A multi-attribute robust design methodology is presented. This method can be applied where there are various technical constraints in design variables, multiple potentially conflicting design attributes, and uncontrollable noise variables. Two forms of technical constraints, soft and hard constraints, are considered in robust design settings. Specifically, this work presents procedures for integrating two types of design constraints seamlessly on the multiple design attributes, which is achieved through a development of multi-attribute utility formulation. The effectiveness of the overall procedures is tested with the aid of an I-Beam design problem, and results of sensitivity analysis are discussed.

This papter presents the use of the automatic differential method based on the backpropagation method to obtain the design sensitivity and its application to topology optimization considering the stress constraints. Solving topology optimization problems with stress constraints is difficult owing to singularities, the local nature of stress constraints, and nonlinearity with respect to design variables. To solve the singularity problem, the stress relaxation technique is used, and p-norm for stress constraints is applied instead of local stresses for global stress measures. To overcome the nonlinearity of the design variables in stress constraint problems, it is important to analytically obtain the exact design sensitivity. In conventional topology optimization, design sensitivity is obtained efficiently and accurately using the adjoint variable method; however, obtaining the design sensitivity analytically and additionally solving the adjoint equation is difficult. To address this problem, the design sensitivity is obtained using a backpropagation technique that is used to determine optimal weights and biases in the artificial neural network, and it is applied to the topology optimization with the stress constraints. The backpropagation technique is used in automatic differentiation and can simplify the calculation of the design sensitivity for the objectives or constraint functions without complicated analytical derivations. In addition, the backpropagation process is more computationally efficient than solving adjoint equations in sensitivity calculations.

Due to the difficulty in considering dynamic load in the view point of a computer resource and computing time, it is common that external load is assumed as ideal static loads. However, structural analysis under static load cannot guarantee the safety of design of the structures under dynamic loadings. Recently, the systematic method to construct equivalent static load from the given dynamic load has been proposed. Previous study has calculated equivalent static load through the optimization procedure under displacement constraints. However, previously reported works to distribute equivalent static load were based on ad-hoc methods. Improper selection of equivalent static loading positions may results in unreliable prediction of structural design. The present study proposes the selection method of the proper locations of equivalent static loads to dynamically applied loads when we consider transient dynamic structural problems. Moreover, it is appropriate to take into account the stress constraint as well as displacement constraint condition for the safety design. But the previously reported studies of equivalent static load design methods considered only displacement constraint conditions but not stress constraint conditions. In the present study we consider not only displacement constraint but also stress constraint conditions. Through a few numerical examples, the efficiency and reliability of proposed scheme is verified by comparison of the equivalent stress between equivalent static loading and dynamic loading.

A growing attention has been paid to the optimum design of structures in recent years. Most studies on the optimum design of reinforced concrete structures has been mainly focussed to the design of structural members such as beams, slabs and columns, and there exist few studies that deal with the optimum design of large-scale concrete shell structures. The purpose of the present investigation is, therefore, to set up an efficient optimum design method for the large-scale reinforced concrete cylindrical shell structures like intake tower of reservoir. The major design variables are the dimensions and steel areas of each member of structures. The construction cost which is compo8ed of the concrete, steel, and form work costs, respectively, is taken as the objective function. The constraint equations for the design of intake-tower are derived on the basis of strength design method. The results obtained are summarized as follows 1. The efficient optimlzation algorithrns which can execute the automatic optimum design of reinforced concrete intake tower based on the strength design method were developed. 2. Since the objective function and design variables were converged to their optimum values within the first or second iteration, the optimization algorithms developed in this study seem to be efficient and stable. 3. When using the strength design method, the construction cost could be saved about 9% compared with working stress design method. Therefore, the reliability of algorithm was proved. 4. The difference in construction cost between the optimum designs with substructures and with entire structure was found to be small and thus the optimum design with substructures may conveniently be used in practical design. 5. The major active constraints of each structural member were found to be the 'bending moment constraint for slab, the minimum longitudinal steel ratio constraint for tower body and the shearing force, bending moment and maximum eccentricity constraints for footing, respectively. 6. The computer program developed in the present study can be effectively used even by an uneiperienced designer for the optimum design of reinforced concrete intake-tower on the basis of strength design method.

