  • Multiple studies conducted in the past evaluated the conductor response under one tornado wind field, while the performance of transmission lines under different tornado wind fields still remains unknown. Thus, the objective of this paper is to estimate the variation in the conductor's critical longitudinal and transverse reactions under different tornado wind fields, as well as providing the corresponding critical tornado configurations. The considered full-scale tornadoes are the Spencer, South Dakota, 1998, the Stockton, Kansas, 2005 and the Goshen County, Wyoming, 2009. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were previously conducted to develop these wind fields. All tornadoes have been rescaled to have a common velocity matching the upper limit of the F2 Fujita scale. Eight conductor systems, each including six spans, are considered in this paper. For each conductor, parametric studies are conducted by varying the location of the three tornado wind fields relative to the tower of interest, therefore the peak reactions associated with each tornado are determined. A semi-analytical closed-form solution, previously developed and validated, is used to calculate the reactions. The study conducted in this paper can be divided into two parts: In the first part, a parametric study considering a wide range of tornado locations is conducted. In the second part, the parametric study focuses on the tornado location leading to the critical tangential velocity on the tower. Based on this extensive parametric study, a critical tornado defined as the Design Tornado and its critical locations, tornado distance R = 125 m, tornado angle 𝜃 = 15° and 30°, are recommended for design purposes.

  • Because most spent nuclear fuel storage casks have been designed for low burnup fuel, a safety-significant high burnup dry storage cask must be developed for nuclear facilities in Korea to store the increasing high burnup and damaged fuels. More than 20% of fuels generated by PWRs comprise high burnup fuels. This study conducted a structural safety evaluation of the preliminary designs for a high burnup storage cask with 21 spent nuclear fuels and evaluated feasible loading conditions under normal, off-normal, and accident conditions. Two types of metal and concrete storage casks were used in the evaluation. Structural integrity was assessed by comparing load combinations and stress intensity limits under each condition. Evaluation results showed that the storage cask had secured structural integrity as it satisfied the stress intensity limit under normal, off-normal, and accident conditions. These results can be used as baseline data for the detailed design of high burnup storage casks.

  • Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) is one of the limit state design methods, and has been used worldwide, especially in North America. Also, the study for LRFD has been actively conducted in Korea. However, the data for LRFD in Korea were not sufficient, so resistance factors suggested by AASTTO have been used for the design in Korea. But the resistance factors suggested by AASHTO represent the characteristics of bedrocks defined in the US, therefore, it is necessary to determine the resistance factors for designs in Korea, which can reflect the characteristics of bedrocks in Korea. Also, the calculated probabilities of failure from conventional reliability analyses which commonly use log-normal distribution are not realistic because of the lower tail that can be extended to zero. Therefore, it is necessary to calibrate the resistance factors considering the lower-bound resistance. Thus, this study calculates the resistance factors using thirteen sets of drilled shaft load test results, and then calibrates the resistance factors considering the lower-bound resistance corresponding to a target reliability index of 3.0. As a result, resistance factors from conventional reliability analyses were determined in the range of 0.13-0.32 for the shaft resistance, and 0.19-0.29 for the base resistance, respectively. Also, the lower bounds of resistance were determined based on the Hoek-Brown failure criteria (2002) and GSI downgrading. Considering the lower-bound resistances, resistance factors increased by 0~8% for the shaft, and 0~13% for the base, respectively.

  • As RFID technology has been developed rapidly, its technical potential has it be widely used in many industrial fields. Particularly, in the physical distribution industry, the introduction of RFID has enormously contributed to effectively monitoring locations and information of products in real-time. Also, a significant decline in tag prices and RFID related technical competitiveness enabled each tag to be managed much more minutely by attaching it to an item, not a pallet nor a container. However, if a very large volume of tag data are continuously flowed into a RFID middleware with limited hardware resources, its entire data processing time may become considerably longer. Therefore, specific technologies are in great demand to handle and further to reduce the load of the middleware. In this paper, we proposed a mobile agent-based software module to efficiently reduce the load of the middleware by pre-processing a lot of tag data while items are in transit. Simulation results show that using the proposed software module considerably enhances the speed of processing tag data than otherwise. This behavior increases the tag recognition rate in a certain time limit and improves reliability of RFID middlewares.

  • In comparison with ordinary or heavy-weight concrete, light-weight air void concrete has the good aspects in optimizing super tall structure systems for the process of design considering wind load and seismic load by lightening total dead load of buildings and reducing natural resources used. Light-weight air void concrete has excellent properties of heat and sound insulating due to its high amount porosity of air voids. So, it has been used as partition walls and the floor of Ondol which is the traditional Korean floor heating system. Under the condition of which the supply of light-weight aggregates are limited, the development of light-weight concrete using air voids is highly required in the aspects of reduced manufacturing prices and mass production. In this study, we investigated the physical properties and thermal behaviors of specimens that applied different mixing ratios of foaming agent to evaluate the possibility of use in the structural elements. We proposed the estimating equation for compressive strength of each mix having different ratio of foaming agent. We also confirmed that the density of cement matrix is decreased as the mixing amount of foaming agent increase up to 0.6% of foaming agent mixing ratio which was observed by SEM. Based on porosity and compressive strength of control mortar without foaming agent, we built the estimating equations of compressive strength for mortars with foaming agent. The upper limit of use in foaming agent is about 0.6% of the binder amount. Each air void is independent, and size of voids range from 50 to $100{\mu}m$.

