This study aimed to reveal the designer's creative process in the development of clothing designs. The researcher has taken roles both as a design practitioner and an observer. The full process of design development was concurrently documented while working to solve a specific problem. This included noting down the concept, keywords, and detailed scratch ideas, as well as refining the design by collecting sketches and taking photos. Integrated data from the captured design process were analyzed based on Lamb and Kallal's apparel design framework, which included problem identification, construction of preliminary ideas, design refinement, prototype development, and evaluation. The functional, expressive, and aesthetic (FEA) criteria of the entire process were thus assessed. Additionally, five professional apparel reviewers evaluated the design project based on FEA criteria. The results showed the processes for identifying targets and intentions, extracting the main elements from sources, developing the major visual concepts, and making final adjustments. Ultimately, this study revealed how a designer manages each stage of the creative design process. Sharing such detailed observations of the design process can help refine the knowledge involved in each stage of the creative process, and provide guidance for instructors in design education.

As 3D solid modeling has been widely used in designing products, solid models of the products are directly used in various applications such as engineering analysis and process planing. However, the fully-detailed solid models may not be necessary in some application. For example, it is often more efficient to use simplified model of part of engineering analysis. Generation of mesh for the complex original model requires a quite amount of time, and the consequence of finite element analysis may not be desirable due to small and detailed geometry in the model. In this paper, a method to simplify solid models of machined part is presented. This method decomposes the delta volume of machined part, and uses the decomposed volumes to simplify the solid model. Since this method directly recognizes the features to be removed from the final model, it is independent of not only design features of specific CAD system, but also designer's design practice of design sequences.

As functional requirement of massive digital information storage devices are on a trend for the higher data transfer rate and lower cost, many different technical efforts are being tested and implemented in the industry. FDB(Fluid Dynamic Soaring) is one of the major breakthroughs in rotor design in terms of TMR budget. Although FDB analysis based on Reynolds' equation is well established and popularly being used for DB design especially for the estimation of bearing stiffness, there are obvious limitations in the approach due to the inherent assumptions. A generalized analysis tool employing the full Navier-Stokes equation and the energy balance is to be beneficial for detailed FDB design In this publication, an efficient geometry modeling method is presented that provides fully integrated inputs for general FVM/FDM codes. By virtue of the flexibility of the presented method, many different detailed FDB design and analysis are carried over with ease.

NURBS surfaces have been widely used in engineering design since it can create a smooth surface using minimal numbers of data. But deformation of the surfaces is quite difficult especially for the detailed modification. Also, NURBS surface deformation processes need many inputs, and it is not easy to be implemented in 3D virtual system. In this paper, both the surface trimming and multi-resolution surface are used for the detailed sculpting including sharp edges of NURBS surface. QuadTree is used to separate cleanly the target surface with the surface for sculpting effect. Simple user strokes are also used for the sculpting target curves and GOMS(Goals, Operators, Methods, Selection Rules) model is applied to verify the efficiency of the proposed sculpting process.

Purpose: This study examines the daylighting design factors of Korean dementia nursing homes, in order to realize a therapeutic environment based on the therapeutic effect of light in the rapidly aging trend with an huge increase in the population of dementia in Korea. Methods: Through literature reviews, this study aims to theoretically examine the therapeutic light environment for the elderly with dementia, derive daylighting design factors of Korean dementia nursing homes, and analyze their detailed design factors. Results: The result of this study can be summarized into two points. The first one is that the daylighting design factors reflected in dementia nursing homes are derived into six factors: building layout, windows, glazing, shading devices, spaces, and interior finishings that determine the availability of daylight. The second one is that the detailed daylighting design factors are shown as primary and secondary detailed design factors, and the main values to be considered when applying these factors into dementia nursing homes are analyzed as maximizing daylight availability, optimization of the possibility of therapeutic view, and anti-glare. Implications: The daylighting design factors will contribute to maximizing the availability of daylight, optimizing the possibility of view, and minimizing the glare in the living spaces of dementia nursing homes in Korea.

The design process of the motor driven tilt/telescopic steering column is established by axiomatic design approach in conceptual design stage. By selecting independent design variables for improvin g performance of the steering system, each detailed design can be carried out independently. In the detailed design, the safety in crash environment and vibration reduction are considered. An occupant analysis code SAFE(Safety Analysis For occupant crash Environment) is utilized to simulate the body block test. Segments, contact ellipsoids and spring-damper elements are used to model the steering column in SAFE. The model is verified by the result of the body block test. After the model is validated, the energy absorbing components are designed using an orthogonal array. Occupant analyses are performed for the cases of the orthogonal array. Final design is determined for the minimum occupant injury. For vibrational analysis, a finite element model of the steering column is defined for the modal analysis. The model is validated by the vibration experiment. Size and shape variables are selected for the optimization process. An optimization is conducted to minimize the weight subjected to various constraints.

A torque converter, connected to a transmission/transaxle input shaft, connects, multiplies and interrupts the flow of engine torque into the transmission. Damper springs are usually equipped in a torque converter to convert stably the torque power supplied from engine. Damper Springs generally have the most flexible design variables among vehicle transmission parts, so that they could be effective design factors to improve the entire vehicle's performance. Damper spring, however, has geometric complexity after it equipped in a torque converter. For that reason, modeling a damper spring requires expert's knowledge to determine many design parameters and satisfy the functional requirements at the same time. In this paper, we introduce an optimum design method applied in detailed-design stage to reduce design process and financial loss caused by adequate design. Many design variables have to be classified and structuralized for Optimization. This also could make designer concentrate on functional requirements of damper spring, not on design possibility. In addition, modeling an assembled spring has technical restriction with primitives of the current major CAD solutions because of complexity of assembled spring shape. Thus, one of modeling solution presented in this paper since detailed and exact modeling is important for CAE or DMU.
Purpose: Design inducement incentive item and formula on permitted floor area ratio in district detailed plan have been improved to reflect the actual application of guidelines and the social needs of city and architecture. However, the current guideline has a limit to realize the purpose of the plan. This study proposes improvement of the items and parameters in formula. Method: This study analyzed the district detailed planning guidelines since 2000 and the cases of general type district unit plan. In order to propose improved items and parameters, planing purposes and present parameters were compared and analyzed. Result: Items of guidelines have been changed according to public needs. High necessity items were applied to large parameters, and these items have been changed as the guideline changes. Diversity of items depended on regional characteristics, and parameters were more flexible than items for most cases. The purposes of plans, parameters and items were analyzed and it revealed four items needed improvement; the inducement of the limited building line, the improvement of the pedestrian and street environment, the necessity of the open space, and strengthening of the regional agreement. For improvement, this study added items and improved the relevance between items and sub-items. The parameters were improved by considering the importance, feasibility and comparing them with each other. Simulated result confirmed that proposed guideline is appropriate to operate, and also characteristics of area encourage to operate it more flexible.
