Perceptions About Alcohol Harm and Alcohol-control Strategies Among People With High Risk of Alcohol Consumption in Alberta, Canada and Queensland, Australia

  • Objectives: To explore alcohol perceptions and their association hazardous alcohol use in the populations of Alberta, Canada and Queensland, Australia. Methods: Data from 2500 participants of the 2013 Alberta Survey and the 2013 Queensland Social Survey was analyzed. Regression analyses were used to explore the association between alcohol perceptions and its association with hazardous alcohol use. Results: Greater hazardous alcohol use was found in Queenslanders than Albertans (p<0.001). Overall, people with hazardous alcohol were less likely to believe that alcohol use contributes to health problems (odds ratio [OR], 0.46; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.27 to 0.78; p<0.01) and to a higher risk of injuries (OR, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.33 to 0.90; p<0.05). Albertans with hazardous alcohol use were less likely to believe that alcohol contributes to health problems (OR, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.26 to 0.92; p<0.05) and were also less likely to choose a highly effective strategy as the best way for the government to reduce alcohol problems (OR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.43 to 0.91; p=0.01). Queenslanders with hazardous alcohol use were less likely to believe that alcohol was a major contributor to injury (OR, 0.39; 95% CI, 0.20 to 0.77; p<0.01). Conclusions: Our results suggest that people with hazardous alcohol use tend to underestimate the negative effect of alcohol consumption on health and its contribution to injuries. In addition, Albertans with hazardous alcohol use were less in favor of strategies considered highly effective to reduce alcohol harm, probably because they perceive them as a potential threat to their own alcohol consumption. These findings represent valuable sources of information for local health authorities and policymakers when designing suitable strategies to target alcohol-related problems.

  • 오늘날 '정보화사회' 구축은 국가경쟁력 획득에 중요한 수단이 된다. 특히, 우리나라는 전 세계적으로 성공적인 정보화 구축 대표 사례로 평가 받고 있다. 이와는 반대로 북한은 심각한 '정보격차' 문제로 인해 그렇지 못한 실정이다. 이러한 정보격차의 발생원인으로는 세 가지 측면이 있다. 첫째, 매체접근성, 둘째, 정보동원력, 셋째, 정보의식이다. 이러한 세가지 측면을 바탕으로 통일 이후 북한지역의 정보화 구축 과정에 대해 설계 제안한다. 본 연구의 목적은 통일시대를 대비해 어떻게 북한 지역의 정보화 구축을 할 것인가에 대해 단계별 실행 전략을 도출하고자 한다. 이를 위해 우리나라와 북한의 정보화 구축 단계들을 각각 살펴보고 추진과정을 분석하였다. 본 연구에서 제시한 실행전략이 향후 연구에 있어서 거대한 담론을 일으키는 초석이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

리질리언스 관점에서 수변 공간 계획에 관한 고찰 - 리질리언트 바이 디자인 공모전과 스펀지 시티 프로젝트를 바탕으로 (A Study on Waterfront Planning and Design from the Perspective of Resilience - Focusing on Resilient by Design Challenge and Sponge City)

  • 연구목적: 본 연구는 물과 관련된 재난의 심각성과 이에 대한 도시 대응 전략마련의 중요성에 초점을 맞추어 탄력적인 수변 공간 재구조화의 방향성 모색을 목표로 한다. 연구방법: 이를 위해 도시 리질리언스의 이론적 고찰을 토대로 해외의 계획 및 설계사례를 분석하여 국내 수변 공간 계획·설계에 적용 가능한 물리적·사회 시스템적 설계요소를 도출하였다. 연구결과: 리질리언트 바이 디자인 공모전의 제안들은 기존 계획안들과 비교하여, 더욱 체계적인 방식으로 탄력적인 사회 시스템 마련과 지속가능성을 위한 전략들을 담고 있었으며, 스펀지 시티 프로젝트들에서는 탄력적 도시 수변 공간조성을 위한 다양한 물리적 설계전략과 기술들을 발견하였다. 결론: 교육적 기능의 제고와 주민참여의 확대, 가버넌스 시스템의 마련과 체계적인 지속가능한 계획 수립, 생태적 접근방식과 다양한 저영향개발기법 도입 등은 재난에 탄력적으로 대응하기 위한 국내 수변 공간 계획·설계에 고려되어야 할 요소들이다.