  • A demand for the aggregates is increasing in the field of civil and architectural industry and so on. In these industries, the particle size and shape of aggregates are important factors and especially spherical or rounded particles are desired. In Japan, waste glass is used as one of the aggregate materials for the pavement or the construction. In this study based on the frictional action of material on each other, an autogenous grinding of silica glass with a stirred mill were carried out in order to eliminate flakelike or squarish particles and get spherical or rounded ones for aggregate materials. The autogenous grinding experiments were conducted by applying loads to the particle layer of silica glass. The particle shape was evaluated by the shape index, N/T and the degree of circularity, Ψ$_{ci}$ . The unfractured particles (20~13mm) were evaluated by N/T and Ψ$_{ci}$ , and the products (finer than 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) by Ψ$_{ci}$ . As a result, N/T of the unfractured particles decreased with an increase of grinding time. Ψ$_{ci}$ of the unfractured particles and the products increased with an increase of grinding time (; progress of grinding), and became almost constant in the long time grinding. These tendencies were not changed by the applied load on the particle layer, but the limit value of Ψ$_{ci}$ at the products were varied with the applied load.plied load.

  • The plate bucking is very important design criteria when the ship is composed of high tensile steel plates. The structures under the action of excessive exhibit local failure associated with bucking until they reach the ultimate limit state as a whole. Precise assessment of the behaviour of plate above primary buckling load is important. In this connection, series of elastic plastic large deflection analyses are performed on rectangular plates with aspect ratio 1.4 applying the finite element method. In this paper, the buckling/plastic collapse behavior of ship plates with secondary buckling is investigated. It has found that the other deflection componentes also increase with the increase of compressive load above the primary buckling load.

  • In this study, based on P-3CK project using aging aircraft without any design information, the structural assessments of fastener holes to repair the short edge distance defects are investigated. For this purpose, the nacelle longeron which has many defects is selected and then conservative stress is calculated by performing the static analysis of 1.5ED, 1.8ED, 2.0ED defects of longeron fastener holes. This result applies to TWIST standard load spectrum to generate flight load spectrum. Then the crack growth analysis is performed by using flight load spectrum. Through this, the validity of a repaired fastener hole is evaluated. Finally, the standard of repair and the period of maintenance for a defected fastener hole are established.

  • To study the eccentric compressive performance of the basalt-fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (BFRRAC)-filled circular steel tubular stub column, 8 specimens with different replacement ratios of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), basalt fiber (BF) dosage, strength grade of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and eccentricity were tested under eccentric static loading. The failure mode of the specimens was observed, and the relationship curves during the entire loading process were obtained. Further, the load-lateral displacement curve was simulated and verified. The influence of the different parameters on the peak bearing capacity of the specimens was analyzed, and the finite element analysis model was established under eccentric compression. Further, the design-calculation method of the eccentric bearing capacity for the specimens was suggested. It was observed that the strength failure is the ultimate point during the eccentric compression of the BFRRAC-filled circular steel tubular stub column. The shape of the load-lateral deflection curves of all specimens was similar. After the peak load was reached, the lateral deflection in the column was rapidly increased. The peak bearing capacity decreased on enhancing the replacement ratio or eccentric distance, while the core RAC strength exhibited the opposite behavior. The ultimate bearing capacity of the BFRRAC-filled circular steel tubular stub column under eccentric compression calculated based on the limit analysis theory was in good agreement with the experimental values. Further, the finite element model of the eccentric compression of the BFRRAC-filled circular steel tubular stub column could effectively analyze the eccentric mechanical properties.

  • In this study, a new design method of Pile-Bent structure considering plastic hinge was proposed on the basis of the beam-column model. To obtain the detailed informations, the optimized cross-section ratio between column and pile was analyzed to induce the plastic hinge at the joint section between the pile and column. Base on this study, the optimized diameter ratio of pile and column can be obtained below the inflection point of the bi-linear curve depending on the relations between column-pile diameter ratio ($D_c/D_p$) and normalized lateral cracking load ratio ($F/F_{Dc=Dp}$). Moreover, through comparisons with field cases to find out in-depth limit in which minimum concrete-steel ratio could be applied, in-depth limits ($L_{As=0.4%}$) normalized by the pile length ($L_p$) proportionally decrease as the pile length ($L_p/D_p$)increases up to $L_p/D_p=17.5$, and beyond that in-depth limit converges to a constant value (${\simeq}0.3$).
