Clinching is a method of joining sheet metals together. This process can be substituted for the resistance spot welding on the joining of aluminum alloys. However, the joining strength of the clinching is lower than that of welding and riveting. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effect of shape parameters of tools on the joining strength of the clinching and to optimize clinching tools. Twelve parameters have been selected as shape parameters on the clinching tools such as punch and die. The design of experiments (DOE) method is employed to investigate the effect of the shape parameters of tools on the joining strength of the clinching. The neck thickness and undercut of the clinched sheet metal after the clinching, and the separation load at detaching are estimated from the result of FEA using DEFORM. Optimal combination of shape parameters to maximize the joining strength of clinching is determined on the basis of the result of DOE and FEA. In order to validate the result of DOE and FEA, the experiment of clinching is performed for the optimal combination of shape parameters. It is shown from the result of the experiment that optimization of shape parameters improves the joining strength of clinching.
These days manufacture technology and manufacture environment are changing rapidly. By development of computer and enlargement of technique, most of manufacture field are computerized. In order to win international competition, it is important for companies how fast get the useful information from vast data. Statistical process control(SPC) techniques have been used as a problem solution tool at manufacturing process until present. However, these statistical methods are not applied more extensively because it has much restrictions in realistic problems. These statistical techniques have lots of problems when much data and factors are analyzed. In this paper, we proposed more practical and efficient a new statistical design technique which integrated data mining (DM) and statistical methods as alternative of problems. First step is selecting significant factor using DM feature selection algorithm from data of manufacturing process including many factors. Second step is finding optimum of process after estimating response function through response surface methodology(RSM) that is a statistical techniques

With the rapid development of spatial infrastructure in US, Europe, Japan, China and India, there is no doubt that the next generation Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) will improve the integrity, accuracy, reliability and availability of the position solution. GNSS is becoming an essential element of personal, commercial and public infrastructure and consequently part of our daily lives. However, the applicability of GPS in supporting a range of location-sensitive applications such as location based services in an urban environment is severely curtailed by the interference of the 3D urban settings. To characterize and gain in-depth understanding of such interferences and to be able to provide location-based optimization alternatives, a high-fidelity 3D urban model of Melbourne CBD built with ArcGIS and large scale high-resolution spatial data sets is used in this study to support a comprehensive simulation of current and future GNSS signal performance, in terms of signal continuity, availability, strength, geometry, positioning accuracy and reliability based on a number of scenarios. The design, structure and major components of the simulator are outlined. Useful time-stamped spatial patterns of the signal performance over the experimental urban area have been revealed which are valuable for supporting location based services applications, such as emergency responses, the optimization of wireless communication infrastructures and vehicle navigation services.

Aerodynamic analysis of an airfoil in the transonic region was automated in order to enable parametric study by using the journal file of the commercial analysis code FLUENT, pre/post process Gambit and computational mathematics code MATLAB. The automated capability was illustrated via NACA 0012 and RAE 2822 airfoils. This analysis was carried out at Mach numbers ranged from 0.70 to 0.80, angles of attack; 1$^{\circ}$, 2$^{\circ}$ and 4$^{\circ}$, Reynolds numbers; 4.0${\times}$106, 6.5${\times}$106. The analysis results of a pressure coefficient were verified by comparing with the experimental data which were measured in terms of chord length because the pressure coefficient of an airfoil surface is a good estimator of flow characteristics. The results of two airfoils show that this analysis code is useful enough to be used in the design optimization of airfoil.

In this study, the load fluctuation of the main engine is considered to be a disturbance for the jacket coolant temperature control system of the low-speed two-stroke main diesel engine on the ships. A nonlinear PID temperature control system with satisfactory disturbance rejection performance was designed by rapidly transmitting the load change value to the controller for following the reference set value. The feed-forwarded load fluctuation is considered the set points of the dual loop control system to be changed. Real-coded genetic algorithms were used as an optimization tool to tune the gains for the nonlinear PID controller. ITAE was used as an evaluation function for optimization. For the evaluation function, the engine jacket coolant outlet temperature was considered. As a result of simulating the proposed cascade nonlinear PID control system, it was confirmed that the disturbance caused by the load fluctuation was eliminated with satisfactory performance and that the changed set value was followed.
The flat coil actuator is widely used to make high precision products because it has no friction between the moving coil and the guide. Finite Element Method, a favored actuator design tool due to its high accuracy, was utilized to analyze the electromagnetic actuator, but it consumes a lot of time especially in computation iterations for optimization. Accordingly, the magnetic equivalent circuit analysis can be an alternative tool to FEM because of its computation iteration capability with fair accuracy. In this paper, lumped parameter model and the simulation results are presented. In addition, the result of lumped parameter analysis is compared with those obtained from finite element analysis for verification.