Design of experiments is utilized for exploring the design space and for building response surface models in order to facilitate the effective solution of multi-objective optimization problems. Response surface models provide an efficient means to rapidly model the trade-off among many conflicting goals. In robust design, it is important not only to achieve robust design objectives but also to maintain the robustness of design feasibility under the effects of variations, called uncertainties. However, the evaluation of feasibility robustness often needs a computationally intensive process. To reduce the computational burden associated with the probabilistic feasibility evaluation, the first-order Taylor series expansions are used to derive individual mean and variance of constraints. For robust design applications, these constraint response surface models are used efficiently and effectively to calculate variances of constraints due to uncertainties. Robust optimization of automotive seat is used to illustrate the approach.
In this paper, a shape optimization algorithm of superconducting magnet using finite element method is presented. Since the superconductor loses its superconductivity over the critical magnetic field and critical current density, this material property should be taken into account in the design process. Trial and error approach of repeating the change of the design variables costs much time and it sometimes does not guarantee an optimal design. This paper presents a systematic and efficient design algorithm for the superconducting magnet. We employ the sensitivity analysis based on finite element formulation. As for optimization algorithm, the inequality constraint for the superconducting state is removed by modifying the objective function and the nonlinear equality constraint of constant volume is satisfied by the gradient projection method. This design algorithm is applied to an optimal design problem of a solenoid air-cored superconducting magnet that has a design objective of the maximum energy storage.

Structural optimization using improved higer-order convex approximation is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is a generalization of the convex approximation method. The order of the approximation function for each constraint is automatically adjusted in the optimization process. And also the order of each design variable is differently adjusted. This self-adjusted capability makes the approximate constraint values conservative enough to maintain the optimum design point of the approximate problem in feasible region. The efficiency of proposed algorithm, compared with conventional algorithm is successfully demonstrated in the Three-bar Truss example.

In the present paper, the effects of the thickness and width of a curved wide-plate, the crack length, and the strain hardening exponent on the crack-tip constraint of the curved wide-plate were investigated. To accomplish this, detailed three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element (FE) analyses were performed considering various geometric and material variables. The material was characterized by the Ramberg-Osgood relationship, and the Q-stress was employed as a crack-tip constraint parameter. Based on the present FE results, the variations in the Q-stress of the curved wide-plate with the geometric variables and material properties were evaluated. This revealed that the effect of out-of-plane constraint conditions on the crack-tip constraint was closely related to the in-plane constraint conditions, and out-of-plane constraint conditions affected the crack-tip constraint more than in-plane constraint conditions.

This paper considers a topological optimization of a computer network design with a cost constraint. The objective is to find the topological layout of links, at maximal reliability, under the constraint that the network cost is less or equal than a given level of budget. This problem is known to be NP-hard. To efficiently solve the problem, a genetic approach is proposed. Two illustrative examples are used to explain and test the proposed approach. Experimental results show evidence that the proposed approach performs more efficiently for finding a good solution or near optimal solution in comparison with a simulated annealing method.

In this study, the optimum design is carried out upon the crankshaft of in-line 6-cylinder internal combustion diesel engine with the mechanical analysis for the layout design, which is standard calculation whose process contains quadratic curve fitting method and quasi newton method about cost function, design variables and constraint conditions, Without finite element analysis, this process in wich mechanical analysis is performed upon the most critical part in crankshaft gives necessary and satisfied output in layout design and saves time and cost in developing a new diesel engine. In this study, also, the 3-dimensional finite element method is used in confirming the standard calculation for the optimization of crankshaft and the shape optimization in crankweb is obtained.
