Current steel-framed building design codes are based on theoretical and experimental researches on the conventional structural steel. However, the yield phenomenon of austenitic stainless steel, which is characterized by continuous yielding, is quite different from that of conventional structural steel. The offset strength, which should determine the design strength, may affect the limits of width-thickness ratio of current design codes. Stub column test results showed that the limits of width-thickness ratio satisfied both ASD and LRFD codes when 0.2% offset strength was regarded as design strength. In addition, the local buckling strengths of all stainless steel stub columns did not decrease rapidly compared with those of conventional structural steel columns, even though the width-thickness ratio exceeded the design limit.

The object of this study was to design of micro stage, which is one of the equipments embodied in ultra precision positioning mechanism. Design factors for micro stage were decided a roundness of hinge, a thickness of hinge, a thickness of stage, a length of arms and a clearance of division. To obtain the $1^{st}$ natural frequency and equivalent stresses, FEM simulation was performed using the table of orthogonal arrays and Taguchi method was used to determine the optimal design parameters. As results of this study, the size of 1st natural frequency and equivalent stresses on micro stage was influenced significantly by a thickness of hinge and a length of arm.

For the insulation design of a high temperature superconducting(HTS) cable, three kinds of design method were proposed, which used AC and impulse withstand voltage and partial discharge inception strength. However, the designed insulation thickness by AC and impulse could not be applied to cable fabrication process due to much low electrical breakdown strength. The effect of the multi-layered insulation paper was not considered on the previous insulation design and the insulation thickness by partial discharge inception strength could be applied only. In this paper, the electrical breakdown characteristic, which considered the effect of multi-layered of LPP, was investigated to design the insulation thickness.
Progressive drawing processing is one of the manufacturing processes used to mass-produce a variety of products on the industrial site. In this study, the goal is to achieve a uniform product thickness of at least 1.3mm by reducing the wall thickness of the coupler parts used in automotive air conditioning systems to within 15% using A5052-H32 materials. The progressive die was designed using Blank's law of volume invariance. Due to the characteristics of the drawing process, the material thickness in the punch R part decreases and the thickness in the die R part increases. When designing the progressive die of the coupler part, an ironing method, a push back method, and a stand-alone die pad method were applied to each process to design a mold in consideration of the drawing rate and to artificially adjust the thickness change. The suitability of the method used in die design was investigated by measuring the thickness change of forming parts for each process. In the final part, it was confirmed that the thickness measurement values of the five regions of a radial line were implemented as 1.34-1.36 mm.

This study is a part of research for developing the technologies of long life pavements having more than 40-year design life. The objective of this study is to develop the simplified design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the long life pavement. A synthetic database was established using the finite element program of a pavement structure with various combinations of layer thickness and modulus. The synthetic database includes the structural and material information, surface deflection, and critical pavement responses. Using the developed synthetic database, this paper suggests the minimum layer thickness and modulus for long life pavements bared on the limited strain level concept. Results demonstrate that the pavement greater than 410mm of total AC layer thickness is considered as the long life pavements regardless of the material characteristics and thickness in each layer. To become a long life pavement, a total thickness of AC layer should be greater than 250mm. The design procedure for determining the layer thickness and modulus of the pavements with AC layer thickness ranging from 250 to 410mm is also presented in this paper.

The structure of satellite was of six parts of control system, power system, thermal control system, remote measurement command system, propellant system and thrust system. In these parts, propellant system consists of propellant tank and thrust device. What we want to perform is optimum design to minimaize the weight of propellant tank. In order to design optimal propellant tank, several parameters should be adopted form the tank geometry like the relative location of the lug and variation of the wall thickness. So the analysis was executed by finite element analysis for finding optimal design parameters. The structure was devided into 3 parts, the initial thickness zone, the transitional zone, and the weak zone, whose effects on the pressure vessel strength was investigated. Finally the optimal lug location and the three zone thickness were obtained and the weight was compared with the uniform thickness vessel.

A rigid-viscoplastic finite element method has been used for modeling superplastic stretch/blow process design to improve thickness distribution. Punch velocity-time relationship of the stretch forming and pressure-time cycle of the blow forming for a given strain rate are calculated. A superplastic material is assumed to be isotropic and a plane-strain line element based on membrane approximation is employed for the formulation. The effects of the width, corner radius and height of the punch during stretch forming are examined for the final thickness distribution, and the process design to improve thickness distribution can be established.

The buckling assessment of plate panels described in common structural rules (CSR) is to be determined according to the buckling utilization factor with hull girder stresses calculated on net hull girder sectional properties. As the thickness requirement for the buckling assessment of plate panels is not explicitly given in CSR, a lot of time is spent to find the proper thickness of plate panels until reaching to an allowable buckling utilization factor. In this study, in order to reduce time and cost, the thickness requirement of plate panels satisfying buckling assessment was derived. The structural design system included with the thickness requirement for buckling assessment was developed. The system is called as Oil-tanker Automated Structural Investigation System (OASIS). The design result of longitudinal strength members using OASIS was verified by Nauticus Hull which is the rule scantling software of DNV. Finally, optimum design of a double hull tanker for the minimum weight using OASIS was presented.
Thermoforming is a plastic manufacturing process that applies a force to stretch a film of heated thermoplastic material over an engineered mold to create a 3-dimensional shape. After forming, the shaped part can then be trimmed and finished to specification to meet an end-user's requirements. The process and thermoplastic materials are extremely versatile and can be utilized to manufacture parts for a very wide range of applications. In this study, based on K-BKZ nonlinear viscoelastic model, thermoforming process analysis was performed for an interior room-lamp. The predicted thickness was minimum at the corner of a molded film, and maximum at the center of the bottom. By using the Taguchi method of design of experiments, the effects of process conditions on residual stresses were investigated. The dominant factors were the liner thickness and the film heating time. As the thickness of the liner increased, the residual stress decreased. And it was found that the residual stress decreased significantly when the film heating temperature was higher than the glass transition temperature. A thermoforming mold and a trimming mold were manufactured, and the spring back was investigated through experiments. The dominant factors were film heating time, liner thickness, and lower mold temperature. As the film heating time and liner thickness increased, the spring back decreased. In addition, it was found that the spring back decreased as the lower mold temperature increased.
The linear actuator has the inherent drawback of air gap variation because its linear motion is usually guided by the springs, which destabilizes the dynamic performance. In order to design the linear actuator to be insensitive to air gap, this paper describes the robust design of the air compressor driving linear actuator using Taguchi method. The orthogonal arrays are constructed with selected control factors and noise factor for minimum experiment. The control factors are thickness of inner magnet, height of upper yoke, thickness of outer magnet and thickness of lower yoke while noise factor is airgap. The finite element analysis using commercial electromagnetic analysis program "MAXWELL" are performed instead of experiment. ANOVA are performed to investigate the effects of design factors. In result, the optimal robust linear actuator which is insensitive to air gap variation is designed.
