  • The goal of this research is contemplation on whether postmodern design concepts such as parody, simulation, appropriation, pastiche apply to the character design in games, within bounds of postmodernism.   • Traditional architectural space, which is a historical cultural heritage must be connected mutually as a organic flow of various elements such as the environment of the time, political background and values, rather than approaching with fragmentary point of view. The Silhak Philosophy, the basis of late Chosun society developed equity thoughts on the basis of ideology of humanism, and it asserted the promotion of technology and industry as a measure to realize the pursuit of truth which is practically useful. Thus, we could verify the possibility of convergent interpretation of cultural technology of Hwaseong architectural space through the humanistic viewpoint of pioneer spirit of Silhak Philosophy which regards human as a main agent of desire of life, and the pursuit of truth which is useful for reality, and the realization of ethical value by aesthetic practicalism. Based on this, the ontological meaning and value of Suwon Hwaseong by the viewpoint of convergence of culture and technology have been drawn as the construction of planned new town by the practice of filial duty, the plan of city space based on rational values, the realization of a metropolis where self-sufficient economic activities are possible, the introduction of thorough construction management system, the introduction of advanced culture and its creative application, and the application of scientifical knowledges and cutting-edge technology.

The Spatial Characteristics and Light presented in the Works of Laurant Beaudouin (로랑 보두앵 건축의 공간 특성과 빛)

  • Purpose: This paper tried to understand the architectural philosophy of Laurant Beaudouin who is one of Neo Corbusian architects. They were in succession to Le Corbusier's principles of modern architecture, and developed his concept of modern architecture with their own creative architecture, and formed a big achievement in the contemporary architecture. As a representative Neo Corbusian architect, the design concepts and principles of Laurant Beaudouin were analyzed in relation of nature, light and space. Method: Three step study was conducted for the paper; Firstly, investigated significant his architectural characteristics as a neo corbusian architect in the point of view of plan libre, architectural promenade and light; Secondly, analyzed his architectural philosophy on light, gravity and color, Finally, deducted relation light and space through analysis 5 works of Beaudouin. Results: According to the results of the study, Laurant Beaudouin has greatly developed of Corbusier's principles and philosophy of modern architecture, and then, created his own originative architectural works by combining nature, light and space and presented architectural promenade with the change of time.

  • The Norwegian architect, Sverre Fehn who was born in 1924 and died in 2009 designed various buildings in his country. Since he studied architecture, he had been interested in the domestic/local architectural environment as well as international modern movement such as CIAM. Pavilion of the Nordic Nations designed in 1960s gave him world reputation for the peculiar design characteristic in which Scandinavian tradition and modern design were integrated. Fehn introduced his unique architectural philosophy that is called 'Platform Architecture'. This concept is based on the Fehn's long-term interest in the philosophy of Genius Loci and place-specificity. It consists of three theoretical elements: Tectonic of Place, Horizontality of Space and Visual-Perception by Light. This paper focuses on three case projects: Villa Busk in 1990, Norwegian Glacier Museum in 1991, Aukrust Museum in 1993. It is aimed to discover differences as well as similarities of the projects, and ultimately to summarize the cases under the light of 'Platform Architecture'. As a conclusion, it is found that each case project has unique spatializing method to organize the given place and program by 'Platform' architectural design. 'Platform Architecture' is still relevant in the contemporary architecture and interior design because of its deep consideration on place, environment and human.

  • This study focuses on an innate 'spiritual' quality of arts including building art, or a meaning of the religious philosophy of 'creativity-art'. In particular, this focuses, among two aspects in roots of modernism, especially on the irrational facet veiled by the name of 'a new' religious faith, rather than the rational such as the function. In fact, although modern Avant-gardes' religious philosophical faiths called by different names respectively have generally considered as one of the sources for their designs, nevertheless it had veiled because of the religious 'orthodoxy power' at that time. Arguably, as known well, the creativity of art is intimate relation with a religious ideas. Thus, for this purpose, this study treats this theme in central these three issues; Orientalism, Universalism, and Froebelianism which are intimate in the realm of religious philosophy. Ultimately, through a research on the universal religious philosophy in all three objects as keeping a quality not of pantheism but of 'Panentheism' emphasizing the individual's 'divine' artistic volition, this study deepens the understanding on the Creativity-art as the main characteristic of modernity. Namely, it is very important to draw a distinction between pantheism and Panentheism; because, through the pantheism, it is difficult to comprehend a stream and a characteristic of the twentieth new religious thoughts including those of modern avant-garde artists, as well as their existential free-will as a whole.

  • Diverse and complicated trends of fashion design which were initiated at the latter part of the 20th century have been evolving in the cultural framework of Postmodernism. At this point of time, Poststructuralism, with its aims to interpret and understand modern fashion design, is a new system of thinking that reveals the contradictory aspects of rationalistic Western philosophy and accepts uncertainty and disorder as they exist. The main purpose of this study is to examine the various theoretic systems and characteristic concepts of Poststructuralism, and supply a new cognizance frame to understand the processes of fashion design with free and varied notions of deconstruction and generation, in place of the former systematic and consistent interpretation of meaning. Concerning fashion design, analysis of theories and analysis of contents. By probing and examining deconstruction theory, 'I'-other theory, textual theory, and nomadic thinking, the concepts of cognizance are classified into Nonboundariness, Otherness, and Textualism. The theoretic foundation for this analysis and classification is supplied by Derrida's deconstructional philosophy, Lacan's mental analysis, Bartes's textual theory, Deleuze's change and generation theory, together with other theories of Poststructuralism. In analysis of theories, a cognizance frame is proposed that can categorize the concepts, derived from various theories of Poststructuralism, as traits expressed in fashion design.