This paper presents the characteristics of cutting fluid atomization due to its application method. In this study three different application methods; nozzle, jet, mist type is adopted for evaluating the cutting fluid's effect in terms of machinability and environmental consciousness. Cutting fluids are widely used to cool and lubricate the cutting zone in machining process. Cutting fluids mist via atomization in spin-off process can be affected to health risk. To satisfy the increasing concern of health and environment problem and keep the machinability or productivity it is necessary to establish the resonable strategy of cutting fluid usage and optimal control. Tool wear and cutting fluid diffusion rate in the air were measured as machinability index and environmental index in a few turing operation. Through this basic approach it can be also provide the optimization of cutting process and improvement of machine tool design in achieving environmentally conscious machining.

Pumped storage power plants are playing a significant role in the contribution to the stabilization of an electrical grid, above all by stable operation and fast reaction to sudden load respectively frequency changes. Optimized efficiency and smooth running characteristics both in pump and turbine operation, improved stability for synchronization in turbine mode, load control in pump mode operation and also short reaction times may be achieved using adjustable speed power units. Such variable speed power plants are applicable for high variations of head (e.g. important for low head pump-turbine projects). Due to the rapid development of power semiconductors and frequency converter technology, feasible solutions can be provided even for large hydro power units. Suitable control strategies as well as clear design criteria contribute significantly to the optimal usage of the pump turbine and motor-generators. The SIMSEN tool for dynamic simulations has been used for comparative investigations of different configurations regarding the power converter topology, types of semiconductors and types of motor-generators including the coupling to the hydraulic system. A brief overview of the advantages & disadvantages of the different solutions can also be found in this paper. Using this approach, a customized solution minimizing cost and exploiting the maximum usage of the pump-turbine unit can be developed in the planning stage of new and modernization pump storage projects.
Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) is one of most effective methods of robust controller design and can be considered as a suitable method for systems with parametric uncertainties. Particularly it allows us to obtain controllers less conservative than other methods like $H_{\infty}$ and ${\mu}$-synthesis. In QFT method, we transform all the uncertainties and desired specifications to some boundaries in Nichols chart and then we have to find the nominal loop transfer function such that satisfies the boundaries and has the minimum high frequency gain. The major drawback of the QFT method is that there is no effective and useful method for finding this nominal loop transfer function. The usual approach to this problem involves loop-shaping in the Nichols chart by manipulating the poles and zeros of the nominal loop transfer function. This process now aided by recently developed computer aided design tools proceeds by trial and error and its success often depends heavily on the experience of the loop-shaper. Thus for the novice and First time QFT user, there is a genuine need for an automatic loop-shaping tool to generate a first-cut solution. In this paper, we approach the automatic QFT loop-shaping problem by using an algorithm involving Linear Programming (LP) techniques and Genetic Algorithm (GA).

A method for shape design sensitivity analysis is proposed utilizing commercial software ANSYS for thermal conduction problems. While the sensitivity formula is derived analytically by introduing adjoint variable concept, sensitivity calculation in practice as well as the primal and adjoint solution of thermal conduction is performed using the ANSYS very easily. Since the formula always takes boundary integral form, sensitivity evaluation in ANSYS requires a little more addition of post-processing routine which involves evaluation of boundary variable from the obtained solution. Though the BEM has been used as a better tool for this purpose, the present study shows it can also be calculated using any kind of analysis code such as ANSYS since the formula is based on analytic nature. Therefore the present study provides a new and efficient way of optimization which was not possible before using commercial software. The usefulness of the method is illustrated via a weight minimization problem of thermal diffuser.
