  • Flow around an ICE2 high-speed train exiting a tunnel under the influence of a wind gust has been studied using numerical technique called detached eddy simulation. A wind gust boundary condition was derived to approximate previous experimental observations. The body of the train includes most important details including bogies, plugs, inter-car gaps and rotating wheels on the rail. The maximal yawing and rolling moments which possibly can cause a derailment or overturning were found to occur when approximately one third and one half of the train, respectively, has left the tunnel. These are explained by development of a strong vortex trailing along the upper leeward edge of the train. All aerodynamic forces and moments were monitored during the simulation and the underlying flow structures and mechanisms are explained.

  • We present a simulation of a hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes / Large Eddy Simulation (RANS/LES) based on detached eddy simulation (DES) for a Burrows and Kurkov supersonic planar mixing experiment. The preliminary simulation results are checked in order to validate the numerical computing capability of the current code. Mesh refinement studies are performed to identify the minimum grid size required to accurately capture the flow physics. A detailed investigation of the turbulence/chemistry interaction is carried out for a nine species 19-step hydrogen-air reaction mechanism. In contrast to the instantaneous value, the simulated time-averaged result inside the reactive shear layer underpredicts the maximum rise in $H_2O$ concentration and total temperature relative to the experimental data. The reason for the discrepancy is described in detail. Combustion parameters such as OH mass fraction, flame index, scalar dissipation rate, and mixture fraction are analyzed in order to study the flame structure.

  • A methodology for the simulation of compressible high Reynolds number flow over rigid and moving bodies on a structured Cartesian grid is described in this paper. The approach is based on a modified version of the Brinkman Penalization method. To avoid oscillations in the vicinity of the body and to simulate shcok-containing flows, a Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory scheme is used to discretize the spatial flux derivatives. For high Reynolds number viscous flow, two turbulence models of the two-equation Menter's SST URANS model and a two-equation Detached Eddy Simulation are implemented. Some simple flow examples are given to assess the accuracy of the technique. Finally, a moving grid capability is demonstrated.

  • A two-dimensional backward facing step flow was comptuted using a Detached Eddy simulation(DES) based on the SST turbulence model. The expansion ratio(ER) was 1.125 and the Reynolds number based on the step height and the mean velocity in the upstream channel was 37,500. The flow condition was the same as with the experimental research[1]. The reattachment length, oscillatory characteristics of the flow and the coherent structures of the present simulation were compared to demonstrate the improtance of spanwise grid spacing.

  • Detached Eddy Simulation(DES) is performed for turbulent flow of the $270^{\circ}$ bend at a Reynolds number of 56,690. A Fine grid generation is used near a wall in order to satisfy the wall boundary condition of y+<1. Turbulence models adopted for DES and Reynolds Average Navier Stokes(RANS) simulation are SST(Shear Stress Transfort) model. Solutions for both streamwise and circumferential velocity components are compared with the experimental data by Lee for $270^{\circ}$ bend and by Chang for $180^{\circ}$ bend.

  • A two-dimensional backward facing step flow is simulated by using URANS and Detached Eddy Simulations(DES) approaches. Turbulence models adopted for URANS and DES simulations are Spalart-Allmaras(S-A) model and Shear Stress Transport(SST) model. The target flow with ER=1.125, $Re_H=37,500$ is experimentally studied by Driver & Seegmiller. Various versions of DES have been tested in this paper. Results of the simulations are compared with the experimental data available to evaluate the merits and demerits of URANS and several versions of DES. URANS simulation converges to a steady state and hence unsteady characteristics are not featured. DES simulations in general successfully mimic large scale structures and oscillation characteristics of the flow.

  • As wind flows around a sharp-edged body, the resulting separated flow becomes complicated, with multiple separations and reattachments as well as vortex recirculation. This widespread and unpredictable phenomenon has long been studied academically as well as in engineering applications. In this study, the flow characteristics around rectangular prisms with five different aspect ratios were determined through wind tunnel experiments and a detached eddy simulation, that placed the objects in a simulated deep turbulent boundary layer at $Re=4.6{\times}10^4$. A series of rectangular prisms with the same height (h = 80 mm), different longitudinal lengths (l = 0.5h, h, and 2h), or different transverse widths (w = 0.5h, h, and 2h) were employed to observe the effects of the aspect ratio. Furthermore, five wind directions ($0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$) were selected to observe the effects of the wind direction. The simulated results of the surface pressure were compared to the wind tunnel experiment results and the existing results of previous papers. The vortex and spectrum were also analyzed to determine the detailed flow structure around the body. The paper also highlights the pressure distribution around the rectangular prisms with respect to the different aspect ratios. With an increasing transverse width, the surface suction pressure on the top and side surfaces becomes stronger. In addition, depending on the wind direction, the pressure coefficient experiences a large variation and can even change from a negative to a positive value on the side surface of the cube model.