  • Ship owners had pursued higher benefits by demanding the new design and construction of ships with higher operational efficiency. There was a necessity for shipyards to suggest a more economical design and advanced operation concept in order to meet the demands. Especially, since BOG combustion and activation of the re-liquefaction unit had to be taken into account in ship design in addition to fuel oil and gas consumption, the evaluation of the operating efficiency considering the technological trends was necessary. In this paper, it was aimed to study the design philosophy and operation strategy by considering the effect of fuel oil and gas consumption, BOG combustion, and activation of the re-liquefaction unit on the operating cost for laden voyage according to ship speed, BOR, and activation of the re-liquefaction unit. For this purpose, the costs were acquired by conducting the sailing simulation of an LNGC based on a mathematical model including the maneuvering equations of motion. The design philosophy and operation strategy was reviewed in terms of the operating cost.

A Study on the Expression of Bergsonian Duration in Steven Holl's Stretto House (스티븐 홀의 스트레토 하우스에서 베르그송의 지속의 표현에 관한 연구)

  • This study aimed to show the possibility of approaching Steven Holl's Stretto House as a vital space identical to the flow of our consciousness through Bergson's philosophy of life by understanding the expression of Bergsonian duration in the house. For the Purpose of this study, Bergson's concept of aesthetic duration was considered and duration in the Stretto House design process was analyzed, Based on the study's findings, duration according to Bergson's expression of reality in the Stretto House was further analyzed. The results of the analysis of duration in the Stretto House design process showed that duration is expressed as phenomenological time through the continuity and movement of the perceptual phenomena of space, sound, light and material that reflected Merleau-Ponty's anchoring and Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. The results of the analysis of duration as an expression of reality in the Stretto House showed that duration is expressed as real time, as reality's continuous and diverse movement of vital duration, through the image and rhythm based on the intuitive recollection of the real self, sound, light and pond. Consequently, it was shown that the Stretto House could be understood as a vital space in which a vital movement of duration identical with the flow of our consciousness is expressed through the expression of reality in Bergson's philosophy of life. This study is meaningful as a foundational study of the experiential space of phenomena through Bergson's philosophy of life.

  • Earthquake Resistant Design Philosophy seeks (a) no damage, (b) no significant structural damage, and (c) significant structural damage but no collapse of normal buildings, under minor, moderate and severe levels of earthquake shaking, respectively. A procedure is proposed for seismic design of low-rise reinforced concrete special moment frame buildings, which is consistent with this philosophy; buildings are designed to be ductile through appropriate sizing and reinforcement detailing, such that they resist severe level of earthquake shaking without collapse. Nonlinear analyses of study buildings are used to determine quantitatively (a) ranges of design parameters required to assure the required deformability in normal buildings to resist the severe level of earthquake shaking, (b) four specific limit states that represent the start of different structural damage states, and (c) levels of minor and moderate earthquake shakings stated in the philosophy along with an extreme level of earthquake shaking associated with the structural damage state of no collapse. The four limits of structural damage states and the three levels of earthquake shaking identified are shown to be consistent with the performance-based design guidelines available in literature. Finally, nonlinear analyses results are used to confirm the efficacy of the proposed procedure.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the philosophy behind the Kasaya and its evolution through its clothing material colour structure and sewing. According to the study the results were as follows. 1. The philosophy behind the dressing of the Kasaya can be found in the Therefore wearing the Kasaya symbolizes the Buddhist philosophy of Jat'ailshisongbul ("Simultaneous attaining of Buddhahood for Everyone") 2. The material symbolizes endurance and contentiment by being satisfied with any kind of clothes may they be good or bad. The material of the kasaya comes to signify the harmony among the monk's community 3. The Kasaya uses peculiar colours and the prohibits the use of the five primary and seconary colous. This is to symbolize equality wherein there is no distinction between the noble and the mean. 4. The structure of the Kasaya according the takes the form of a field The Jo is cut lengthwise and divided in nine grades following the Mahayana tradition as written in the This idea reflects the philosophy of salvation of the Pure land thought. The Je has many Jang('long') and fex Dan('short') The meaning of this is that all living beings by self-cultivation can overcome the dirty law of the secular world and follow the way of the sage who have attained their Buddha nature. 5. With respect to the sewing after finishin the sewing the Jang and the Dan are combined together representing the interdependence between the holy person and the common person. Therefore the sewing ssymbolizes the interconnection among all living beings as it arise from the "conditional causation" law. Therefore from the sanghati the Nine Grade the evolution and changes in the designs of the kasaya through the different periods of history became clearly an expression how it is possible for anybody to attend the Buddha nature.