A Research on Methods for English Native-Speakers' Teaching in Korean EFL Classes

  • This research conducted between March and December of 2005 has focused on analyzing a diverse range of educational services provided by English native-speaking instructors teaching in Korea. This study includes quantitative research findings from 238 university students. This dual-semester research study focuses on our most recent Korean EFL (English as a Foreign Language) programs provided for university students who wish to improve their English ability. Many students hope to partake in lectures taught by Native English Speaking teachers (hereafter NS teachers), and many universities are also willing to open additional courses for these students. However, in order for lectures to be most effective, NS instructors need to be appropriately trained or qualified teachers in order to successfully educate their students. Furthermore, NS teachers need to constantly review their teaching styles and strategies to allow for professional development and to ensure an improvement in their teaching methodology. Overall, this research provides whole English lecture views of NS teachers that is data-driven regarding designing, implementing, evaluating, and reforming the education of English taught by NS teachers working in Korea.

Underwater Acoustic Positioning System Design for Shallow Water Depth Application

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a practical underwater positioning system, which is applicable for shallow water depth conditions. In this paper, two strategies are used to enhance the navigation performance. First, a low-cost acoustic-ranging-based precise navigation solution for shallow water is designed. Then, the outlier rejection algorithm is introduced by designing a velocity gate. The acoustic-ranging-based navigation is implemented by modifying the long base line solution. To enhance the tracking precision, the outlier rejection algorithm is introduced. The performance of the developed approach is evaluated using experiments. The results demonstrate that precise shallow water depth navigation can be implemented using the suggested approaches.

Unified Modeling Language based Analysis of Security Attacks in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

  • Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are rapidly emerging because of their potential applications available in military and civilian environments. Due to unattended and hostile deployment environments, shared wireless links, and inherent resource constraints, providing high level security services is challenging in WSNs. In this paper, we revisit various security attack models and analyze them by using a well-known standard notation, Unified Modeling Language (UML). We provide a set of UML collaboration diagram and sequence diagrams of attack models witnessed in different network layers: physical, data/link, network, and transport. The proposed UML-based analysis not only can facilitate understanding of attack strategies, but can also provide a deep insight into designing/developing countermeasures in WSNs.

벽면충돌 가솔린 분무 모델 (Modeling of a Gasoline Spray Impinging on a Wall)

  • Most gasoline engines employ a port injection system to achieve the better fuel-air mixing. A part of injected fuels adheres to the wall or intake valve and forms a film of liquid fuel. The other is secondarily atomized by the spray-wall interaction. A better understanding of this interaction will help in designing injection systems and controlling the strategies to improve engine performance and exhaust emissions. In the present research, the spray-wall interaction was investigated by a laser sheet visualization method. The shape of sprays was pictured at various impinging velocities and angles. The fuel dispersion was estimated by fluorescence light, and the atomization was evaluated by the enlarged images of droplets. The experimental results were compared with model predictions which are based on OPT method. The model has been modified to have the better agreement with the experimental result, and was implemented in the KIVA-II code.

  • Automatic identification of Chinese personal names in unrestricted texts is a key task in Chinese word segmentation, and can affect other NLP tasks such as word segmentation and information retrieval, if it is not properly addressed. This paper (1) demonstrates the problems of Chinese personal name identification in some If applications, (2) analyzes the structure of Chinese personal names, and (3) further presents the relevant processing strategies. The geographical differences of Chinese personal names between Beijing and Hong Kong are highlighted at the end. It shows that variation in names across different Chinese communities constitutes a critical factor in designing Chinese personal name Identification algorithm.

  • 이 논문은 최근들어 보급이 확대되고 있는 아트리움(Atrium)을 이용한 건물에 있어서, 아트리움의 가장 기본적 인 기능인 에너지절약 효과와 환경조절효과가 거의 실효를 거두지 못하고 오히려 환경의 악화와 에너지소비 증가로 나타나는 점을 고려하여, 아트리움의 환경조절기능에 대한 기초사항을 체계적으로 정리하고 에너지절약 성능을 정량적으로 분석하여 건축설계시 적용할 수 있는 아트리움의 설계기법을 제시함으로써 아트리움을 통한 건물의 에너지절약 효과를 극대화하고 쾌적환경을 조성하는 기초자료를 제공하고자 한다.

  • In this paper, we discuss how to operate a buffer yard in an automated container terminal, which will be used for resolving the difficulties to which the interaction between external manned trucks and internal unmanned equipment led. The determination of fleet size of material handling equipment is an important issue in designing of buffer yard in automated container terminals. This research also addresses the issue of determining buffer capacities through simulation. By using response surface methodology (RSM) for efficient experimentation, the optimal combination of design parameters under applicable operational strategies is obtained.
