An Economic Dispatch Algorithm as Combinatorial Optimization Problems

  • This paper presents a novel approach to economic dispatch (ED) with nonconvex fuel cost function as combinatorial optimization problems (COP) while most of the conventional researches have been developed as function optimization problems (FOP). One nonconvex fuel cost function can be divided into several convex fuel cost functions, and each convex function can be regarded as a generation type (G-type). In that case, ED with nonconvex fuel cost function can be considered as COP finding the best case among all feasible combinations of G-types. In this paper, a genetic algorithm is applied to solve the COP, and the $\lambda$-P table method is used to calculate ED for the fitness function of GA. The $\lambda$-P table method is reviewed briefly and the GA procedure for COP is explained in detail. This paper deals with three kinds of ED problems, namely ED considering valve-point effects (EDVP), ED with multiple fuel units (EDMF), and ED with prohibited operating zones (EDPOZ). The proposed method is tested for all three ED problems, and the test results show an improvement in solution cost compared to the results obtained from conventional algorithms.

극저온 Joule-Thomson 냉동기용 혼합냉매 결정에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Determination of Mixed Refrigerant for the Joule-Thomson Cryocooler)

  • The conceptual determination of mixed-refrigerant (MR) for a closed Joule-Thomson cryocooler is described in this paper. The thermodynamic cycle design was mainly considered to develop a cryocooler by using a compressor of domestic air-conditioning unit. The target cooling performance of the designed cryocooler is 10 W around 70 K with less than 5 kJ/kg enthalpy rise. The systematic approach of choosing a proper refrigerant among 20 different kinds of mixture for such cryogenic temperature was introduced in detail. The main components of the cryocooler are compressor, evaporator, oil separator, after-cooler, counterflow heat exchanger, and J-T expansion device. Due to the limitation of the compressor operation range, the temperature after the compression was limited below $117^{\circ}C$ (390 K) and the temperature before compression was restricted above $5^{\circ}C$ (278 K). 20 atm of discharging pressure (high pressure) and less than 3 atm suction pressure (low pressure) were the design conditions. The inlet temperature of a counterflow heat exchanger in the high Pressure side was about 300 K. The proper composition of the mixed refrigerant for the designed J-T cryocooler is 15% mol of$ N_2, 30% mol of $CH_4,\; 30% mol\; of C^2H^ 6,\; 10%\; mol\; of\; C_3H_8\; and \;15%\; mol\; of\; i-C_4H_10$.

Managing quality attributes using customer satisfaction coefficient

  • The two-way quality theory has been widely used as a method for classifying quality attributes for several decades. In particular, the Kano model that classifies attributes into not just conventional one-dimensional but must-be and attractive has gained popularity due to its applicability and ease of use. However, the wordings of the five alternatives in the Kano's questionnaire has been criticised for unclear meanings. This study proposes a new two-way model to classify attributes using 5-point Likert scale alternatives. For this, the current paper investigated a case of TV sets to examine how the proposed model works in comparison with the Kano model. The application results of the proposed model are different from the original one. The two-way model classifies quality attributes in more detail such as the "one-dimensional with an attractive tendency" attribute, which has a greater influence on satisfaction than dissatisfaction, the opposite "one-dimensional with a must-be tendency" attribute, and "highly one-dimensional" and "less one-dimensional" attributes. In this study, a potential satisfaction coefficient (PSC), a potential dissatisfaction coefficient (PDC), and an average potential coefficient (APC) to manage quality attributes are proposed and discussed for their utilization.

  • This Study is concerned with the Design Characteristics of Korean, Chinese and Japanese brick church architecture. The main subject of the study is to investigate the commonness and difference between Korean, Chinese and Japanese brick church architecture in the early stage(1880-1920). In carrying this study into execution, I examined the architectural and historical backgrounds based on the preceding research works, and analysed the plan, the spacial composition, design elements, techniques and materials, etc. The result of this study is as follows ; The basic concept of composition of space is same in order to embody the Basilican space, but the inner elevation and detail of brick structure is different. Chinese churches are more close to Western basilican style church in the point of shape and plan, but in the point of inner elevation and decoration of church, Japanese churches are more close to Western style church. Korean churches are in the middle of its. There are different attitudes of naturalization of western church architecture in Korea, China and Japan.

