask R-CNN for classifying, localizing and quantifying several damage types (e.g., cracks, corrosion, spalling, efflorescence, etc.) in an automatic manner are discussed. This strategy is based on a huge amount of image data obtained from unmanned inspection equipment consisting of the UAV and imaging devices (vision and IR cameras).

Comparative analysis for improving the effective application of HACCP prerequisite items in meat markets (식육판매장 HACCP 선행요건의 효율적인 적용을 위한 비교분석)

  • We analyzed the HACCP prerequisite of National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) and the Food Establishment Inspection Report of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recommend contents and ranges to be complemented and used for preparation of guidelines for more effective application of HACCP prerequisites. We used the HACCP inspection reports implemented by Korea Livestock Products HACCP Accreditation Service from 2007 to 2009, FDA Food Code 2009 Guide 3-B Instructions for Marking the Food Establishment Inspection Report, and Retail Food Establishment Sanitation Requirements of 410 Indiana Administrative Code. Major non-compliance items were open doors and windows, insanitary cleaning of in-use utensil, inadequate record of warehousing, and improper storage, transportation, and labelling. Hot water supply, personal hygiene, and regular product testing were additional week points which should be more strongly controlled by detailed operating guidelines. Also, current prerequisite items were required revision into more precise contents to enhanced the effective evaluation and practical application in meat markets.

  • Recently, the tunnel structures are increasing. And the tunnels are to be large diameter tunnel and long. Therefore, inspection, repair, and maintenance of tunnels are an extremely important part of infrastructure management, with particular technical and safety considerations arising from the very nature of underground construction. To inspect surface state of tunnels, concrete structures, it must generally use method of conventional visual inspection, but this method is very not objective. To measure the width, length, position, direction of a crack, it is very difficult, when the tunnel is long span and high rise. Thus, to make up for this demerits, in this paper is proposed the Tunnel Scanning System that we can check conditions of the tunnel structures quickly, detect the detailed data objectively, count automatically the width of a crack by the original software and follow the trend of long tenn changes in the condition of a tunnel.

Study on Machine Vision Algorithms for LCD Defects Detection (LCD 결함 검출을 위한 머신 비전 알고리즘 연구)

  • This paper proposes computer visual inspection algorithms for various LCD defects which are found in a manufacturing process. Modular vision processing steps are required in order to detect different types of LCD defects. Those key modules include RGB filtering for pixel defects, gray-scale morphological processing and Hough transform for line defects, and adaptive threshold for spot defects. The proposed algorithms can give users detailed information on the type of defects in the LCD panel, the size of defect, and its location. The machine vision inspection system is implemented using C language in an embedded Linux system for a high-speed real-time image processing. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithms are quite successful.

A Study on Improvement of Inspection Activity Based upon Condition Analysis of Expressway Bridges (고속도로 교량의 상태 분석에 근거한 점검 활동 개선에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, detailed safety inspection reports on the 915 expressway bridges which had been published from 1996 to 2010 are collected and condition of these bridges are analyzed. Damages are categorized into 'damage by defect', 'damage by physical force', and 'damage by deterioration' and the concept of damage possession rate is introduced to investigate the occurrence time and the characteristics of damages. Based on the top 10 damage patterns of expressway bridges and the deterioration characteristics of heavy snow and freezing cold area, reasonable improvement direction of inspection activity is suggested. From this study, it is known that improvement of inspection regularization during construction or at completion stage of bridges is needed. Since the deterioration progress of the heavy snow and freezing cold area is faster than that of general area, environmental characteristics should be considered in inspection activity. The results of present study can be widely used for improvement of inspection activity of expressway bridges.

  • To establish a management strategy of sediment-related disasters for adaptation to climate change, it is necessary to 1) understand the specific details and problems about the present status, 2) systematize related technologies by using exact numerical values obtained from physically-based analysis, and 3) ensure the basic guidelines are applied to field elastically. To achieve these successfully, detailed guidelines are required by scientifically considering the utilization and impact of related technology on the field. Here, detailed guidelines should include 1) the development of a basic plan, 2) enhancement of relevant technical instructions, 3) establishment of survey and inspection methods, 4) procedure of erosion control works in urban living sphere, and 5) proactive countermeasures against sediment-related disaster caused by earthquakes.

A Statistical Analysis of Results of Detailed Inspections on Aged Concrete Erosion Control Dams in Gyeongsangbuk-do (경상북도 지역 노후 콘크리트사방댐 정밀점검 결과의 통계적 분석)

  • We carried out this study to provide basic data necessary to establish a management plan for concrete erosion control dams in the future by analyzing results of detailed inspections of aged dams conducted in accordance with 「Guidelines for the Maintenance of the Erosion Control Facility」. We analyzed the results of a detailed inspection of 54 concrete erosion control dams which had been built over 20 years previously, located in private forests of Gyeongsangbuk-do using statistical methods. Having conducted exterior defect investigations, we found 18 dams (33.4%) in need of repair or follow-up measures and 15 dams in which the overall grade was changed due to investigator's corrections; we therefore considered that standardization of related standards and indicators would be necessary. After conducting concrete compression strength tests, we found 19 dams (35.2%) to be below the standard value of 21 MPa, and in particular, we included, in grade A, eight dams which we judged to be in good condition as a result of the exterior defect inspection. There was little clear correlation between the total score and the compressive strength of concrete, but there was a statistically significant difference in the compressive strength by overall grade. After analyzing the changes in the characteristics of the erosion control dams according to the elapsed years after construction, we detected no particular trend in the changes of total score and compressive strength over time. However, the cumulative ratio of the dams that required repair and follow-up measures and the dams below the compression strength standard had a strong positive linear relationship over time, suggesting that it would be possible to identify the aging characteristics of concrete erosion control dams.

E-quality control: A support vector machines approach

  • The automated part quality inspection poses many challenges to the engineers, especially when the part features to be inspected become complicated. A large quantity of part inspection at a faster rate should be relied upon computerized, automated inspection methods, which requires advanced quality control approaches. In this context, this work uses innovative methods in remote part tracking and quality control with the aid of the modern equipment and application of support vector machine (SVM) learning approach to predict the outcome of the quality control process. The classifier equations are built on the data obtained from the experiments and analyzed with different kernel functions. From the analysis, detailed outcome is presented for six different cases. The results indicate the robustness of support vector classification for the experimental data with two output classes.
