  • In recent years, living space of modern society have vared, and new methods to build have been introduced using new building materials and interior finishing materials as the life level is enhanced. But these kinds of materials release some harmful substances to people. The most of people living in new apartment have headache and dizziness, and feel sick of the stomach, sleepiness, eye stimulus, concentration decrease and allergies. That called 'sick house syndrome'is becoming new society problem. The purpose of this study is to investigate the kinds and various problems of the interior finishing materials and to pursue improvement of living place and pleasant interior surroundings.

  • An integrated R&D program is being conducted to study, qualify, and in some cases, develop materials with required properties for the reactor systems being developed as part the U.S. Department of Energy's Generation IV Reactor Program. The goal of the program is to ensure that the materials research and development (R&D) needed to support Gen IV applications will comprise a comprehensive and integrated effort to identify and provide the materials data and its interpretation needed for the design and construction of the selected advanced reactor concepts. The major materials issues for the five primary systems that have been considered within the U.S. Gen IV Reactor Program-very high temperature gas-cooled, supercritical water-cooled, gas-cooled fast spectrum, lead-cooled fast spectrum, and sodium-cooled fast spectrum reactors-are described along with the R&D that has been identified to address them.

  • The thermal runaway phenomenon in lithium-ion batteries hinders their large-scale application and leads to safety issues, including smoke, fire, and explosion. Therefore, early warning systems must be employed rapidly and reliably to ensure user safety, with methods for detecting gases such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons-all indicators of the thermal runaway process-considered a promising approach. In particular, metal-oxide-semiconductor-based gas sensors can be used to monitor target gases owing to their high response, fast response, and facile integration. In this paper, we review various strategies for enhancing the performance of metal-oxide-semiconductor-based gas sensors, including nanostructure design, catalyst loading, and composite design. Future perspectives on employing metal-oxide-semiconductor-based gas sensors to monitor thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries are also discussed.

  • For design of On/Off type solenoid actuator, designer must have the experimental knowledge as well as general electromagnetic formulas to design object. It is possible for theoretical knowledge to do the out-line design, but it is impossible to optimal design without experimental knowledge which only can achieve through many repeated experiments. In addition, in present On/Off type solenoid actuator field, smaller, lightening, lower consumption power, high response time are effected as the most important design factor. So, experimental knowledge is more needed for optimal design of solenoid actuator. In this study, we developed a design program composed electromagnetic theories and experimental parameter values for inexperienced designers. And we proved the propriety of this program by experiments.

  • This study attempts to analyze the characteristics of interior design of the apartments in Busan that people will reside since 2001 and to find out the effects of minimalism in the interior space. The companies which are in construction of the apartments of more than 50 Pyung were selected, and the design of the living rooms of their model houses were analyzed in terms of the floor plans, architectural elements, furniture and lightings. The results reveals that the living rooms of the newly-distributed apartments in Busan show similar design characteristics without distinctive differences among the companies. The new trends provide a flexible wall which makes it possible to manipulate the number of rooms according to the family preference, art-wall design in one-side of the walls and a coffered ceiling design, which can be interpreted to be closely related to the concept of minimalism with expression of simple horizontal and vertical lines, exclusive use of decorative forms, colors and materials, and use of natural materials

  • Upcycling is a sustainable way to recycle waste resources and solve the global problem of environmental pollution. Upcycling is now attracting attention as fiberization and the disposal of waste clothing have become a serious issue. However, the customer's willingness to purchase upcycled products should be increased by propagating that the product value of a reborn commodity is of high value; these products are meant for new purposes and prepared with recycled materials. In this study, we created 11 designer items by applying an eco-friendly concept in the design process of upcycled textiles and products. From 2020 to 2021, a PBL(Problem Based Learning) curriculum was taught in design planning classes. The final 11 design items were derived after developing an eco-friendly product design for upcycled textiles. These final items were as follows: 5 fashion bags, 3 dog products, 1 clothing, 1 fashion accessory, and 1 sanitary mask design. In order to develop only one aesthetic design idea for upcycling, we considered the following features: user-centered convenience, functionality, and practicality. Then, tie-dye, drawing, patchwork, and embroidery were used to create innovative design items. The product design of recycled materials is based on high functionality, waterproofing, and the use of organic natural materials. The results of this study indicate that the creative product design of upcycling has contributed to a sustainable and eco-friendly environment. Related research studies must be conducted for innovating the continuous design process of the future.

  • This presentation will focus on computational materials research carried out across length scales. Examples will be presented that illustrate the way in which state-of-the-art quantum mechanical calculations and atomistic simulations can be applied to explain experimental data, design new structures, determine mechanisms, and enable new investigations. In particular, the presentation will present key findings from an integrated experimental and computational investigation of the tribological properties of polytetrafluoroethylene and its composites and predictions regarding the mechanical and tribological properties of inorganic nanostructured materials.