Updating BIM: Reflecting Thermographic Sensing in BIM-based Building Energy Analysis

  • This paper presents an automated computer vision-based system to update BIM data by leveraging multi-modal visual data collected from existing buildings under inspection. Currently, visual inspections are conducted for building envelopes or mechanical systems, and auditors analyze energy-related contextual information to examine if their performance is maintained as expected by the design. By translating 3D surface thermal profiles into energy performance metrics such as actual R-values at point-level and by mapping such properties to the associated BIM elements using XML Document Object Model (DOM), the proposed method shortens the energy performance modeling gap between the architectural information in the as-designed BIM and the as-is building condition, which improve the reliability of building energy analysis. The experimental results on existing buildings show that (1) the point-level thermography-based thermal resistance measurement can be automatically matched with the associated BIM elements; and (2) their corresponding thermal properties are automatically updated in gbXML schema. This paper provides practitioners with insight to uncover the fundamentals of how multi-modal visual data can be used to improve the accuracy of building energy modeling for retrofit analysis. Open research challenges and lessons learned from real-world case studies are discussed in detail.

Molecular dynamics simulation of primary irradiation damage in Ti-6Al-4V alloys

  • Displacement cascade behaviors of Ti-6Al-4V alloys are investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The embedded atom method (EAM) potential including Ti, Al and V elements is modified by adding Ziegler-Biersack-Littmark (ZBL) potential to describe the short-range interaction among different atoms. The time evolution of displacement cascades at the atomic scale is quantitatively evaluated with the energy of primary knock-on atom (PKA) ranging from 0.5 keV to 15 keV, and that for pure Ti is also computed as a comparison. The effects of temperature and incident direction of PKA are studied in detail. The results show that the temperature reduces the number of surviving Frenkel pairs (FPs), and the incident direction of PKA shows little correlation with them. Furthermore, the increasing temperature promotes the point defects to form clusters but reduces the number of defects due to the accelerated recombination of vacancies and interstitial atoms at relatively high temperature. The cluster fractions of interstitials and vacancies both increase with the PKA energy, whereas the increase of interstitial cluster is slightly larger due to their higher mobility. Compared to pure Ti, the presence of Al and V is beneficial to the formation of interstitial clusters and indirectly hinders the production of vacancy clusters.

  • Shock-focusing concave reflectors can have parabolic, circular or elliptic cross-sections. They produce effectively a very high pressure at the focusing point. In the past, many optical images have been obtained on shock focusing via experiments. Measurement of field variables is, however, difficult in the experiment. Using the wave propagation algorithm and the Cartesian embedded boundary method, we have successfully obtained numerical Schlieren images that appear very much like the experimental results. In addition, we obtained the detailed field variables such as pressure, velocity, density and vorticity in the unsteady domain. The present numerical results have made it possible to understand the shock focusing phenomenon in more detail than before.

A Framework for Supporting RFID-enabled Business Processes Automation

  • Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an established technology and has the potential, in a variety of applications, to significantly reduce cost and improve performance. As RFID-enabled applications will fulfill similar tasks across a range of processes adapted to use the data gained from RFID tags, they can be considered as software products derived from a common infrastructure and assets that capture specific ions in the domain. This paper discusses a framework that supports the development of RFID-enabled applications based on a business process family model (BPFM), explicitly representing both commonalities and variabilities. To develop this framework, common activities are identified from RFID-enabled applications and the variabilities in the common activities are analyzed in detail using variation point concepts. Through this framework, RFID data is preprocessed, and thus, RFID-enabled applications can be developed without having to process RFID data. Sharing a common model and reusing assets to deploy recurrent services may be considered an advantage in terms of economic significance and the overall product quality afforded.

Identification of Potent Leukocyte Common Antigen-Related Phosphatase Inhibitors via Structure-Based Virtual Screening

  • Leukocyte common antigen-related phosphatase (LAR) has been considered a promising target for the development of therapeutics for neurological diseases. Here, we report the first example for a successful application of the structure-based virtual screening to identify the novel small-molecule LAR inhibitors. Five of these inhibitors revealed micromolar inhibitory activities with the associated $IC_{50}$ values ranging from 2 to 6 ${\mu}M$. Because the newly identified inhibitors were also screened for having desirable physicochemical properties as a drug candidate, they may serve as a starting point of the structure-activity relationship study to optimize the medical efficacy. Structural features relevant to the stabilization of the new inhibitors in the active site of LAR are discussed in detail.

  • This paper is the study of methodology for development of interface structure modules for an integrated system or steel framework structures. For development of the modules, it is used that data translation for the Steel Detail Neutral File(SDNF) format and the methodology have contacted individual systems in integrated system. The point of methology is translated system interface data with ASCⅡ format of system output and is presented with EXPRESS-G schema model. In the future, these neutral format will use structural design, engineering, facilities management, fabrication, etc. Therefore such a series of neutral formants is valuable to development of all structure fields.
