  • The purpose of this study is to arrange the terminology of the drawings in Chosun Dynasty, and to investigate the characteristics of drawings after the middle of Chos n Dynasty. This study is based on the and analysis of historic documents and drawings including drawings from China and Japan. In order to accomplish this, the drawings for the process of design were studied first, and the techniques of drawing were studied next in comparison with Japanese drawing techniques. Lastly, the technicians of drawing were studied. The results of this study were as follows; 1) Though the procedures of design Choson dynasty were not divided into planning, designing, construction and maintenance just like those of modern society, a variety of drawings in that time were used in each level. 2) The drawings in Choson Dynasty ere divided into Tohyong and Tosol, and mostly, those for design and construction were Tohy ng. 3) Based on the interpretation of Japanese drawings, several suggestions were presented to solve the questions of the drawing techniques for design and construction. 4) The technicians of drawing were the painters who were trained in a government organization in charge of royal paintings. In the future, research of this area should be continued in to deepen study on drawings as historical materials. This research provides meaningful of guidance in the analysis of historic drawing paintings.

  • As part of effort to reduce the process time from design to manufacture and delivery, the concept of CE(concurrent engineering) has been applied to design process. In this research, the drawing information management system (DIMS) was developed based on CE. The system can distribute electronic documents of drawing or work instruction parallel to all reviewers simultaneously and collect their annotations through network. Mark-up functions are used for annotations on the electronic documents. DIMS is a system which integrates drawing management, engineering BOM, CAD and raster drawings, etc. In this system, a SUN workstation is interfaced with PCs by LAN. CIMCAD-2D, Image Hunter, and ORACLE RDBMS are used for CAD drawings, raster drawings, and drawing information management, respectively. As an integration tool for all the information, LINKAGE is adopted.

  • As most landscape drawings tend to be recorded in electronic format, the need for layer standards is growing. While the categorization system of planting drawings has been progressing, landscape facility drawings are being delayed. So, the purpose of this study was to establish the categorization system of computerized landscape facility drawing documents. In the beginning of this study, it found that the layer categorization system of "The Standards of Construction CALS/EC computerized drawings v1. 1" and "The submit instructions of electronic design documents" are not suitable for the landscape facility drawings. 1,154 drawings drawn by 10 landscape architect offices were used to analyze the current layer categorization status. As a result, it found that "The Standards of Construction CALS/EC computerized drawings v1. 1" were not introduced in landscape facility drawings and 46% of layers were produced indefinitely. The new layer categorization system consisting of 15 facility items was drawn by applying the ISO construction information categorization system. The new layer categorization system is set on the basis of the legal code, landscape design standards, and design guidelines of public institutions. This new layer categorization system is expected to propagate at the landscape architect offices in the early.

  • Recently, security incidents are growing rapidly in which internal employees let the drawing leak out to competitors or other countries. This type of security incidents has a characteristic that it occurs less frequently than other types of security incidents such as network or server security incident, but the damage is a lot more serious. The existing information security technologies to prevent internal information from being leaked out are only applicable to general documents(office documents, web pages and image files in which data are encrypted one by one). However, architectural drawings made up of collection of files with various formats(extensions) have problems with the process speed of en(de) cryption and accuracy, so the developments of security technologies by new methods are required. In this study, we design and develop a security technology based on work area with which users can protect the leakage of critical information in the kernel level while maintaining their work environment when they have to use sharing information that cannot be managed by the unit of file. As a result, we developed the "Virtual Secure Disk" which allows only authorized users and applications to have an access to drawings, and have verified its security by applying it to the actual company.

  • Faced with increasing competitive pressures to reduce time-to-market, many business organizations have recognized that shortening the design cycle by taking full advantage of their intellectual property is inevitable in maintaining their market share. This paper describes a knowledge management system for machine tool design. Product structuring, change management, and complex design knowledge management are possible through the developed system. The system can speed up the design process by making necessary data instantly available as it is needed and keeping track of all the relevant design information and knowledge including individual decisions, design intentions, documents, and drawings.

  • A Web-based design automation system for concrete slab bridge has been developed to manage the resultant documents as well as to speed up the repetitive design process. Manipulation of engineering drawings in the Web page is one of the critical functions needed for Web-based design automation. Active Server Pages (ASP) is used to that collects design parameters in the database, and eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and XML-based vector graphics are expected to facilitate the representation of engineering drawings in the Web page. In this paper, we present how we used XML and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) to compose engineering drawings and represent them in the Web page. XML Data Island we designed to define drawing components turned out effective in manipulating the engineering drawings in the Web page.

  • In general, weapon system design/configuration data consist of system structure information which is linked to Part information, documents and drawings. For configuration management, version and revision control are necessary and access control of users to information should be managed for information security. Configuration data of weapon systems have various kinds of different meta data which are contained in the structure as well as attributes of parts and documents information. If neutral types of meta data models be used for building configuration management system, they can be applied to many different kinds of weapon systems with a little customization. In this paper, five meta data models are supposed and implementation results of them by using CBD(component based design) methodology are presented.

  • Operation and Maintenance (O&M) phase is the main contributor to the total lifecycle cost of a building. Previous studies have described that Building Information Models (BIM), if available with detailed asset information and their properties, can enable rapid troubleshooting and execution of O&M tasks by providing the required information of the facility. Despite the potential benefits, there is still rarely BIM with Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) assets and properties that are available for O&M. BIM is usually not in possession for existing buildings and generating BIM manually is a time-consuming process. Hence, there is a need for an automated approach that can reconstruct the MEP systems in BIM. Previous studies investigated automatic reconstruction of BIM using architectural drawings, structural drawings, or the combination with photos. But most of the previous studies are limited to reconstruct the architectural and structural components. Note that mechanical components in the building typically require more frequent maintenance than architectural or structural components. However, the building mechanical drawings are relatively more complex due to various type of symbols that are used to represent the mechanical systems. In order to address this challenge, this paper proposed a symbol recognition framework that can automatically recognize the different type of symbols in the building mechanical drawings. This study applied vector-based computer vision techniques to recognize the symbols and their properties (e.g., location, type, etc.) in two vector-based input documents: 2D drawings and the symbol description document. The framework not only enables recognizing and locating the mechanical component of interest for BIM reconstruction purpose but opens the possibility of merging the updated information into the current BIM in the future reducing the time of repeated manual creation of BIM after every renovation project.

  • It is very important to estimate accurate construction total cost needed early in the project. In the initial phase of the design, the project cost estimates are determined by total quantity from design documents and the variables that affect the calculation of the total cost of the project. In order to determine accurate total construction cost, the contractor has to produce detailed quantity information based on the drawings and specifications. The process of preparing quantification and cost estimation documents is still being worked out manually, and a lot of errors have been occurred in many cases. Recent advances in information technology have led to the BIM based quantity takeoff and cost estimation. However, there are some limits to the extent to which the current specifications for BoQ documents are computed from BIM model. This research analyze the current BoQ cases and analyze how to make quantity takeoff possible through BIM. The study defined five levels of quantity category that could be produced by BIM. Only about 40% or indirectly usable items can be used when information is extracted to BIM modelling. This is very insufficient to fill out the BoQ. The BoQ document structure quantity takeoff specifications should be simplified in order to BIM based cost estimation more efficiently.
