Structure of product, which is not considered by easy of assembly, has many hidden costs. For reduction of hidden costs, concepts of line balancing and assembly-oriented design are used. We find that part of structure can be improved by concept of line balancing. To reduce assembly time and enhance easy of assembly, design principles are developed by concept of assembly-oriented design. And design principles for improvement are applied according to condition of the grasped parts of product structure. Thersfore, we could design assembly-oriented design for better structure and low cost.

The major function of the nacelle cover is protecting the inside equipments. Therefore, it is required not only sufficient strength and stability but also light weight. In this paper, design loads are calculated according to the GL Wind guideline Ed. 2003. To ensure the structural safety, a composite structure is selected. The structural design is processed by two steps which are preliminary design and detail design. In the preliminary design step, a structural analysis is performed with initial thickness, 5mm. As reviewing above analysis results, weak regions of the nacelle cover reinforced using the spar cap structure which is same as the blade structure. In the analysis model, the support structure is connected with the nacelle cover and analyzed its structural safety at the same time.
This paper proposes an optimum design method of structural and control systems, using a 2-D truss structure as an example. The structure is subjected to initial static loads and disturbances. For the structure, a FEM model is formed. Using modal transformation, the equation of motion is transformed into modal coordinates, in order to decrease D.O.F. of the FEM model. To suppress the effect of the disturbances, the structure is controlled by an output feedback $H_{\infty}$ controller. The design variables of the combined optimal design of the control-structure systems are the cross sectional areas of truss members. The structural objective function is the structural weight. The control objective function is the $H_{\infty}$ norm, the performance index of control. The second structural objective function is the energy of the response related to the initial state, which is derived from the time integration of the quadratic form of the state in the closed-loop system. In a numerical example, simulations have been perform. Through the consideration of structural weight and $H_{\infty}$ norm, an advantage of the combined optimum design of structural and control systems is shown. Moreover, since the performance index of control is almost nearly optimiz, we can acquire better design of structural strength.

In this paper, we derive dynamic equation of helicopter and design controller based on variable structure system. It is difficult to control helicopter because it has non-linear coupling between input and output of system and is MIMO system. The design of control law is considered here using variable structure methodology giving the robustness to parameter variations and invariance to some subsets of external disturbance. However we derive dynamic equations of helicopter and design stabilizing variable structure controller. Also, simulation results are given in this paper.

A combined optimal design problem is discussed taking a 3-D truss structure as a design object. We use descriptor forms for a controlled object and a generalized plant because the structural parameters appear naturally in these forms. We consider not only the minimum weight design problem for the structure, but also the suppression problem of the effect of disturbances for the control system as the purpose of the design. A numerical example shows the validity of combined optimal design of the structure and control systems. We also consider the validity of the sensor-actuator collocation for the control system design in this paper.

A control-structure combined optimal design problem is discussed taking a 3-D truss structure as a design object. We use descriptor forms for a controlled object and a generalized plant because the structural parameters appear naturally in these forms. We consider not only minimum weight design problem for structure system, but also suppression problem of the effect of disturbances for control system as the purpose of the design. By minimizing the linear sum of the normalized structural objective function and control objective function, it is possible to make optimal design by which the balance of the structural weight and the control performance is taken.

Reliability-based design approaches are needed for cylindrical shell structure whose design and operational experiences are few and which are subjected to external loads of random loads. In designing new type of structure, it is very difficult to evaluate the safety factors due to lack of previous design data and operational experience. To solve the above mentioned problem, much attention is being focussed on rational reliability based design approaches. This paper deals with weight-optional reliability-based design of cylindrical shell structure subjected to structural reliability constraints taking into account of the effect of local buckling and interactive behavior between local and global buckling. Present mentioned is compared with the exiting optional design method based only on safety factors. Numerical simulation reveals that the present method leads to lighter structure (4% reduction in weight compared to the existing optimal design) with the same reliability index. For larger structures with more number of structural members and possible failure modes, the present W0RBD procedure will be an efficient tool in designing cost-effective rationalized economic design.

Naval ship design and related other activities can be characterized by the complexity of the interactions among products, activities, and disciplines. Such complexities often result in inferior designs, cost overrun, and late-delivery. Hence there exist tremendous interests in both improving the design process itself and optimizing the interactions among design activities. This paper looks at the complexity of designing naval ships thereby leading to the innovation of current ship design practices using design structure matrix. It can be used to induce the optimal ordering of design activities as well as identify sources of complexities. The method presented here identifies coupled design activities useful for reducing the complexity of naval ship design as well as optimally reordering design activities. This paper recommends the use of design structure matrix method suitable for numerically optimizing the concept design process of naval ship, and reducing cost and time required in designing naval ships by modeling and analyzing the design activities and engineering tasks, defined in systems engineering planning documents.

Fashion and architecture essentially have structure to build space for a form of three dimensions. This study defines the form in which structure in itself becomes design as structural simplicity and investigates design paying attention to only structure. It is one of efforts in order to display new design required in the age of a flood of design and it is considered that before developing design through the fusion of architecture and fashion, understanding structure which is the most fundamental element to constitute the form of the two genres will be a groundwork to develop proper fusion design. This study elucidates similarities between architecture and fashion through literature review and investigates structure meant in architecture and fashion, and after that, collects corresponding examples through related literature and fashion information site. For structural simplicity in architecture, structure of a building in itself is a form and decoration at the same time, and it appears as a form of minimizing other elements and stressing the structure only. Structure in fashion means composition line which essentially exists to embody two dimensional materials onto three dimensional human body. As elements of geometric lines are creatively expressed by a designer in order to constitute three dimensional form from structural simplicity, they connote a variety of functions and exert decorative effects as well. And the shape of structure expressed like this is employed as a tool to show off the designer's techniques.
